Joseph Simpson English artist and cartoonist. Signed proofs of six prints caricaturing George Bernard Shaw; Maxim Gorky; Hall Caine; Thomas Hardy; Algernon Charles Swinburne and J. Pierpont Morgan' 'London Opinion' and 'Lions'.
First published in the weekly magazine 'London Opinion'. Reprinted in the book 'Lions' published in New York and San Francisco by Morgan Shepard Co. 1906. Simpson was a native of Carlisle in Cumbria and came to London in the early years of the twentieth century where he was encouraged by Frank Brangwyn to take up etching. In 1918 he was made official artist with the new Royal Air Force. The National Portrait Gallery has eight of Simpson's works but none of the present six which are all in the style of the artist's portrait 'ink irregular' of the Earl of Halsbury present in the Gallery's collection.Each of the six caricatures is printed in black within a 17 x 12 cm border. Each has Simpson's original pencil signature three in grey and three in orange outside the border in the bottom right-hand corner. All six are printed on thin paper ranging in size from 18 x 13cm to 19.5 x 13cm and each is backed on a piece of card from 19 x 13.5cm to 21 x 16cm. All six in good condition on aged paper with minimal spotting with the card mounts showing evidence of previous framing. These six caricatures are uncommon: they are not among the eight Simpson items held by the National Portrait Gallery. Originally produced for the 'London Opinion' weekly magazine they were among the fourteen which featured in the 1906 book 'Lions' New York and San Francisco: Morgan Shepard Co. The book itself is scarce: it was only published in America and there are no copies in English libraries listed on COPAC or among the twelve on OCLC WorldCat. In the introduction to 'Lions' C. Haldane Macfall 1860-1928 ranks Simpson with Max Beerbohm F. Carruthers Gould and E. T. Reed as one of the leading English caricaturists adding that there is 'no living caricaturist who can approach Joseph Simpson in decorative sense in massing and arrangement or for beauty of artistry'. Macfall regards Simpson's portrait of Gorky as 'the finest portrait of the Russian upon which I have so far set eyes' and commends 'the aggressiveness of SHAW . the solemn earnestness of HALL CAINE . the poetic absorption of his SWINBURNE'. Simpson was a native of Carlisle in Cumbria and came to London at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1918 he was made official artist of the Royal Air Force. Without place or date postmarked February 1824. 1p. 4to. Fifteen lines. On aged paper and worn paper with loss to text laid down on piece of card. Addressed to 'Mr Penrice Gt Yarmouth'. An amusing communication reading: 'My dear <S>ir I have no more idea than <t>he man in the Moon to whom your letter refers - No Enigma or Delphic Oracle could be more mysterious - Who Mr Smith is - to which of ye Classes of Animals he belong - from whence he came & whither he is gone I know not<.> In which class of animals y<ou> are to be numbered I well know <f>or you are certainly an Odd Fis<h.> Do throw a litt<le> light into my puzzled brain & b<el>ieve me always most truly yours signed Astley Cooper'. 123 Park Street Grosvenor Square London . 10 January 1855. Written on both sides of a 13 x 11 cm piece of paper. Cropped resulting in loss of text from both sides and with the front of the letter i.e. the side not bearing the signature bearing traces of glue from mount. Otherwise in fair condition lightly aged and worn. Ford begins by stating that Colville's 'letter of the 7th has been to Heavitree his country house near Exeter & back & only reached me this morning'. He continues by explaining that 'The Manzanilla is to be had at Gormans 16. Mark Lane & if you use my name you will be sure to be well served.' In the third edition of his 'Handbook for Travellers in Spain' published later in the year Ford would write: 'Excellent manzanilla is to be procured in London of Gorman 16 Mark Lane. Drink it ye dyspeptics!' The recto of the letter ends here but there is clearly text lacking as a result of the cropping as the letter continues on the reverse: '… day. