LOCKE John 1632 1704
Essai Philosophique Concernant LEntendement Humain. Par M. Locke. Traduit de lAnglois par M. Coste. Quatrime Edition revue corrige & augmente de quelques Additions importantes de lAuteur qui nont paru quaprs sa mort. Essay Concerning .
Amsterdam: Chez Pierre Mortier 1742. Pp. xlii 603 19. Engraved frontis portrait of Locke by E. Morellon la Cave after G. Kneller Eques. Title in red and black with engraved printers device engraved headpiece woodcut ornaments and initials. Contemporary mottled calf spine gilt in compartments to a thistle motif between raised bands marbled endpapers red stained edges. Binding worn at extremities corners exposed upper and lower portions of front joint split but cover holding firmly new label. Outer margin of frontis portrait repaired not affecting image several scratched out signatures in margins of title contents leaf bound-in slightly askew with outer edges a little frayed but otherwise a good clean copy in a still-serviceable binding. The Fourth Edition of Costes celebrated French translation of Lockes Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. Pierre Coste 1668-1747 a French Protestant cleric who took refuge in Holland around 1690 brought out a French translation of Lockes Thoughts Concerning Education in 1695. The work sufficiently impressed the author that while Coste was visiting England in 1697 Locke invited him to translate his Essay. The translation of the Essay was done under Lockes close supervision and was published in June 1700 with a commendatory note by the author. When Locke died in 1704 Coste wrote a eulogy of him which was published in Bayles Rpublique des Lettres in 1705 and later reprinted in the second edition of his translation of the Essay 1729 and is included in the present edition. Besides the works of Locke Coste was also responsible for translating the writings of Lord Shaftesbury and Isaac Newton Optics. He also produced a highly acclaimed edition of Montaignes Essays 1724 as well as some original literary works including a life of Cond; but he is best remembered for his translations which were instrumental in introducing English thought to the French philosophers of the eighteenth century. LOCKE John 1632 1704
Posthumous Works of Mr. John Locke: viz I. Of the Conduct of the Understanding. II. An Examination of P. Malebranche's Opinion of Seeing all things in God. III. A Discourse of Miracles. IV. Part of a Fourth Letter for Toleration.
Cambridge: At the University Press 1968. Pp. 2 p.l. 336. Bound in 19th century half calf over marbled boards double gilt-ruled smooth spine endpapers renewed. Minor rubbing to extremities otherwise an excellent copy. The First Edition. A collection of Locke's most important unpublished works gathered together by his literary executors Anthony Collins and Sir Peter King after his death in 1704. The "Conduct of the Understanding" originally intended to form a chapter of Locke's "Essay" was first published separately in 1754 and became one of his most popular works. Locke had refrained from publishing his scathing "Examination of P. Malebranche's Opinion" in his lifetime believing that his ideas would soon crumble under the weight of their own contradictions. The "Discourse of Miracles" was written in response to Fleetwood's essay on the subject. The unfinished "Fourth Letter for Toleration" was his final contribution to the controversy with Jonas Proast the Chaplain of All Souls Oxford. The last essay in this collection originally written in French and published in Le Clerc's "Bibliothque Universelle et Historique" in 1686 was in fact the first of Locke's works to be published. Yolton 299. Pforzheimer 609. NCBEL II 1835. . Reprint of Second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Octavo. At the University Press Hardcover

LOCKE John 1632 1704
An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. In Four Books. The Third Edition
London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill. and Samuel Manship 1695. Pp. 20 p.l. 407 1 blank 11 index 1 ads. Engraved frontis portrait by P. Vanderbanck after Sylvester Brounower. Contemporary mottled calf panelled in the Cambridge style with raised bands and gilt label. Binding a bit rubbed and pitted front joint partially split but still holding firmly minor repair to headcap endpapers a little soiled old signature on title closed tears to margins of G2 and I2 just touching letterpress but not affecting legibility; but generally a clean crisp copy in a still presentable binding with the engraved bookplate of Gregory Elsley. The Third Edition of the Essay being a line-by-line reprint of the second edition incorporating the errata. Locke's Essay Concerning Humane Understanding first published in 1690 was the first modern attempt to critically examine the nature and scope of human reason. The stated purpose was "to enquire into the original certainty and extent of human knowledge together with the grounds and degrees of belief opinion and assent." Reflecting the scientific temper of the times Locke sought to establish an empirical basis for all knowledge to show that "all knowledge is founded on and ultimately derives from sense. or sensation." Against the Platonic notion of 'innate ideas' Locke argues that the mind is a 'tabula rasa' with all our ideas coming from experience that is sensation and reflection a kind of internal sense perception. Pure reality can never be grasped directly by the mind without the intervention of ideas but despite the representative quality of our knowledge our ideas give us an adequate picture of the world with a fidelity "as great as our condition needs". The importance and influence of Locke's Essay on subsequent thinkers can hardly be exaggerated. It was the first and probably the most important statement of the empiricist theory of knowledge in the British tradition leading from Locke to Berkeley to Hume which when combined with the Cartesian rationalism of the Continent culminated in the critical philosophy of Kant.
