El cr�tico rom�ntico y te�rico Friedrich Schlegel la consideraba en su �poca con una importancia comparable a la de la Revoluci�n francesa y la filosof�a de Johann Gottlieb Fichte. Geisteskr�ftig und liebevoll bis zum letzten Hauche schied er von uns im drei und achtzigsten Lebensjahre." Diese Version wurde verworfen da der Buchstabe "O" im zweiten Vornamen zu weit nach unten verschoben ist und der Inhalt als Kritik an dem behandelnden Arzt Carl Vogel 1798-1864 Goethes letztem Vertrauensarzt aufgefasst werden konnte. In der endg�ltigen ge�nderten Fassung lautete die Todesursache schliesslich "Stickfluss in Folge eines nerv�s gewordenen Katharrhalfiebers". - Diese erste Fassung auf normalem Velinpapier mit breitem Rand. - Beiliegend: Carlyle Thomas.
