The Razor’s Edge.
London: William Heinemann Ltd 1944. First British edition of Maugham's 20th-century manifesto for human fulfillment. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. An exceptional example. "Written after much painstaking research into Eastern philosophy and mysticism The Razor's Edge is Maugham's 20th-century manifesto for human fulfillment. In it he mercilessly satirizes American and European materialism and holds up the figure of the spiritual seeker as a model for those searching for meaning in existence" Stringer. It was twice adapted into film first in 1946 starring Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney and Herbert Marshall as Maugham and Anne Baxter as Sophie and then a 1984 adaptation starring Bill Murray. Of Human Bondage.
London: William Heinemann 1915. First edition first printing which includes list of other "Works" by Maugham facing half-title plus publisher's ad page for works by other authors on half-title verso with the misprint on page 257 line 4 "help" of Maugham's masterpiece. Octavo bound in three quarter morocco by Bayntun with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands marbled endpapers gilt topstain. In near fine condition. Maugham's longest and most ambitious novel in which 'fact and fiction are inextricably mixed' draws heavily upon the author's own youth with circumstances and names scarcely altered" Parker 63. "As early as 1911 Maugham had retired temporarily from the theatre to work on his long novel Of Human Bondage. He was to correct the proofs under the admiring eyes of Desmond MacCarthy in a small hotel at Malo near Dunkirk; the two men were drivers in an ambulance unit for which they had volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914. Of Human Bondage was published in 1915. It was less noticed in wartime London than in New York where Theodore Dreiser reviewed it with enthusiasm. It remains Maugham's most impressive literary work and by the time of his death 1965 was said to have sold ten million copies" DNB. It was the basis for the 1934 film directed by John Cromwell starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis. William Heinemann unknown books

W. Somerset Maugham story; David Goodis and James Gunn screenwriters; Vincent Sherman director; Ann Sheridan Lew Ayres Zachary
The Unfaithful Original Film Pressbook
Burbank CA: Warner Brothers 1947. Original Pressbook for the 1947 film noir.

A little-seen noir with an interesting history. Based on the 1940 film "The Letter" which is in turn an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's 1926 short story of the same title first collected in "The Casuarina Tree". Written for the screen by David Goodis and James Gunn. The film infamously failed to give credit to Maugham's story though the fact that it was so studiously reworked probably has much to do with the author's lack of interest in making a legal matter of it.

Ann Sheridan plays a woman in distress accused of lying about her connection with a murdered man is eventually acquitted in court. Her character presents a unique picture of the noir female being neither afraid for her sanity or her life and yet a victim of postwar instability and infidelity in the context of being a military wife Silver et al.

16 pages saddle stapled folded once 11 x 17 inches. Very Good plus with slight separation at the spine a few tiny closed tears and light stressing to the fold.

Selby US. Silver Classic Noir. Spicer US. Warner Brothers unknown books

W. Somerset Maugham
Author's holograph ink sketch for the design of the jacket for "The Razor's Edge
London: William Heinemann 1944. W. Somerset Maugham's holograph ink sketch showing his jacket design concept for the American edition of his greatest novel "The Razor's Edge" executed in holograph black ink on a blank Western Union telegram form. Remarkably the design a somewhat more elaborate version of the stark UK jacket was not only considered by the publisher but followed pretty much to the letter. A striking piece of ephemera demonstrating that the author's intentions for the book were honored from the text to the jacket itself including his signature Moroccan symbol used on nearly all his books including reprints; and an interesting example of a major author's notion of self-representation.

In his somewhat autobiographical book "The Summing Up" Maugham wrote of the symbol: "I think my father had a romantic mind. He took it into his head to build a house to live in during the summer. He bought a piece of land on the top of a hill at Suresnes. The view was splendid over the plain and in the distance was Paris. There was a road down to the river and by the river lay a little village. It was to be like a villa on the Bosphrous and on the top flow it was surrounded by loggias. I used to go down with him every Sunday by the Seine on a bateaumouche to see how it was getting on. When the roof was on my father began to finish it by buying a pair of antique fire irons. He ordered a great quantity of glass on which he had engraved a sign against the Evil Eye which he had found in Morocco and which the reader may see on the cover of this book. It was a white house and the shutters were painted red. The garden was laid out. The rooms were furnished and then my father died."

Near Fine 6 x 8.25 inches.
