Sir Charles Beaumont Phipps Equerry to Queen Victoria. Autograph Letter Signed 'C. B. Phipps' to '<Newland>' the photograph J. W. Newland or his wife explaining why the Queen must decline 'the Daguerrotypes'.
Windsor Castle. 18 November 1854. The recipient's name given at the foot of the last page appears to read 'Mr. L. Newland' or 'Newlaw'. This may be J. W. Newland was an English daguerreotypist and magic lanternist who travelled from New Orleans through Central and South America to the Pacific New Zealand Australia England and finally to Calcutta between 1845 and 1857. 2pp. 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. He has submitted the recipient's letter to the Queen 'together with the Daguerrotypes that accompanied it'. He explains that while the queen 'perfectly appreciated your attention in wishing to present these Daguerrotypes to Her Majesty' there can be 'no departurte' from a 'rule laid down … that Her Majesty cannot accept any Articles offered to Her' as it would create 'a very insidious distinction'. ONE: Her ACS to MP from Wyndham’s Theatre postmarked London 6 October 1953. TWO: Copy of TL from MP to Caird 13 October 1953. The other two items without date or place but contemporaneous. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See his entry and hers in the Oxford DNB. Caird was Northcliffe’s right-hand man and mainly associated with the Daily Mail. The four items are in fair condition lightly aged and creased with slight rust spotting from a paper clips. Items Two to Four are on carbon paper. ONE: ACS from Tutin to MP. Small unillustrated postcard signed ‘Dorothy Tutin’. Reads: ‘I remember you very well - your fascinating letures at the Academy i.e. London theatre school RADA the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art - and shall be very happy to meet you for this article. You sound so busy that perhaps Saturday 3.30 Stage door is also better for you - We could talk over tea. Otherwise I am free Friday for lunch if you would prefer - Just leave message S. Door.’ TWO: Carbon copy of TLS from MP to Sir Andrew Caird of Associated Newspapers 13 October 1953 with carbon copy of MP’s signature. 1p 4to. A covering letter for Item Three. ‘I have tried to draw a picture of the girl as I know her - as she showed herself to me he we had tea last Saturday. She was one of my audience when I lectured at the R.A.D.A. but I didnt know it. But it took away her reserve and made her natural.’ He apologises for his bad typing and states that he is ‘nearly dead as a result of the Drury Lane production. but that was worth it’. Regarding the article he concludes that it is ‘a bit long I fear - there is so much to say’. THREE: Carbon of Typed Article titled ‘Dorothy Tutin - Star in Spite of Herself. / by / W. Macqueen-Pope’. 6pp 4to. Begins: ‘On the stage at Wyndhams Theatre London is a play called “The Living Room†a young girl is staring at Death. . And what makes it all the more remarkale is that the actress who plays it Dorothy Tutin aged twenty two - is not a bit like that. She is a little creature of immense vitality whose wide eyes and parted lips do indeed gaze before her - not at Death but at Life which stretches in such a long long vista before her. She is twenty two she has been on the stage about five years - and she is playing a difficult exacting role - a leading role amidst a brilliant company in a most notable play at one of London’s most successful theatres. And yet she did not want to be an actress at all.’ Concludes: ‘The writer of these words lectured for a long while to the students of the R.A.D.A. He used to look at the young people in front of him and wonder how many of them would make the grade. His half century of hard experience taught him that the percentage would be very few. . Dorothy Tutin sat there listening to words about her calling - and in Dorothy Tutin our stage has an Actress - with a capital A - who does not look nor behave like an actress at all. Which makes her all the better.’ FOUR: Original set of MP’s typed notes from his interview headed ‘Dorothy Tutin’ with carbon copy of same. ‘A London girl. / Drinks milk to put on weight. Not successful . She heard a broadcast of students at the R.A.D.A. and what they had to do. It frightened her. She got an audition and failed. / She tried again and got into the R.A.D.A. Prep. Her parents urged the frightened girl to try it for a term. / She had to go from Putney to Highgate every day - 1 1/2 hours and was scared all the time of what was ahead of her. . She had actually played Macbeth himself when at school . she remembers the chapel organ peeling out as she was dying / She didnt feel strange at all in the part despite the fact that the girl who played Lady Macbeth was much bigger than she. . Wants to play Shakespeare - afraid of her voice. . Does not look or behave the least bit like an actress. . 'I might even take Sheffield before Manchester if that would be more convenient to you only that perhaps the holidays hanging over me would be bad for the engagement.' No date circa 1865. See Jacob’s entry and Colenso’s in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. Addressed to ‘The / Revd. R. Wilkins’. The letter clearly a circular addressed to members of the English Church Union begins without salutation: ‘If you could raise even a few pounds in your branch it would be a great help towards undoing the mischief which the defection of the Chief Pastor of teh Church in Natal has caused & would be a great encouragement to the colonists in any future attempt to provide for the two large neglected districts still unrepresented by the Church. Please accept this as my excuse for troubling you - / And / Believe me / faithfully yours / Edgar Jacob.’ In a postscript Jacob apologizes for being ‘unable owing to press of work to write to you before leaving Oxford.’ He then gives a list of seven subscribers headed by ‘The Bishop of Oxford’ a pound and ‘The Chancellor of the Exchequer’ five guineas. Beneath this list at the foot of the second page is a list in what is probably Wilkins’ hand of four individual contributions totaling £3 1s 6d from the ‘Exeter Branch E. C. U. &c &c’. R. J. Burn Rodney Joseph Burn English painter. Three Autograph Letters Signed and one unsigned to ‘Mr Lawrence’ regarding his work his studio and ‘Mr Daniel’ Sir Augustus Moore Daniel the new Director of the National Gallery.
