‎Robert Ellis Miller director; Carson McCullers novel; Thomas C. Ryan screenwriter; Alan Arkin Sondra Locke Laurinda Barrett S‎

‎The Heart is a Lonely Hunter Original screenplay for the 1968 film‎

‎N.p.: The Landau Company 1963. Draft script for the 1968 film. <br/><br/>As early as 1950 there was talk of adapting Carson McCullers' 1940 debut novel "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" for the screen. In 1963 producer David Susskind took over Jose Quintero's attempt at adapting the novel which began two years earlier with a script from British screenwriter Gavin Lambert. Susskind passed on Lambert's script opting for a script from Thomas C. Ryan.<br/><br/>Susskind planned to shoot the film in New York City with director Sidney Lumet but the project ended up being held up indefinitely. Four years later Marc Merson's Brownstone Productions had taken over the film rights with Thomas C. Ryan's original 1963 script and with Ryan co-producing. During filming Ryan and director Robert Ellis Miller would make extensive re-writes as they went.<br/><br/>One of the great film adaptations of any American novel starring Sondra Locke in her debut film opposite Alan Arkin. Although much of the political aspect of McCullers' novel was removed from the film the themes present in the author's work are readily apparent: race loneliness impoverishment and anger. Arkin and Locke were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress Oscars. <br/><br/>Set in in a small Southern town shot on location in Selma Alabama.<br/><br/>Red titled vinyl Hart Stenographic Bureau wrappers. Title page present dated 8/26/63 with credits for novelist Carson McCullers and screenwriter Thomas C. Ryan. 130 leaves with last page of text numbered 127. Mimeographed rectos only with pink revision pages throughout dated 8/26/63. Pages Very Good plus wrapper Very Good plus bound with two metal screw brads. The Landau Company unknown books‎

‎THE MOON HOAX; OR A DISCOVERY THAT THE MOON HAS A VAST POPULATION OF HUMAN BEINGS.‎

‎Boston: Gregg Press 1975. Octavo cloth. New edition. Reprint of the 1859 William Gowans edition. New 30-page historical introduction by Ormond Seavey. Edgar Allan Poe's comment on the Moon Hoax is appended. A reprint of Locke's successful hoax perpetrated in the New York Sun in August 1835 that pretended to reveal a discovery that men and animals existed on the moon. The revelations supposedly reprinted from the actually defunct Edinburgh Journal of Science pretended to reveal a discovery that men and animals existed on the moon and were so cleverly wrought that for a short time the report was given credence in scientific circles in the United States and Europe. The report was soon denounced as a hoax by the public press and Richard Adams Locke 1800-1871 a reporter for the Sun was identified as the perpetrator of the "ingenious astronomical hoax." Interest in the lunar discoveries increased the Sun's circulation to more than nineteen thousand the largest of any daily of that time. According to William Gowans who reprinted the story in 1859 Locke's account created such public interest that the owners of the Sun published sixty thousand copies of it in pamphlet form. The pamphlet was published in September 1835 and every copy was sold in less than a month. Nevertheless the 1835 printings are rare and only a handful of copies survive. Anatomy of Wonder 1981 1-137. ‎LOCKE Edwin‎

‎Typed Letter Signed. 2pp to Ben Shahn dated 31 July 1967‎

‎Camp LaGuardia NY 1967. Original 2pp typed letter on two sides of a sheet of hotel letterhead dated 31 July 1967. Addressed: Dear Ben Shahn signed in ink "Ed Locke." Three old folds else fine. A warm and personal letter from Shahn's old friend and fellow FSA photographer including and commenting on two poems Locke has written: ".a bit of formal verse has crowded into my mind four-square.I'd not send you these trivia except as evidence that my heart is beating in some fashion.I'm inflicting the verses upon you not just because you encouraged me but because they are a sort of safety-valve. What an ancient square I am! I slip into a villanelle as though it were my own coat. Do you ever doodle with your brush" <br/><br/>Though his talents lay more in the realm of writing and editing than photography Edwin Locke worked for three years as Roy Stryker's main assistant at the FSA where in addition to editorial tasks he participated in a number of documentary photo shoots including an important collaboration with Walker Evans to document victims of the 1937 Arkansas Flood. His association with Shahn would have dated from this period as Shahn and Stryker were extremely close colleagues in Washington first in the Special Skills section of the Resettlement Administration and later in the art section of the FSA. unknown books‎

