Eletto sindaco di Bordeaux rimase in carica sino al 1585; ritornò poi al suo lavoro prediletto e aggiunse un terzo libro agli Essais che arricchì fino all'ultimo di nuove postille per una nuova edizione curata dopo la sua morte da Marie de Gournay e Pierre de Brach. Le tre edizioni degli Essais 1580 1588 e 1595 rappresentano assai bene lo sviluppo del pensiero e dell'arte di Montaigne. Gli scrittori del Rinascimento avevano prediletto a esercizio del loro sapere certi libri di adagi lezioni paradossi dubb� quesiti ecc.; in quella tradizione si può scorgere l'occasione letteraria degli Essais di M.: i primi vi appartengono ancora derivando dai libri antichi una sentenza e legando pochi aneddoti in una digressione curiosa; via via quella trama facile e pigra si rinsangua di un proposito nuovo che è il ritratto l'immagine dell'uomo. M. conosceva a fondo tutti i grandi scrittori latini i poeti gli storici e i moralisti fra i quali specialmente Seneca; dei greci studiò soprattutto Plutarco. Leggeva nel testo oltre a Petrarca gli scrittori italiani del suo tempo Machiavelli e Guicciardini Ariosto e Tasso. Delle sue varie letture e cognizioni si valeva come di uno stimolo o di un pretesto per avviare le sue riflessioni manifestando una penetrazione luminosa e sicura oltre a un'incessante curiosità di tutte le espressioni dell'animo umano una costante facoltà di dominio e di comprensione di calma spirituale e di indipendenza; l'arte degli Essais segnerà la via ai grandi moralisti e in genere ai grandi prosatori francesi. n L'opera di M. può rappresentare l'esito scettico della cultura rinascimentale un momento estremamente significativo della crisi della coscienza europea: nei suoi Essais estremamente sensibili ai grandi eventi della storia recente l'insegnamento dello scetticismo antico fornisce armi alla polemica di M. contro ogni presunzione della ragione contro il dogmatismo contro la pretesa di asserire come universalmente valide scale di valori che in realtà erano legate a condizioni storiche determinate. Confluiva con la lezione scettica l'esperienza diretta dei profondi mutamenti verificatisi nell'ambiente culturale europeo la scoperta del Nuovo mondo la crisi dell'unità cristiana ecc. Famose le pagine nelle quali innanzi a costumi delle popolazioni del Nuovo mondo così difformi da quelli europei M. rileva la relatività del concetto stesso di barbarie che è sempre in rapporto ai nostri costumi assunti come parametro di giudiz� assoluti. La posizione scettica svolta anche con l'assiduo paragone tra uomo e animale al fine di estinguere tra i due ordini ogni differenza radicale si congiunge in M. a un cauto fideismo in quanto Dio solo è riconosciuto capace di indicare all'uomo la verità.