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir I have so much responsibility on my shoulders in the new farce that I really dare not venture into society on those days on which I perform in it.' If he had a holiday he would accept Wilson's 'polite invitation' 'but so situated I am sorry to say it is impossible'. Laid down beneath the address on the second leaf is a cutting of an engraved cartoon titled 'A Great Friend in a Little House' captioned 'The greatest actor that ever appeared on any stage - saving Mathews Yates and Reeves' and showing an elephant and the three actors. According to the History of Parliament Wilson was 'one of the Whig theatrical circle Sheridan whom he introduced to William Stone ‘the traitor’ and Joseph Richardson being friends of his'. He called there that morning and has 'sent on Dr Russells letter of introduction' and has 'written to Dr Moyle' explaining his object and he hopes he will give him permission to have the photod. wh: I consider about the finest piece of dated H English Plate in existence -'. He continues: 'Plate has changed its position since years ago you & I used to talk about it & when you bought the pretty candlestick with the plain columns was it at Torquay' Although it is 'not so great as some of the arts - the skill of handicraft in Silver Plate & architecture seems to me fairly representative of the taste of early England.' 14 March 6 April and 8 October 1951; all three from 57B York Street Baker Street W1 London. See the entries for writer and recipient in the Oxford DNB. The three items in good condition lightly aged with the last carrying minor rusting from paperclip. ONE: 3pp 8vo. She got his office number from ‘Mrs. Popie’ ‘but the line has been busy all the time’. She asks for ‘a pass for darling Ivor’s i.e. Ivor Novello’s memorial service’. The previous week she was ‘playing at the Regent Theatre Hayes & on the Monday night I was weighed down by a dreadful foreboding of disaster’. The play was a ‘psychic thriller’ by Evadne Price ‘Through the Door’ in which she was playing the medium and ‘Sitting in the cabinet during the place I could not shake off this dreadfull depression & when Lea Seidl rang me on Tuesday & told me the tragic news of Ivor I realized why I had felt so awful’. She regards Novello’s ‘passing’ as ‘a national disaster . quite apart from the personal loss we all feel’. Her ‘heart aches for all his friends at the Palace Theatre as it must be torture for them to have to play & hear his music now’. She feels that Novello’s death is ‘almost like losing Max her second husband the concert pianist Max Darewski who died five months into their marriage in 1929 all over again’. She considered Novello ‘a great & wonderful soul & still is as well as a genius. Despite the grimness of the world today he brought light & beauty to everything he touched & everyone he contacted’. At least he ‘gained his wish to go out on the crest of the wave & in harness. Bless him.’ TWO: 2pp 12mo. With thin mourning border. She thanks him for ‘the memorial sheets’ to Novello’s service. ‘Evadne was so glad to have one . I am air-mailing the other to Evelyn at Melbourne’. She agrees that it is ‘very strange about Peter Noble & Ivor’s book’. She hopes MP will ‘do a book about him later on’ MP’s biography of Novello would appear at the end of the year as she feels it would be ‘the only way to put the authentic Ivor before later generations’. THREE: 8 October 1951. 4pp 8vo. Bifolium on grey paper. She thanks him for a ‘wonderful night!’ the Memorial Performance for Novello at Drury Lane 7 October 1951 and feels sure that ‘Mrs. Popie will be interested to hear that I saw Ivor. Max was ith him & Ivor stood with Noel during his lovely speech Coward recited his own ‘Tribute’ in blank verse & then with Tom Arnold. / He smiled & waved to us all & was looking radiant. Wearing a grey cloak like the one in “Perchance to Dreamâ€. Many spirit forms filled the stage until it looked rather like that last scene in “Perchanceâ€.’ She has written to Arnold about a ‘curious coincidence’ regarding ‘the sum raised’ and Novello’s ‘Keep the Home Fires burning’. She offers to sell programmes at the preview of ‘South Pacific’. The letter continues with a discussion of her lack of a telephone and coming departure from her flat. She will be ‘pretty busy speaking on political platforms for the next two weeks’ after which she hopes to do ‘another Gaiety show at the Players’. She mentioned MP’s book in the last Gaiety show ‘which we had to take off despite enormous success through some very ridiculous rule connected with the Stage Rights Society that forbids numbers to be presented usually without the entire book of the Show.’ As a result ‘numbers from famous old Gaiety Shows can only be heard on the radio!’ Accompanying Item Three is a carbon copy 1p 8vo of MP’s typed reply. Begins: ‘My dear Popie / I was rather out of depth on this article - “It was top of the Bill†- so I sent it over to my Father Fleet Street magazine owner Frederick Robert Poke who has been devoted to Music Halls from very early days; and the following are some notes which he sent me which I think I would like to pass on to you fr in the light of what he says you can probably do some revisions on your article.’ A transcription of F. R. Poke’s notes follows. He finds MP’s proposed article ‘rather heavy going. It would be a big wad of stuff to publish but I feel that you should accept it.’ He proceeds with specific points with reference to the Brothers Horne ‘it was a very amusing boxing match’ R. G. Knowles Kate Carney Fred Russell and especially Charlie Whittle ‘When he took London by storm I remember his topping the bill over Marie Lloyd and doing four halls a night.’. Also: ‘I was one of the few people who ever saw Dan Leno dance - he had to give up dancing because of his health.’ The elder Poke continues by stating that he wantd to be a comedian himself. ‘Fred Burnell of the Gee family taught me ho to manipulate a drum-major’s wand. I will show you one day how to do it. And I also learned from some of these people trick-cycling. I could and can I think stand still on a bicycle and ride it backwards - both ways - and do a few other tricks on it.’ He concludes with practical suggests about cutting the article. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr. Whitworth’ and signed ‘Christopher Hampton’. He writes to confirm that he will be free on the date he suggested he ‘might be able to come down to meet you’. He also gives an alternative date. ‘At the moment I’m working on a new translation of “Uncle Vanya†which was to be finished by the end of November. So I’m hoping the meeting will be as informal as possible as I shan’t have very much time to prepare anything in advance.’ He explains that he would prefer ‘a question session in which I might talk about the work I’m doing here at the Royal Court’. Henry Kemble actor. Long Autograph Letter Signed to 'Seymour' entirely written in verse giving a humorous account of his activities in provincial theatre.
Theatre Royal Nottingham 21 September 1871. 8pp. 12mo. Text complete on aged and worn paper. A charming and high-spirited description of life in the provincial theatre in Victorian England in better than average verse showing the influence of Byron's humorous poetry. The letter begins: 'Dear Seymour After long delay And putting off from day to day The duty that to you I owe Of writing lines to let you know How fares it with me well or ill Or else of forwarding a bill I'll now atone for my neglect By sending you with all respect The history of myself in verse.' Among his 'woes' are an unpleasant trip from Scarborough to York: 'It pleased the government to send Some half-a-dozen raw recruits With dirty bodies clothes and boots; To join their regiment in Brum. Into our carriage must they come And what with drinking coughing spitting Around the place where I was sitting The filthy wretches made me sick. I longed to give the brutes the stick.' On arrival in 'fair Nottingham' he goes straight to the playhouse 'And went in front for which I had to pay For Musgrave had directed Sir Alas! Without an order none of us should pass.' He reports a speech from his 'future manager': 'Dear Sir I'm glad to see you pray sit down I'm very busy just arrived from town Where I have been to see if I could find A man to play "Claude Frolls" to my mind . But just oblige me and I think you will We'll put your name as Temple in the bill If you'll consent a smaller part to play For Mr. Wills who's very ill to-day'. References follow to 'Miss Brough the leading lady pretty fair Unsympathetic though and given to stare' and to 'Miss Sidney juvenile' who is 'not much good Her heart is soft Sir but her head is wood. Pretty to look at but not over sage Charming in private wretched on the stage.' Also 'the old woman Mrs. Sennett'; the leading man Brandon Ellis; the 'manager of stage affairs' 'Mr. Nelson'; 'Miss Elton' and 'Boffin Palmer'. 'I saw "Notre Dame" in London & must say Our scenery is as good in every way.' He is happy with business and his landlady and asks to be commended to 'all I know in Liverpool'. He asks him to look out for an opening there: 'As an old man Sir whether grave or funny You won't get many better ones for money' In a prose postscript he states that he has only 'sacrificed truth for the sake of making a rhyme' in the story of the recruits he travelled with: 'they were not going to Birmingham but only to York; their conduct however was as unpleasant as I describe.' Such was the popularity of Warner’s portrayal of George Dixon that the Queen told him it had become part of ‘the British way of life’ and he was carried to his grave by six real officers from Paddington Green Police Station. LETTER: 1p 4to. Folded twice. In good condition lightly aged. Signature ‘Jack.’ and salutation to ‘My dear Popie’ in Warner’s hand; the rest typed. Letterhead with his name. He is sending ‘the long promised photos’ delayed because he ‘had to get some new prints of the “pipe†one. It is the character I play in the film “Carve her name with Pride†with Virginia McKenna and Paul Schofield. / I look a bit scruffy but I think people get a bit fed up with “tidy†pictures and anyway it is the character and after all that is what matters.’ He ‘just got through the show’ on the previous Saturday before going ‘home to bed with “fluâ€. It was a very near thing and I have never felt more like chucking my hand in but only because I could hardly think or see anybody. What we do for ART eh I’d like to meet this fellow Art one of these days.’ In a postscript he states that his ‘Indian doctor performed a miracle’. On letterhead of the Department of English Cornell University Ithaca New York. 22 February 1949. 1p. foolscap 8vo. In fair condition aged and lightly creased with some wear to extremities. Healy begins by thanking Duff for his letter and 'for your generosity in sending me copies of the two letters of Daniel Defoe'. He explains that he has 'searched for their whereabouts for about ten years' and had finally become convinced 'that unless they were in your family they were lost'. The next paragraph of 13 lines discusses 'the relationship between the letters and Bowrey's interest in Juan Fernandos' with reference to: the 'presence of Bowrey's jottings' Sir William Temple Selkirk's return to England in October 1711 and the writing of Robinson Crusoe eight years later. He begins the third paragraph by stating that the reason why Bowrey wanted to see Defoe is 'beyond precise explanation' before reproducing a long note he proposes to publish on the subject with reference to 'Bowrey's first enquiry' and 'Mr. Review'. The fourth paragraph concerns 'the pecuniary value of the manuscripts' with Healy stating that 'since all manuscripts are unique that is a hard question'. He explains how the letters might be offered at auction at 'Sotheby's or Hodgson's of London' adding: 'you might do even better some have by offering them to the Rosenbach Company 15 East 51st Street New York City. Rosenbach is willing to pay high prices for good things and he does so cheerfully.' If Duff follows this course of action Healy suggests that he refers to him 'on the subject of authenticity history importance and the like'. 1900 2 1907 4 and 1908 1. Four from Hickleton Doncaster one from Garrowby Bishop Wilton York one from 79 Eaton Square London and one from Harrowgate. The seven letters total 23pp 12mo. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. The third letter written from Hickleton on 7 January 1907 is in a secretarial hand Halifax being 'laid up with Influenza' and 'utterly good for nothing'; it carries an autograph postscript by Russell at the head of the first page. The first letter 14 July 1900 invites Russell to fill the 'vacancy on the list of Clerical members of our E.C.U. Council'; Russell's acceptance is acknowledged in the second which also discusses charges of 'disloyalty'. The third letter 7 January 1907 refers to 'the battle . on the Education question' which has 'only just begun . I think we want to construct a policy for ourselves & if possible carry the war into the enemy's country'. A week later Halifax discusses a conference in Manchester which he would like to attend despite not feeling 'up to speaking at a public meeting'. The letter includes a two-page statement concerning Halifax's position on 'Undenominationalism' 'as ever the enemy'. Halifax has written to the Bishop of Manchester on the subject of education and feels that 'we ought for one thing to insist that those who want Cowper Temple teaching should pay for it - just as it now seems to be admitted by every one that denominationalists have to pay for their own denominational teaching'. Halifax asks for Russell's and Canon Cleworth's views on the question and the next two letters concern an attempt to arrange a meeting to discuss it with reference to 'good' resolutions in Convocation. In the last letter 19 January 1908 Halifax states that he has been talking to 'Mr Hall' about 'the matter in question' and that while 'he could not of course pledge the Union to any constitution . he feels - as much as I do - and as you express in your letter how entirely the object is one which the Union ought to help'. 