First edition. A short fantastic allegory about the gift of life. Overworked successful but spiritually dead English barrister wins a bet with an itinerant musician and awakes in France as a vital younger man with a caravan and peddler's license. After several days spent analyzing his past life "the dawn found him with the shinning eyes of one awakened to Life's promise jogging southward on an irrevocable way never in this life to retrace his steps." Typical of Locke's gay romanticism; his favorite fictional type was the vagabond who is the despair of dull and pompous people. This story was collected in STORIES NEAR AND FAR 1927. Bleiler 1978 p. 125. Not in Reginald 1979; 1992. ‎An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding in Four Books. The Third Edition.‎

‎London:: Awnsham and John Churchill and Samuel Manship 1695. 1695. Third edition. Folio. a2 b6 a-c4 B-3F4 3G-3I2. Pagination: 40 407 1 12 pp. Frontispiece engraved portrait of Locke by Sylvester Brounower and P. Vanderbanck; faint dampstain or rippling to bottom margin. Modern blue cloth over marbled boards red morocco title-label I1 large tear repaired old owner’s inscription penned over on top of title page J.B.S. Very good. THIRD EDITION; first printed in 1689. Jean Yolton notes that N. Petter Nidditch estimates this edition to be printed in 800 copies. John Locke 1632-1704 philosopher and fellow of the Royal Society was the secretary and close associate of Ashby the first Earl of Shaftsbury and Lord Chancellor. This "Essay" established him as the leading philosopher of his day and together with letters upon religious toleration provided the basis for Whig political thought for the next century and paved the way for the later philosophies of Bentham and the radicals. // Considered the father of English empiricism Locke "was the first to take up the challenge of Bacon and to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe. In the past similar enquiries had been vitiated by the human propensity to extend them beyond the range of human understanding and to invent causes for what it cannot explain. Therefore Locke’s first task was to ascertain ‘the original certainty and extent of human knowledge’ and excluding ‘the physical consideration of the mind to show how far it can comprehend the universe’. His conclusion is that though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension it can at least be ‘sufficient’; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance and to some extent control our own destiny." - Printing of the Mind of Man. 164. ‎LOCKE John.‎

‎Some Thoughts Concerning Education.‎

‎London:: Awnsham & John Churchill 1693. 1693. Small octavo. Collation: A4 B-R8 S4. Pagination: viii 262 2 pp. Modern antique-style spotted paneled calf red morocco spine label edges speckled red old endpapers preserved; some marginal worming G3-N8 with occasional effect to printed text but confined to lower margin some abrasion to fore-edge. Otherwise a fine copy. First Edition "corrected" issue. There has been much discussion of the "states" of the first edition. This copy has the square ornament on the title-page the rules are 13mm below the type and ‘patronage’ on A3v line 19. In addition this copy has the catchword "I" found on A2v indicative of a first printing and not the reprint wherein one finds the catchword altered to "I my". "Locke was known to be concerned at the quality of the printing of his writings and to try to read the sheets before they were finally printed . . . I think the Churchills completed printing the first edition before Locke had made corrections; that he was so incensed by the errors that he insisted the whole first edition be suppressed and the barely distinguishable second edition be made." - Yolton. This copy has most of the corrections but lacks a few at the front of the volume and apparently is made up of some mixed sheets from the first printing. // It quickly became one of his most popular and influential works and is more or less a direct application of Locke’s empiricism as expressed in his Essay Concerning Human Understanding. // From the beginning Some Thoughts Concerning Education was initiated in 1684 with a correspondence with Locke’s friend Edward Clarke. The letters offered to Clarke advice for raising his son and heir. But it was not until William Molyneux encouraged Locke in 1693 to publish this book based on the advice given and even then issuing the first edition without his name on the title. // This work is a cornerstone in educational theory and is further considered a foundation of the principles of modern developmental psychology. "His thought was marked by a ready understanding of and warm sympathy with children. Three main thoughts dominate the work. First the individual aptitudes capacities and idiosyncrasies of the child should govern learning not arbitrary curricular or rote learning taught by the rod. Second Locke placed the health of the body and the development of a sound character ahead of intellectual learning. In the third place he saw that play high spirits and the ‘gamesome humor’ natural to children should govern the business of learning wherever possible. . . His influence on educational thought was enormous and is still very much with us in its fundamental outlook and method." - Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Two Treatises of Government: In the Former The False Principles and Foundation of Sir Robert Filmer and His Followers are Detected and Overthrown. The Latter is an Essay Concerning the True Original Extent and End of Civil Government. Originally published: London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill 1698. 6 358 pp. Reprinted 2010 by The Lawbook Exchange Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781616190347; ISBN-10: 1616190345. Paperback. New. $14.95 Reprint of the third edition. Published after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 brought William of Orange and Mary to the throne but written in the throes of the Whig revolutionary plots against Charles II in the early 1680s John Locke offers a theory of natural law and natural rights which distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate civil governments and argues for the legitimacy of revolt against tyrannical governments. These radical ideas remain influential today. In these two treatises the political philosopher John Locke espouses radical theories which influenced the ideologies of the American and French revolutions and became the basis for the social and political philosophies of Rousseau Voltaire and the United States founding fathers. In the first treatise Locke aims to refute the doctrine of the patriarchal and absolute right of the Divine Right of Kings doctrine put forth by Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha. He examines key Biblical passages to prove that scripture does not support Filmer's premise. The second treatise offers Locke's positive theory of government in which he establishes a theory which reconciles the liberty of the citizen with political order. His basic premise is founded on the independence of the individual. He declares that men are born free and equal in their rights and that wealth is the product of labor. In his revolutionary theory of the social contract he proposes that a legitimate civil government must preserve the rights to life liberty health and property of its citizens and prosecute and punish those in violation of those rights. JOHN LOCKE 1632-1704 a leading philosopher of the Enlightenment is widely considered to be the father of liberalism. ‎The Drunkard's Looking Glass. Reflecting a Faithful Likeness of the Drunkard in Sundry very interesting Attitudes.‎

