Descendiente de una rica familia dedicada a la industria textil Maurois realizó estudios secundarios en Ruan Liceo Corneille y superiores en Caen. Tuvo como profesor al filósofo Alain que le animó a tomar el camino de la escritura. Ante la perspectiva de tomar la dirección del negocio familiar optó por la literatura. Durante la I Guerra Mundial sirvió como intérprete del Estado Mayor británico lo que le familiarizó con el carácter y la cultura anglosajona. En 1938 ingreso en la Academia francesa. Durante la II Guerra Mundial luchó por la Francia libre como capitán del ejército francés y se refugió en Estados Unidos al negar su obediencia al gobierno pro-nazi de Vichy. Estuvo asimismo con las fuerzas aliadas en Ãfrica del norte en 1943. A su regreso a Francia en 1946 siendo recibido con todos los honores siguió escribiendo y llegó a alcanzar una avanzada edad falleciendo a los 82 años el 9 de octubre de 1967. André Maurois recibió en vida el homenaje del mundo intelectual -aparte de la admiración del público- y entre otras distinciones la de académico siéndole otorgada también la Gran Cruz de la Legión de Honor. Inteligente desapasionadamente objetivo escritor de fama por sus novelas y sus biografÃas en las que destacó gracias a una profunda documentación y amenidad André Maurois fue un profundo conocedor del alma humana; leerle constituye un verdadero placer.
