"L’Abrégé publié par Bosset à Londres en 1720 est la traduction d'un 'Abridgment' fait par John Wynne à Oxford en 1695. GRAVESANDE (Willem Jacob's)

In-8, plein veau marbré de l'époque, dos lisse orné de compartiments fleuronnés et cloisonnés, pièces de titre de maroquin bordeaux, tranches rouges, (8), 472 p., vignette gravée en bandeau. Nouvelle édition, dans la traduction d’Élie de Joncourt, proche collaborateur et éditeur de Newton. Continuateur de Locke, Gravesande réinterprète le sensualisme de son maître. Ses positions, en particulier sur la question du libre arbitre, le firent accuser de spinozisme, accusation alors dangereuse, qui lui valut la défense et les éloges et de Voltaire, Voltaire qui s’était rendu Leyde pour assister à ses cours en 1737. L’ouvrage est cité, par ailleurs, pour la théorie du chiffrement et de la cryptographie : Gravesande expose sa méthode révolutionnaire de codage et de décodage basée sur sa philosophie du langage ("De l’art de déchiffrer des Lettres", p. 391-408). Physicien, philosophe, juriste et diplomate néerlandais, illustre professeur à Leyde, Willem Jacob ‘s Gravesande (1688-1742) joua un rôle majeur dans la diffusion des théories de Newton et de la méthode expérimentale. In-4 (243 x 201 mm), demi-veau fauve de l'époque à petits coins, dos à 5 nerfs surlignés de filets gras dorés, pièce de titre de veau blond, tranches mouchetées, (4), xvi, (2), 540 p., (16) p. d'index et colophon, (1) f. d'errata, titre rouge et noir, grande vignette de titre emblématique gravée par O. de Fries. Première édition collective des oeuvres de Leibniz. Elle contient l'édition originale de 'Nouveaux essais sur l'entendement humain' qui occupe la majeure partie du volume (p 1-496), avec la 'Théodicée' l’un des deux seuls ouvrages majeurs que Leibniz parvint à compléter. Composé en 1703 pour n’être publié qu’en 1765 dans ce recueil, l’ouvrage se présente comme une réfutation systématique de 'l'Essai sur l'entendement humain' de John Locke sous forme d’un dialogue imaginaire entre deux personnages: Philalète qui défend la position empiriste empruntée à Locke et Théophile qui soutient l'option rationaliste à l’aide des arguments forgés par Leibniz. Commentant son Essai, Leibniz déclara: "j’ai fort médité moi-même sur ce qui regarde les fondements de nos connaissances (…). De toutes les recherches il n’y a point de plus importante, puisque c’est la clef de toutes les autres". L’édition a été publiée sur les manuscrits originaux par l’érudit allemand Rudolf Erich Raspe et préfacée par Abraham Gotthelf Kaestner, mathématicien, professeur à l'université de Göttingen. In 8° (22,5×14,5 cm) ; 122 pp. Brossura azzurra coeva. Prima ed unica rara edizione di questo scritto di Pietro Cavedoni, fratello di Celestino, (29 nov. 1792-7 marzo 1862) che fu "ordinato sacerdote il 20 maggio 1815 e, dal 1º sett. 1832, arciprete maggiore della metropolitana modenese, è soprattutto da ricordare come biografo di Pio VI.". Altre a quest'opera pubblicò diversi altri volumi a carattere storico e biografico come quelli dedicati a Luigi d'Anghien o quello a Maria Clotilde di Borbone. Non mancò di scrivere anche diversi trattati di storia dell'arte sacra ed in particolare dedicati al duomo di Modena. In questo scritto si inserisce all'interno del dibattito scientifico e fisiologico che all'inizio dell'ottocento vide contrapposti diverse personalità del tempo. In particolare il dibattito fisiologico-filosofico che vide coinvolti fra gli altri Bufalini e Fabbrini, si concentrò sulla presenza ed il tipo di forze vitali che muovono l'uomo tra un alternarsi tra teorie browniane e quelle "dinamiche". Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) è uno di quei pochi pensatori che dividono il tempo con la loro filosofia, tanto che dopo di lui si può parlare soltanto di una filosofia post-kantiana, anche qualora si trattasse di un pensiero anti-kantiano. E in particolare la "Critica della ragion pura" è una di quelle opere senza le quali non solo non capiremmo l'intera vicenda della filosofia moderna, ma mancheremmo di una chiave decisiva per introdurci alla problematica e al lessico del dibattito filosofico dall'Ottocento fino ai nostri giorni. In quest'opera Kant afferma che l'unica metafisica possibile è quella dell'esperienza, e che a sua volta l'esperienza è guidata dalle forme rigorosamente "a priori" dell'intelletto, cioè di un puro "io" pensante.

