ill., br. L'idea della mostra "Siamo del gatto! Storie e immagini di gatti" è nata da un progetto di comunicazione scientifica su alcuni temi di genetica promosso dal Museo di Storia naturale dell'Università di Pisa e supportato dalla Regione Toscana. Partendo dalle opere delle proprie raccolte e con il generoso contributo di collezionisti privati, il Museo della Grafica ha voluto condividere lo spirito e le finalità del progetto allestendo nelle sale di Palazzo Lanfranchi un percorso di storie e immagini con cui artisti di diverse epoche hanno raffigurato e raccontato il gatto. Dalle tavole per l'"Histoire naturelle" di Buffon all'immaginario umanizzato proposto dalla fantasia di Grandville, dai gatti birichini disegnati ai primi del '900 dal geniale pisano Spartaco Carlini al "Neko" che gioca con il mouse del computer, prende corpo un'originale galleria di ritratti felini che unisce l'Annunciazione di Federico Barocci alle opere grafiche di Benito Boccolari, Furio de Denaro, Marcello Guasti, Silvio Loffredo, Toti Scialoja, Giorgio Settala e altri autori contemporanei, per concludersi sui frammenti gatteschi raccontati da Antonio Bobò e Antonio Possenti. Sulle rive dell'Arno, il titolo della mostra non poteva che riprendere un modo di dire ampiamente diffuso in Toscana (per ulteriori approfondimenti filologici su questa "felice ben figurata locuzione di uso livornese" ci rimettiamo alla indimenticabile penna del grande Giorgio Marchetti e al suo celebre Il Borzacchini universale). Un modo di dire che allude a situazioni particolarmente difficili, ma che è anche - e soprattutto - ammissione della potenza felina, riferimento al nostro essere complici e vittime dell'irresistibile fascino dell'animale. Perché "siamo del gatto!", nel senso di consapevole resa e sottomissione, non è forse quel pensiero stupendo che ci coglie ogni volta che un gatto entra nella nostra vita e se ne impadronisce? br. Gli ultimi giorni di una persona cara sono difficili da affrontare, per il malato, stremato dal dolore, e per i parenti, stretti attorno a lui, che condividono la sua sofferenza. In quei momenti ci poniamo diversi interrogativi, nell'arduo tentativo di dare un senso alla vita e alla morte. Nel mondo occidentale l'innalzamento dell'età media della vita unito alle acquisizioni scientifiche, mediche e tecnologiche, hanno protratto a lungo l'esistenza, trasformandola a volte in una vita solo biologica, in una presenza assente come per le persone in stato vegetativo permanente o in una sopravvivenza dolorosa. In alcuni casi sembra quasi che più che aiutare la vita si cerchi di impedire la morte. Qual è il confine tra cura e accanimento terapeutico? Si può decidere la propria morte? Come trovare, da credente, una dignità nella morte? In questo libro si analizza il tema del fine vita cercando delle risposte a queste domande dal punto di vista religioso, etico, legale e medico, con interventi di Beppino Englaro, padre di Eluana; dell'avvocato Giulia Facchini Martini, nipote del Cardinal Martini; di Don Pierluigi Di Piazza, fondatore del Centro di accoglienza Ernesto Balducci; di Vito Di Piazza, primario di Medicina Interna all'Ospedale di Tolmezzo (Ud) e di Marinella Chirico, unica giornalista ammessa al capezzale di Eluana alla casa di riposo La Quiete di Udine.

