At a time when the public museum was still a relatively recent innovation, private collections were quite easily accessible for local and international visitors of the same social rank as the collectors. By the beginning of the twentieth century, however, the collector?s position in the public sphere had changed dramatically. Private collections were less accessible to an ever-expanding and increasingly culture-consuming public, and functioned more strongly in the context of the personal and explicitly private aims and networks of their owners. This book uncovers the premises and reasons for private collectors? shifting public role and relevance in nineteenth-century Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. It examines the specific social, cultural, political, artistic and material context of private collectors? activity. Its main focus is on three related issues: 1) collectors? social profiles and networks; 2) collectors? tastes; and 3) the function, accessibility, display and reception of the collections. Attention is also paid to the differences between Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent with regard to the urban collecting cultures. Beim Namen des Autors dürfte es sich um ein Pseudonym handeln, das wir allerdings nicht auflösen konten. Auch die Online-Kataloge deutscher Bibliotheken - das Werk scheint nur in Stuttgart vorhanden zu sein - helfen nicht weiter. Auch der Namen des Vorwort-Schreibers dürfte in Wirklichkeit nicht ganz so lauten. Erstaunlich ist, daß es einen Kasseler Psychologie-Professor und Künstler namens Ewald Rumpf gibt, der auf dem "Stückhof" wohnt. Das scheint uns mehr als Zufall zu sein. Ob der Autor Student von Rumpf war ? Prima edizione di quest'opera del celebre scrittore, editore, bibliofilo e letterato francese, Octave Uzanne (Auxerre, 14 settembre 1851 – Saint-Claud, 31 ottobre 1931). L'edizione venne curata nei minimi particolari dall'editore Albert Quantin, suo grande amico e bibliofilo a sua volta. Uzanne, nel 1889, con altre 160 persone, fonda la Société des bibliophiles contemporains che successivamente diviene la Société des bibliophiles indépendants, il cui editore più attivo sarà Henri Floury. “Frequenta i circoli di Art nouveau, che influenza significativamente, e del Simbolismo; si lega in particolare con Jean Lorrain, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Remy de Gourmont, Albert Robida e con quest'ultimo Uzanne lavora alla stesura di un libro di racconti per bibliofili, che contiene il celebre racconto futuristico intitolato La Fin des livres (1895)”.
