L'esperienza italiana rappresenta una tappa decisiva nel percorso formativo del poeta: è alla luce della conoscenza della cultura classica che si compie la formazione estetica e scientifica di Goethe. Un'idea di classico carpita nelle immagini artistiche che fanno da ambiente al suo viaggio e si imprimono "nella mente e nell'anima", diventando, di riflesso, criterio di lettura e comprensione di quelle naturali. L'originalità dell'approccio scientifico di Goethe alla natura, smarcandosi dalle impostazioni concettuali e metodologiche dell'epistemologia moderna, si rende affine a un'antica visione del mondo che egli matura filtrata dalla percezione delle forme artistiche italiane, classiche e soprattutto rinascimentali. Formazione e creatività, fenomeno originario e stile sono le parole chiave, le coordinate che, nella visione goethiana, definiscono il campo unitario di natura e arte. Per questo, lo studio morfologico può prestarsi come paradigma anche dell'indagine estetica oltre che naturale, ovvero come metodo di lettura delle forme artistiche e, allo stesso tempo, come metodo di comprensione della creatività che ha permesso la realizzazione di quelle forme. Il pensiero morfologico inaugurato da Goethe, basato sulla conoscenza intuitiva e veicolato dalla visione, collocandosi a metà strada tra arte e scienza, rappresenta un importante codice di lettura delle immagini, riconsiderate nel loro pieno valore gnoseologico. Un pensiero che ha avuto un forte impatto nel Novecento, rivelandosi anacronisticamente contemporaneo.‎