INTERNI IN OTTIMO STATO Se la fisica e l'astronomia newtoniana poterono nell'universale accettazione divenire anche strumento di apologetica, altrimenti avvenne per la storia naturale della terra e del genere umano: ipotesi geologiche e problematiche antropologiche troppo erano in antitesi con la verità del Genesi. Creazionismo o determinismo meccanicistico, catastrofismo o staticità della natura, disordine o equilibrio non erano false alternative per gli uomini del Seicento. Archetipo della letteratura cosmogonica è la Telluris Theoria Sacra ( 1681) di Thomas Burnet (1635-1715), che nei termini della storia sacra, Eden, Diluvio, Conflagrazione, definisce le epoche di una storia della terra, più radicalmente alternativa al Genesi che non la fabula cartesiana de Il Mondo o le ipotesi di Newton. Tradizione mitica e tradizione scritturale vi sono reinterpretate nei termini della fisica corpuscolare e sottoposte all'attento vaglio della ragione. Rileggendo ora le opere di Thomas Burnet si aprono nuovi spiragli sui modi della « scoperta del tempo » nella storia del mondo e dell'umanità. Vengono in luce connessioni profonde tra sapere ermetico e ricerca empirica, tra componente -mitica e moderne teorie della materia, tra polemiche teologiche e problematiche scientifiche. Si delinea una figura estremamente complessa di scrittore scientifico e polemista, di teologo, filosofo morale e archeologo delle civiltà che ben può rappresentare, anche nelle contraddizioni e nelle aporie, i termini della crisi della coscienza europea, verso la ricostruzione di un modello diverso di sapere. Un'operazione nella quale l'erudita e immaginifica opera burnetiana ebbe non poco peso per la trasformazione dei paradigmi scientifici e del moderno senso comune. Ernesto Mayz Vallenilla Saltar a: navegación, búsqueda Ernesto Mayz Vallenilla (Maracaibo, 3 de septiembre de 1925) es un filósofo venezolano. Estudió bachillerato en el Liceo de Aplicación, el Liceo Fermín Toro y se graduó de bachiller en el Liceo Andrés Bello, todos ellos en la ciudad de Caracas. Se graduó en filosofía y literatura en la Universidad Central de Venezuela en la Primera Promoción de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras en el año 1950 donde obtuvo luego su doctorado en Filosofía. Estudió en las Universidades de Göttingen, Friburgo y Múnich, llegando a ser alumno de Martin Heidegger. Fue profesor de la Universidad Central de Venezuela y rector fundador de la Universidad Simón Bolivar. De esta última casa de estudios, Ernesto Mayz Vallenilla es el autor de la letra de su himno (Canción del Nuevo Mundo), con música de Alberto Grau. Son notables sus teorías sobre la razón técnica que se muestran en su libro Esbozo de una crítica de la razón técnica de 1974.1 En 2001 la Sociedad Argentina de Filosofía consideró a Mayz Vallenilla como el más destacado filosofo Latinoamericano del siglo veinte. L’opera raccoglie per la prima volta, in due ampi volumi, tutti gli scritti giornalistici (oltre 300) dati alle stampe da Cuoco nel corso della sua intensa attività pubblicistica (1801-1815). Il primo volume, a cura e con introduzione di Maurizio Martirano, riunisce gli articoli del periodo milanese (1801-1806), pubblicati nel «Redattore Cisalpino» e nel «Giornale Italiano»; il secondo, curato e introdotto da Domenico Conte, raccoglie quelli del periodo napoletano (1806-1815), apparsi nel «Corriere di Napoli» e nel «Monitore delle Due Sicilie».