‎Philadephia: For the author 1818. Pamphlet octavo 63 pages. Sixth improved edition and the first illustrated edition. With an engraved frontispiece possibly by William Charles depicting a drunken rider felled by a low hanging branch. With thirteen woodcuts in the text by William Mason. The rare wrapper here with the front panel present only contains yet another woodcut likely also by Mason. A temperance tract by the famous Parson Weems inventor of the George Washington cherry tree incident. A series of well written cautionary tales often quite humorous. "As the wan countenance of the lust-worn harlot becomes still more dark and dismal at the sight of a young female fresh and blushing in all the charms of virgin innocence so does the soul of a filthy drunkard experience a quickened hell at the site of a gentleman well drest and breathing the cheerful air of cleanliness and sobriety." The pamphlet is worn with a small one-eighth inch hole in the engraved frontispiece and one page torn through the text due to a careless page separation. The illustrated wrapper panel is worn but the text and illustrations are unscathed. In all a decent survival. Shaw & Shoemaker 46749 MWA PPL; Hamilton 1019; Sabin 102467; American Imprints 46751. Overall a very good copy. ìLockeís concern for the toleration of religious dissent for the interaction of individual conscience and public authority was long-standing. In his early tracts on the civil magistrate.he had felt that the need for order in society justified the authority of the magistrate over matters indifferent to salvation. Under the influence of Shaftesbury and of his own investigations of the scope of certain knowledge his emphasis changed. Without certainty in matters of religion the conscience must be allowed liberty; the authority of the magistrate must be confined to preserving the existence of society and the safety and property of the citizen. Lockeís thoughts on this subject as on so many others matured during his stay in Holland where his circle of friends consisted primarily of dissenters from the established church such as the Remonstrant pastor and theologian Philippus van Limborch. In 1686 Locke drafted a letter in Latin to his friend which was published probably by Limborch in 1689î Attig p. 12. The Epistola de tolerantia was almost immediately translated into English and published in London. It was ìimmediately attacked in two anonymous pamphlets the most significant of which was Proastís Argument March 1690. Lockeís own response was equally swift and his Second letter appeared in June. Proast replied to Lockeís Second letter with his Third letter concerning toleration 1691. Locke in response published A third letter for toleration the following year. Proast did not return to the attack until 1704 when he published his Second letter to the author of the three letters for toleration. Locke was defended by an anonymous author probably John Shute Barrington in the postscript to The rights of the Protestant dissenters. At the time of his death that same year Locke had begun his own reply. The draft was published by his executors Peter King and Anthony Collins in 1706î Attig pp. 18-19. Attig 93. Rothschild 2733.