One dated 10 September 1928 the others without year but around the same time. All from 2 Hill Way Highgate N.6. London. One also with ‘Studio address / 7 Park Hill studios / Park Hill road / Hampstead’. After serving in the Great War Burn son of Sir Joseph Burn studied at the Slade between 1918 and 1922 winning six prizes. After teaching in London at the Royal College and in Boston he offered his services to the war effort. After the war he went back to the Royal College as a senior tutor. The four ot the items here are in fair condition lightly worn and discoloured. Each is folded once for postage. Although only one is dated the others appear to date from around the same time. ONE ‘Monday’: 1p 4to. Unsigned. Arranging for Lawrence to visit his studio: ‘We will show you what we have got in the way of oil sketches but I rather doubt if there is any thing very suitable however come and see.’ TWO 21 July 1928: 2pp 12mo. He has written to ‘Guthrie’ to say that Lawrence is going to visit. ‘I will keep the sketch that I am working on for you at £10. I am sure it will be a masterpiece.’ In a postscript he announces that he is ‘going away to morrow with my Father for a week and I will tell him about your nephue sic then.’ THREE 10 September 1928: 2pp 4to. He has finished working from Lawrence’s sketch and will be sending the painting. ‘You said at the N.E.A.C. when I saw you last that you would be interested to see the larger picture of the same subject’. He renews his invitation to the sudio as it would be safer for Lawrence to ‘take the sketch away’. He has ‘got quite a number of new things’ to show Lawrence and is ‘now the proud possessor of a morris Car’. Regarding the future Sir Augustus Moore Daniel 1866-1950 he writes: ‘What good news about Mr Daniel being made director of the National Gallery We must all prepare lists of pictures to be taken from the walls & lists of pictures to take their places. I wrote to him with the suggestion but he replied that he had no intention of being a new broom.’ FOUR 5 February 1929: 2pp 12mo. He begins by thanking him for the cheque for ten pounds. He did not go ‘to the sale of Marchants pictures’: ‘fortunately he had not got any of mine as I expect they would have gone for a penny or so’. He ends with news of his wife’s health. Burn was married to the sculptor Dorothy Sharwood Smith. One dated 10 September 1928, the others without year, but around the same time. All from 2 Hill Way, Highgate N.6. [London]. One unknown

Leighton’s entry in the Oxford DNB explains that ‘In 1954 she began a long run nearly four years in London and New York as Anne Shankland and Sybil Railton-Bell in the double bill of Terence Rattigan's Separate Tables co-starring with Eric Portman and winning a Tony award as best actress.’ 2pp 4to. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr Sephton’ with good bold signature ‘Margaret Leighton.’ In good condition lightly aged folded for postage. 7 February 1896. London: 242 Portsdown Road W. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. Aged worn and with spots of discoloration. 106 lines in a truly execrable hand. The following reading is tentative. The recipient is not named and the letter is signed ‘T. Outram Marshall’. The letter begins: ‘My dear Sir / I also read the letters in the Guardian very carefully’. There follow references to ‘the argument of a pamphlet as to the Teaching of Holy Scripture’. The third paragraph begins: ‘But to my mind the words of the Council of Arles are evidence that in 314 the Bps. there assembled believed just what our Petitioner says.’ He quotes a Latin test and discusses it. There are three long numbered objections. and three assertions are given of which ‘We are convinced’. He discusses what is the case ‘If “the High Ch. Party†is not content with the Scripture & the existing Laws of the English & whole western Ch’. He is glad that the recipient does not agree on one point ‘with the Bp. of London’ ‘But if you do not - what remains - you say the husband of this unfaithful wife - has permission to marry again - then it follows that he has permission to dissolve the bond which till he desides to do so - has not been broken. This is a wholly new theory which as yet no Bp. East or West has fulfilled. / Forgive my writing this - I want to shew you how very insecure is your foothold’. 7 February 1896. On both sides of a 14.5 x 10 cm card with no printing but for the name ‘GWEN WATFORD’ in red at the head of recto. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr Sephton’ and with good firm signature ‘Gwen Watford’. In good condition lightly aged. Twelves lines of neatly written text. She has ‘just finished another mid-week matinee’ and is writing thank him for his ‘most encouraging letter’ which she will ‘treasure’. ‘The critics are never kind to Jeffrey Archer but his actors are enormously grateful for the parts he has written & the chances he gives us to use our skills’. Addressed by Fisher to ‘Miss Mayra sic Lynd / 5 Keats Grove / Hampstead / NW.’ Signed by Fisher with initials ‘H F’. Reads: ‘What charming verses! You might as easily have replied otherwise eg / Hola! un gant! / Bonnet rouges en avant! / A la Bourgeoisie / choisie / Aux capitalistes / Farceurs fumistes / un gant de / etc etc / H F’. The recipient writes the following lengthwise on the address side: ‘H. A. L. She thanks him for the letter and ‘the lovely Shamrock’ which she has planted ‘in a little pot as it was so very thoughtful of you to sentd it to me for Good Luck’. Two volumes. <br/> VERY PRETTY CONTEMPORARY SCARLET STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO covers with gilt-ruled frame decorated with multiple overlapping gilt door handle tools and floral cornerpieces central panel with gilt-ruled lozenge enclosed by gilt rules and blind floral rolls raised bands compartments gilt wide turn-ins ruled in gilt and with repeating flower motif in blind and small gilt circles in the centers green inlaid cornerpieces with gilt tooling blue watered silk endpapers all edges gilt. With eight plates after Henry Fuseli including frontispiece to each volume. Verso of front free endpaper with armorial bookplate of Lewis Way. ◆Spines a little sunned corners a bit worn and tending to turn inward light scuffing to extremities plates lightly foxed but the text extremely clean and the pleasing bindings with minor issues only.<br/> <br/> This is an attractively illustrated and handsomely bound edition of the finely crafted poetry of William Cowper 1731-1800 the most notable English poet before the Romantics in terms of a tendency to be confessional in one's verse. Given the fact that he was institutionalized and that he several times attempted suicide these self-revelatory poems can easily be seen as a kind of therapeutic experience and it is testimony to the complexity of his personality that so much of Cowper's verse is light conversational and epigrammatic. His poems range widely from religious reflections to translations of Homer to poetry inspired by a lady's suggestion that he could write on any topic including a sofa see vol. II p. 1. The plates here were designed by Henry Fuseli 1741-1825 a Swiss-born painter who lived mainly in England. He was best known for his paintings exploring the supernatural as well as his influence on the young William Blake. DNB calls him "A superb and intensely dramatic draughtsman . . . notorious for his sensational demonic irrational and bizarre subjects" leading "the surrealists to claim him as a forerunner." Though unsigned the bindings here are extremely attractive with tasteful gilding and luxurious touches such as wide decorative turn-ins and watered silk endleaves. This copy was previously owned by Lewis Way an Evangelical reverend who made it his mission to promote Christianity among the Jews. It was his particular belief that returning Jews to the Holy Land would fulfill a biblical prophecy and to this end he secured several audiences with Tsar Alexander I in the attempt to persuade him to the cause. His home at Stansted Park reportedly contained a library that included rare Judaica and Hebraica. J. Johnson unknown

1924 Autographed Letter Signed from Sir Frank Dicksee to the Dutchess
Maida Vale London 1924. Loose_leaf. Very Good. Single sheet of laid paper written on both sides. Approximately 160 words. Measuring roughly 6 x 4 inches with a single horizontal crease. CONDITION: scattered very faint finger-soiling else fine. ALS on personal stationery with very posh Maida Vale NW 6 address engraved top right edge. Fantastic content. A marvelous window onto the mores of English society in the 1920's. Dicksee would have been in his 70's at the time of this letter and presumably should have known better than to wear his "old stable jacket" to a soiree of the Dutchess's.but do we ever learn some of us do we ever learn Despite our best efforts we never have been able to identify exactly which Dutchess this event pertains to. We even contacted the author of Dicksee's definitive biography "Frank Dicksee: 1853-1928; His Art and Life" by Simon Toll 2017. ACC Publishing but he was as stumped as we were. For your reading pleasure here is the our best efforts to decipher the letter's eccentric handwriting: "Jan. 18 1924. Dear Duchess I find to my dismay that I owe you a considerable apology for appearing in your beautiful house and amidst your distinguished guests in a sort of "old stable jacket" -it is the sort of thing that I mostly wear in the evening and I suppose it was put out & I must have put it on while thinking of something else & I never became aware of the solecism I had committed until I took the wretched thing off before going to bed. Your Grace may not have noticed this. My only consolation is that the men present at least would not take me now P.R.A. to be the son of a tailor as his costume was without tails. and indecipherable. Really I am most sorry that any guest of yours should be so careless and uncouth. I of course indecipherable to where this delinquent has to sign himself in all humiliation Yrs Sincerely Frank Dicksee." " Frank Dicksee was born at a time when the first wave of Pre-Raphaelitism was beginning to make its presence felt in Britain and he inherited the romantic spirit of the movement that had been founded only a stone's throw from his childhood home. After early success with his painting of unrequited love Harmony he rose to be one of the most popular artists of the late 19th-century painting in a sumptuous and dramatic style. Dicksee's family was a veritable dynasty of artists but it is Frank who is best known and loved today for his Pre-Raphaelite inspired subjects. He enrolled in the Royal Academy in 1870 and quickly achieved success elected to the Academy in 1891 and became President of the Royal Academy in 1924."
