One of 300 copies quarto size 51 pp. The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily Märchen or Das Märchen is a fairy tale by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 1749-1832 first published in 1795 in Friedrich Schiller's magazine "Die Horen" The Horae. It concludes Goethe's novella rondo "Conversations of German Emigrants" 1795 and is regarded as the founding example of the genre of "Kunstmärchen" or artistic fairy tale. The action of the story and its characters are continually faced with the dilemma of crossing a river or temporarily bridging it. The story acts as a metaphor or parable for the divide between the internal and external world and the aspirations of man to permanently bridge the two. <br/><br/>This was the first book illustrated by Ann Arnold and the last time she worked in linoleum. Munchen: Bremer Presse 1922. Paper label front cover. Essentially no wear to the covers. Minor fading at edges. This is copy #5/500 examples printed on a handpress. Published by Ernst Schulte-Strathaus. Initial letters and titles by Anna Simons. Nineteen lines of comment on rear pastedown in German the first part a quote from Peter Altenberg about the poem followed by comments of Iain sic Vater regarding the Presse and Munchen light brown ink in a neat hand dated 12 August 1951. A beautiful copy from the Bremer Presse with wide margins and fine typography. The Bremer Presse was the most important German press started in Bremen in 1911 by Ludwig Wolde and Willy Wiegard. The press was modeled after the Doves Press in England. They rejected ornament except for initials and relied upon carefully chosen types and painstaking presswork to make the desired effect. The press was moved to Munich in 1939 and was destroyed in the bombings of 1944. Encyclopaedia Britannica Goethe 1749-1832 wrote this epic poem between 1796-1797. It is set around 1792 at the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars when French forces under General Custine invaded and briefly occupied parts of the Palatinate region of Germany. First illustrated edition first issue with the plate after p. 42 showing the fox diving under a monk's habit suggestive of something delightfully naughty which is perhaps why the plate was later suppressed. Rebacked with original spine laid down; some very light rubbing along edges of boards; scattered foxing throughout mostly marginal though sometimes infringing into the text or illustrations. Wilhelm von Kaulbach's fine engravings and remarkably detailed anthropomorphic animals enliven Goethe's version of the 13th-century allegory known in English literature as "Reynard the Fox." Some scattered staining and spotting as often the case. Some pages here are very fresh others not so fresh; but in all a very good copy. The First Edition of the First Complete English Translation of Part One of Goethe's Faust. There were several editions of this book this being the edition with the accompanying plates. The translation was anonymous at the time of printing; it was first incorrectly credited to George Soane. This copy bound for well-known Goethe collector Ernst Magnus his pictorial bookplate on front pastedown. Goethe was born on August 28th 1749 in Frankfurt. This publication was part of a series dedicated to Goethe and published songs and various memorials dedicated to him on his birthday. Early copies date from 1819 and the publishing tradition seems to continue into the 1920ís. This 1830 copy is imprinted with Goetheís birthday and appears 81 years after his death. The city of Weimar where Goethe was chief minister and held many town directorships still continues the traditional celebration of Goetheís birthday but in the form of a wine festival. <br/><br/> Weimar: 28 August 1830. hardcover books

First Edition of the first segment in its complete form though previously appeared in 1790 as a partial printing Faust A Fragment. In an unusual three-quarter early 20th-century art binding with brown marbled paper over metallic patterned cloth. Near Fine. Light working to front cover. Foxing throughout. Browning and light old tidemark to preliminary pages. Loss to lower marine of page 293 with no textual loss. A beautiful copy of what is considered by many to be one of the finest works of German literature. Part II was completed in 1831 and was not published until after Goethe's death in 1832.
