Headed Eton College Windsor 10 Sept. 1927. Four neatly written pages 4to very good condition. SEE photograph for full text. Hope-Jones see brief biography below including his appearance in an M.R. James ghost story writes a very substantial letter on the character activities school influence etc. of Douglas Byng-Stamper whose death evoked an Agatha Christie style mystery. See Google "Death on an Oban-bound Train" for a comprehensive article on the incident. William Hope-Jones evokes references on Google such as in court for bathing "without sufficient dress" or the following AI spiel: "William Hope-Jones known as "Hojo" at Eton was a math teacher and housemaster at Eton College noted for his eccentricity. He was a King's Scholar 1900-1906 Assistant Master 1907-1950 and Housemaster 1924-1939. Hope-Jones is also remembered for his loud singing and for writing the humorous song "National Anthem of the Ancient Britons" also known as "Woad" or "The Woad Ode" according to Wikipedia. likely New York: Philip Winsor 1954. Paperback. Very Good. Staple-bound wraps; 12mo; pp. 77 with full-page b/w illustrations. Covers lightly rubbed and dust-smudged; some ight wrinkling to fore-edge of text block. A mysterious volume -- no other copies found in the marketplace or on OCLC and very little to be gleaned about either Pat or Philip Winsor. Morte Garchik is almost certainly Morton Garchik 1929-2009 an American painter illustrator and woodcut artist who also wrote two important books on art instruction. This volume is a tribute to or remembrance of the author's wife Leah who was somehow involved with the World Federalist Movement in the early days of the U.N. and who later made a successful run for Congress -- tho little is found for either Leah Hissling a name mentioned in the text perhaps her maiden name or Leah Winsor. The author alludes to being a photographer and a familiar of painters Caroline who perhaps suffered from Dementia Praecox and later drowned and Abel who kills himself after the Korean War and whose works are said to be in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The author never gives surnames and -- if we're correct that Morte Garchik is actually Morton Garchik -- may not be relied upon to recall them with complete accuracy. The result is an impressionistic atmospheric account of New York politics art and a marriage in the 1950s. Nicely if simply written and produced and begging further study. <br/><br/> Philip Winsor paperback
