This book presents the first comprehensive treatment of these systematic connections: analogy, focality, and cumulation.</p><p>Wilson appeals to these systematic connections in order to reconcile Aristotle's narrow theory of the subject-genus (described in the Posterior Analytics in terms of essential definitional connections among terms) with the more expansive conception found in Aristotle's scientific practice. These connections, all variations on the notion of abstraction, allow for the more expansive subject-genus, and in turn are based on concepts fundamental to the Posterior Analytics. Wilson thus treats the connections in their relation to Aristotle's theory of science and shows how they arise from his doctrine of abstraction. The effect of the argument is to place the connections, which are traditionally viewed as marginal, at the centre of Aristotle's theory of science.</p><p>The scholarly work of the last decade has argued that the Posterior Analytics is essential for an understanding of Aristotle's scientific practice. ‎Insgesamt sehr gut und sauber. - Da Historiker nun einmal dazu neigen, das, was sie in ihrer jeweiligen Gegenwart bewegt, in ihre Erforschung der Vergangenheit einzubeziehen, ist es kein Wunder, wenn in einer Situation, in der die Diskussion über Erkenntnismöglichkeiten und Erkenntniswert der Geschichtswissenschaft erneut ein geradezu unübersehbares Ausmaß angenommen hat, der Althistoriker sich danach umsieht, welcher Rang und welche Erkenntnisfunktion seiner «Wissenschaft» in der Antike eingeräumt worden ist ? falls es sie damals als solche gegeben hat. Im Bereich der Altertumswissenschaft ist die Historiographie lange Zeit von den Historikern wohl vordringlich zur Klärung quellenkritischer Fragen betrieben, im übrigen aber den Klassischen Philologen und deren andersartigen Erkenntnisinteressen überlassen worden. Wenn sich nun auch in immer stärkerem Maße Althistoriker selbst diesem Thema zuwenden, so ist das sicher Ausdruck für die allgemeine «Krise des Geschichtsbewußtseins»: der Wert der Historie wird nicht mehr fraglos vorausgesetzt, sondern selbst zum Gegenstand der Forschung. Die besten Arbeiten, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten auf diesem Gebiet geleistet worden sind, beweisen, daß eine derartige Ausgangslage für die wissenschaftliche Erkenntnis sehr fruchtbar sein kann. Es wird nun höchste Zeit, von Grund auf noch einmal nachzuprüfen, ob das antike Vokabular und gewisse der Antike zugeschriebene geschichtliche Denkschemata, mit denen die allgemeine Diskussion als scheinbar feststehenden Größen operiert, überhaupt schon richtig verstanden sind. Als einen Beitrag im Rahmen dieser Fragestellung versteht sich auch die vorliegende Untersuchung. Das Interesse des Historikers steht also durchaus im Vordergrund, auch wenn hier nicht mehr ein antiker «Kollege», sondern ein Philosoph auf seine «Geschichtsvorstellung» hin befragt wird. Aristoteles bietet sich deshalb so besonders als Untersuchungsobjekt in diesem Zusammenhang an, weil er einerseits wegen seiner «Politik» und der «Athenischen Verfassung», die ihm bereits in der Antike ? aber vielleicht trotzdem zu Unrecht ? zugeschrieben wurde, heute vielfach als der «Historiker» unter den antiken Philosophen ? und insofern «vom Fach» ? betrachtet wird und weil er sich andererseits über den Wert von «Historia» im Vergleich zur Poetik geäußert hat.