1900 (2), 1907 (4) and 1908 (1). The seven items are in good condition though one of Denham’s letters has slight wear to one edge. All date from the same period. The four Denham letters total 5pp foolscap 8vo; three are signed ‘Reg’ and the other ‘Reginald’; two are on his letterhead. The fully-dated Denham letter 8 June 1951 is the longest at 2pp 8vo. Addressed to ‘My dear Mac’ he gives details of a visit he is paying to England to settle his late mother’s affairs ‘She was 83.’ He is also going to ‘confer with Edward Percy. He and his new wife my ex Lilian Oldland you know!! have acquired the dramatic rights to a story by my present wife Mary Orr which appeared in a nation-wide magazine here “To-Day’s Womanâ€. It is entitled “Black Cushion†and is the story of a bigamist.’ He asks MP to contact Eric Barter about this mentioning that his wife wrote the story on which the film ‘All about Eve’ was based. ‘She has a sequel “More about Eve†appearing in the July issue of “Cosmopolitanâ€â€™. Two paragraphs relating to ornithology follow with the comment: ‘Talking of “Bearded Tits†- I am not referring to any portion of Frances Day’s anatomy!!!’ In other letters he again mentions ornithology praises MP’s book ‘Ghosts and Greasepaint’ ‘I read it to an Englishman who has lived here several years - and he burst into tears!! You are magnificent in attack. . Do more of it me lad. Its terrific.’ a short story he has sold ‘to John Shand for English Mystery Magazine’ Sarah Churchill Winston’s daughter an actress referring to MP on American television. She is going to post her Roscoe's 'William I' which she got 'from the Lending Library'. She has not yet read the book 'but a glance made me think we might get a good extract'. P. G. Wodehouse humorist. Two typewritten drafts each with autograph emendations of 'The Day I met the Master' Barrie Pitt's account of his encounter with Wodehouse in Tost internment camp. With printed version the article and other material
1992 and 1993. All items in good condition with minor signs of age. The drafts are both printed on yellow paper. Each is 4pp. 4to. The two appear the same textually but one has two slips of paper with amended text attached and the autograph emendations to the two are different from one another. Also present is a leaf from 'Lifewise' magazine November 1993 with one page carrying Pitt's memoir accompanied by a photograph of Wodehouse being interviewed at Tost by Angus Thuermer. The piece begins: 'I first saw P. G. Wodehouse from behind the barred window of a prison cell in Upper Silesia and was not at that moment particularly interested in who he might be.' The interment camp is 'Ilag VIII b Tost' and Pitt recalls his conversations with Wodehouse 'Oh Lord. Time to feed. Wonder what colour gravy they've boiled the old socks in today' and Wodehouse's advice regarding a short stoy by Pitt and its possible publication 'I wrote Latin hexameters at Dulwich: very useful when it comes to writing lyrics. Cole Porter and I always tried 'em out in Latin first. Showed up the flat spots immediately!'. Pitt is also alowed to 'look through the first chapters of Money in the Bank' which he discusses with Wodehouse. Towards the end he writes: 'I have no idea of the date but the time came when I watched him being escorted down the staircase by a somewhat sinister character and by Sonderfuhrer Heide and two German guards and the next thing I knew was that he had been released and was living in Berlin.' Together with the drafts and magazine version of the article there are also typewritten copies of two letters from Pitt. The first to Bernard Kaukas of the Savage Club 2 April 1992 enquires whether Wodehouse was a member of the Club. The second to Diana Shine of the Society of Authors 21 March 1992 offers the article for publication in the Society's magazine 'The Author'. The collection also includes a TLS to Pitt from Derek Parker editor of 'The Author' 27 March 1992 explaining the reasons for declining the piece. On aged paper with wear to edges and vertical closed tear at foot. She begins by praising his books 'Ladies First' 1952 and 'Shirtfronts and Sables' 1953 adding in an autograph note 'Yes I bought them when in London.' The first contains 'that wonderfully beautiful tribute to Ellen Terry. I don't know when I have read anything which moved me so deeply you rose to great heights when you wrote that. You are beginning to run James Agate very close on my shelves'. She next turns to her books on Henry Irving and Ellen Terry: 'Did you read the Shaw-Terrty letters - autograph note: 'Of course you did!' they sent