First Edition First Issue with with slightly skewed woodcut ornament on title catchword I my on A2v and misprint Patronnge on A3v Yolton reversing priority given in Wing. Lockes treatise grew out of a correspondence dating from 1684 between himself and his friend Edward Clarke whom he was advising on the education of his son. Locke was in Holland at the time. "His thought was marked by a ready understanding of and sympathy with children. Three main thoughts dominate the work. First the individual aptitudes capacities and idiosyncrasies of the child should govern learning not arbitrary curricular or rote learning taught by the rod. Second Locke placed the health of the body and the development of a sound character ahead of intellectual learning. In the third place he saw that play high spirits and the "gamesome humor" natural to children should govern the business of learning wherever possible. Compulsory learning is irksome; where there is play in learning there is also joy in it. Throughout he placed emphasis on good example practice and use rather than on precepts rules and punishment. The work was an implicit criticism of his own education at Westminster and Oxford which he found unpleasant and largely useless." James Gordon Clapp Encyc. of Philosophy p. 500 Wing 2762A. Yolton 165. Christophersen p. 57. Pforzheimer 612. 1st Edition. London: Printed for A. and J.Churchill, 1693. unknown

A Letter to the Right Reverend Edward Ld Bishop of Worcester Concerning some Passages relating to Mr. Locke's Essay of Humane Understanding: in a late Discourse of his Lordships in Vindication of the Trinity
London: Printed by H. Clark for A. and J. Churchill…and Edw. Castle 1697 First editions. Contemporary panelled calf rebacked to style. . Octavo. ———. Mr. Locke's Reply to the Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of Worcester's Answer to his Letter Concerning some Passages Relating to Mr. Locke's Essay of Humane Understanding: in a Late Discourse of his Lordships in Vindication of the Trinity. London: Printed by H. Clark for A. and J. Churchill…1697. Octavo. 4 173 1 blank 6 pp. Endpapers browned ink signature dated 1730. Overall in very good condition complete with both half-titles. The first work grew out of Stillingfleet's attack on Locke in his Discourse in Vindication of the Doctrine of the Trinity 1696. Locke had suggested that as John Yolton puts it "immateriality was not necessary for immortality" and distinguished matter from particular instances of matter. There are a number of states and issues of this work of little consequence to anyone but the bibliographer. This copy is of the second issue with the title-page a cancel because Locke had not properly addressed the bishop with his courtesy title in the first issue. It is of the third state of the second issue with the spellings "Pater-Noster-Row" and "Whitehall" in the imprint. Stillingfleet replied to the above publication prompting Locke to publish the second work. A final reply to Stillingfleet appeared in 1699. Printed by H. Clark, for A. and J. Churchill…and Edw. Castle, unknown

LOCKE John.
Abregé de l'essay de Monsieur Locke sur l'entendement humain

Uppsala: Veuve du directeur Jean Edman 1792. Rare French edition printed in Uppsala of the abridgement of the Essay on Human Understanding by John Wynne the format in which Locke’s thought was most effectively popularized at English universities and in Europe. “In the last decade of the seventeenth century English culture held a frustrated fascination for the continental Republic of Letters. Frustrated because few Europeans could approach English ideas in the English language. Gabriel Bonno1 has shown how Locke’s continental readers were dependent initially upon reviews in French-language journals – Basnage de Beauval’s Histoire des ouvrages des savans Bernard’s Nouvelles de la république des lettres and particularly Le Clerc’s Bibliothèque universelle and its successors. Interested parties such as Limborch and Leibniz did not really come to grips with the Essay until it had been translated into French. This was accomplished in 1700 by Pierre Coste.Coste was like Le Clerc a French Protestant refugee in Holland. In 1695 he translated Locke’s Some thoughts concerning education into French and sent the author a copy. Locke was pleased and Le Clerc encouraged the young man to begin translating the Essay. In 1697 Coste was invited to Locke’s retreat at Oates as tutor to the Masham children and as Locke’s assistant. The translation was completed under Locke’s supervision and was published in June 1700 prefaced with Locke’s recommendation. Coste remained at Oates until Locke’s death in 1704. Thereafter in the midst of a busy literary career he continued his work on the Essay bringing out a revised edition in 1729.” AttigThe first French edition of Wynne’s abridged Essay came out in 1720 translated by Jean-Paul Bosset and with the first book given in Le Clerk’s summary reprinted from his 1690 Bibliotèque universelle rather than Wynne’s. It was published several times in London 1720 1741 1746 1751 as well as Geneva 1738 1741 1788 Dresden 1788 and finally Uppsala 1792.OCLC: Harvard UCLA York.Hollis record. 8vo 17 x 11 x pp. including title with half-page engraved portrait of Locke 284 4 pp. Bound in contemporary half calf and speckled boards gilt morocco title label and raised bands on spine spine and corners of covers worn old ownership inscription on front end pastedown light toning throughout very good.
Veuve du directeur Jean Edman hardcover