my blood pressure mounting sky high - his at least. What a stupid wind bag of a man and how charming her letters were to him. It was the same with Mrs Patrick Campbell's letter to him and from him.' The rest of the letter contains references to 'dear Seymour Hicks' 'adorable Ella' and a trip on her birthday 'to Asolo where Duse lived': 'Oh what a sad town and the saddest of all the room in the little museum filled with her belongings - some photographs one signed one of Ibsen looking furious with the world in general some books a few bits of rather paltry jewellry and some dresses and shoes. There was the inevitable intense letter written by that cad d'Annunczio sic in his sprawling self satisfied writing'. She ends with an apology for 'this over long and - no doubt - badly spelt - letter' and with remembrances to 'Mrs "Mac.Pope"'. TWO: 5 August 1953. 1p. 4to. I was born within sight of the Crystal Palace and can even remember the great fire on one Sunday afternoon when part of the 'Tropical End' was burned to the ground. Those Courts with the fine casts of statues of all periods taught me how to look at their originals in many places. I wonder what has become of the two of the Venus de Milo; one with a hidden wedge of wood on her back and the other without that wedge which was only discovered when she was take to pieces & sent into the country for safety before the siege of Paris in 1869-70 It is not realised by the people who crowd orchestral concerts in these days that in the 'seventies there were very few - just the Philharmonic & the Crystal Palace until Richler Presumably Johann Baptist Isidor Richter came to London. At the Crystal Palace we heard many novelties and became familiar with much which is now old-fashioned. Sarasati played Tchaichovsky's sic Violin Concerto there during the life of the composer and we heard scraps of 'Parsifal'. How that choice murdered the Grail Music! Yours sincerely A.E.F. Horniman". He was successively president of the London Medical Society the Royal Society of Medicine the Royal College of Physicians and the Eugenics Society and was also Physician-in-Ordinary to King George V. Waterston was Bute Professor of Anatomy at the University of St Andrews from 1914 to 1942. In 1913 while Professor of Anatomy at King's College London he was the first authority to debunk the Piltdown Man hoax. 1p 16mo. On letterhead of 18 York Terrace Regent's Park London. 3 January 1899. 1p. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition with light signs of age. He is enclosing a cheque for two guineas towards 'The Frederic Fund' and writes that he had 'the pleasure of often meeting Mr Harold Frederic at the Savage Club some years ago'. He was 'deeply grieved to hear of his sad & untimely end'. He hopes enough money will be collected to be an 'appreciable help to his widow & children'. The letter relates to a celebrated Victorian scandal. In 1884 Frederic had come to England with his wife and five children as the London correspondent of the New York TImes. He set up a second household with Kate Lyon with whom he had a further three children. Lyons was a Christian Scientist and when Frederic suffered a stroke in 1898 she tried to cure him by faith healing. At the instigation of Mrs Frederic Lyon was tried for manslaughter but was acquitted. Although the recipient is not named the letter is from a batch addressed to W. J. Fisher. Addressed with black ink circular postmark '20 NO' on reverse of second leaf ''To Mr Ellis att Mr Taverners in Thread-needle Street'. The letter begins: 'Nothing can yield Persons in our Stations greater Satisfaction than to be entertain'd in our silent Retirement with some harmless amusements from a facetious & learned Correspondent. for without these while we were endeavouring with ye uttmost Diligence to know ye World as some People please to call it we shouldn't att last know whether wee were in it or not; But like ye People that never go beyond ye Smoak of ye Town Chimneys stare att every thing wee see & imagine ye Rest of Mankinde to be a new Creation.' He explains that he has resolved to 'preserve a Correspondence with those I knew before' and to 'form a new one with those whose extensive Character only made 'em known to me'. He hopes to pay Ellis 'in Current Coin; which I hope you will comply with & speedily lay your demands on' Murdin. Between 1740 and 1759 Murdin published his valuable 'Collection of State Papers relating to affairs in the reign of Elizabeth from 1571 to 1596: transcribed from original papers and other authentic memorials left by W. Cecill Lord Burghley and reposited in the library at Hatfield House.' Johnson stated in Boswell's Life that the 'most literary conversation' he ever enjoyed was at the table of 'Jack Ellis a money scrivener behind the Royal Exchange' at whose house he at one point dined twice a week. The main topic of the letter is Marshall's work preparing his book 'Prepare to shed them now. The Ballads of George R. Sims' London: Hutchinson 1968. A long and characteristic letter. After references to their meeting at the British Museum and to 'that excellent bookseller Mr Wallace of The Guild Hall Bookshop' 'he showed me a selection of the Dagonet Ballads – nothing like as good as the copy you saw' he turns to a 'Sims letter' which Spilstead sent him: 'I cant at the moment date it. He was living in Clarence Terrace Regents Park when he died in 1922. … He was a cagey chap personally. Acknowledged marrying Florence Wykes in 1901 but in 1886 dedicated a book to his gentle wife Bessie.' He continues: 'I think that I have all I want of G. R. S's books from the London Library. My Hutchinson book will be hung on the Dagonet Ballads. I am chiefly interested in visual material. I've located a film of Christmas Day in the Workhouse. But I think there must have been Temperance Lantern Slides of other poems. I'd like to find also engravings etc of Slum Conditions Prostitution East End music halls etc around the 1880's 1890's.' He explains that his life is 'a bit chaotic' with a cousin 'going quitely sic mad in Edinburgh while her octogenerian sic mother wont die'. He has got to go to Scotland 'to see what can unobtrusively be done. Also until I can disentangle what Sims's copyright position is I cant be sure despite Hutchinsons wish to do the book whether they can get the clearances.' Spilstead's invitation to dine at Rule's is 'delightful'; it is one of his favourite restaurants 'Ruled usually Out now that one can't charge what for a free lance sic are legitimate expenses'. He concludes: 'Lunches with daughters are special. See his entry and that of Matheson Lang in the Oxford DNB. As the latter states Britton and Lang had married in 1903 she had been an actress with him in the Benson company since 1901. They toured together in Lang’s company with Britton usually as his leading lady. ‘In 1914 they helped to inaugurate Shakespeare productions at the Old Vic under Lilian Baylis for which Lang personally lent costumes and scenery.’ Britton was for many years a member of the Old Vic's governing board. Both items are signed ‘N. Matheson Lang’. ONE: ALS 28 April 1948. Air Mail letter on blue paper with Marine Hotel letterhead. In fair condition a little creased and aged but with the postage stamp torn away resulting in the loss of a few words of text. She begins by thanking him for his ‘charming little letter of sympathy’. Lang had died at Bridgetown 11 April 1948. She was greatly touched by his ‘kind remembrance’ of her husband. She is hoping ‘Joan’ has kept the ‘home papers’ for her. She describes her plans for her return in June or July: ‘I am going to the rooms we had reserved at The Hendon Hall Hotel anyway to start with till I can find myself as it was. One doesn’t quite know what to try to do till one gets back. Life is indeed strange to me at the moment.’ TWO: ALS 15 October 1951. 1 October 1951. 1p 4to. In fair condition lightly aged. He thanks him for his letter ‘arising from the television programme with Melvyn Bragg’ and expresses agreement ‘about a boycott in South Africa. No British Government could afford the economic cost of severing economic relations with South Africa and of boycotting in that sense. He thanks her for giving him ‘so delightful an opportunity of meeting you and to ask me to stay in your charming house and meet your friends who were all so nice to me’. He ‘enjoyed the whole thing more than I can say and indeed the reputed hospitality of your country delights me on every hand’. He begins: 'Having some communication last week with Mr. Charles Heath in the course of conversation he was regretting that he could not procure any proofs of plates engaraved by Mr. Raimbach - now as your Kindness gained me what I wished of his performance with an obliging offer of something more it occurred to me to solicit fom Mr. Heath a print you wanted & I ventur'd to promise him in exchange one of Mr. Raimbachs'. He is enclosing a note not present 'by which you will perceive the terms on which Mr. Heath wishes to treat'. He is sending Balmanno Heath's print 'but whether you can in return for some invaluables which it is in his power to procure give him the extent of his wishes I know not'.