Bath Somerset. 4 April 1769. 1p. 8vo. roughly 27.5 x 18.5 cm. On a piece of watermarked laid paper. The present item is the original handbill reproduced on pp.41-44 of 'The Bath Contest: Being a Collection of all the Papers Advertisements &c. Published Before and Since The Death of Mr. Derrick By the Candidates For the Office of Master of Ceremonies And their Friends Digested in Regular Order' Bath: Archer and Cruttwell 1769. It is scarce: no other copy being traced either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. A frail survival on aged worn and creased paper with loss at head and to left-hand margin. It has lost the top line of the two-line heading consisting of 'To the Ladies and Gentlemen who are yet uninflu-'. The only other part of the text lacking is the number 4 of the day of the month in the bottom left-hand corner leaving 'th April 1769.' The initial paragraph is addressed to 'Ladies and Gentlemen' and this is followed by one addressed to 'Ladies' with the last four paragraphs addressed to 'Gentlemen'. The document begins: 'Ladies and Gentlemen Your Interests are united by the strong Hand of Nature. She hath given to both Sexes those Powers which equally promote each other's Happiness.' It concludes: 'What a Scene for your Sex to appear in Your Absence may shame them into Temper. A Room full of Men! What a ridiculous Sight! What Wretches should we be without You.' 'This volume consists wholly of articles selected from the successive numbers of the American Messenger, to the middle of its thirteenth volume. William Allen Hallock (1794-1880) was the agent for the New England Tract Society (based in Andover, MA) when it changed its name to the American Tract Society in 1823 with the intention of becoming a national organization. The New York Religious Tract Society, considering a similar goal, contacted the New England group in 1824 about a possible merger. Hallock, believing that "the great wicked city of New York" should be its home, was influential in effecting this in 1825. Los Angeles: Stove Pipe Wells Hotel ca. 1935. First edition of this promotional piece of Death Valley tourist literature. Sixteen-panel folded brochure in color. Very bright and clean.The front bears an orange and yellow archetypal image of a prospector and his donkey. When unfolded the brochure has a fine map of Death Valley and the surrounding area and displays the routes into the Valley from Trona Lone Pine and Rhyolite. Beneath the map is a list of eleven tours in Death Valley. In 1925 entrepreneur Bob Eichmann began construction of the hotel at Stovepipe Wells along with a scenic toll road through Death Valley. It was commissioned to be used as an illustration on page 39 of "Some Strange Corners of Our Country: The Wonderland of the Southwest" by Charles F. Lummis. New York: The Century Co. 1898. A copy of the book is included. Ink portrait; 413 x 298 mm; 16 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches board. Signed and titled in ink lower right Century Co. Art Department stamp on verso. Some spotting and light soiling in margins a few spots and artist's erasure marks in lower portion of image. A very vibrant image of this key Death Valley figure. Matted and mylared. Malcolm Fraser's striking portrait of the Rev. James Welsh Brier the leader of one of the first gold rush prospector parties to reach San Francisco who barely survived the journey through the great desert valley which they later named "Death Valley." The mid-westerners had set out 134 days earlier in the autumn of 1849. This disastrous journey was immortalized in William Lewis Manly's Death Valley in '49. In the early 1850s Brier wrote the first printed account of the "Forty-Niners'" trip in the "Christian Advocate" a religious journal published in San Francisco."Charles Malcolm Fraser artist and illustrator whose long and rewarding career afforded association with many of the great names of his time was a native of Montreal Canada. Born April 19 1868. Malcolm Fraser had first come to public attention as an artist when at the age of eighteen he exhibited with the Black and White Club at the Salmagundi Club galleries in New York. The following year he exhibited at the Society of American Artists’ exhibition. He had thus begun his career with substantial work when he set out for Paris to continue his art studies. Hollywood: The Studio of Preston Duncan ca. 1931. Original silver gelatin print of a 1931 Graham-Paige sedan on the salt beds of Death Valley. Most likely for an advertisement. The photograph is 13 1/8 x 10 3/y and mounted to a board measuring 18 x 15 inches. AAt the pase of the board we find the title and the photographer's credit in pencil. Studio stamp on the recto in purple ink. `Excellent tonality and very good overall.Duncan Preston was an early Hollywood photographer active in the late 1920s and early 1930s known for striking portraits of silent and early sound film stars like Myrna Loy and Jean Harlow. The Times often used his star photographs. This photograph is quite unusual for him. Surely it was a photograph destined for inclusion in an advertisement. The Famous Twenty Mule Borax Team from Death Valley California.
New York: Pacific Coast Borax Co. ca. 1925. First edition. Small twelvemo. The title page reads "Concerning Borax Bill and the Famous 20 Mule Borax Team from Death Valley California." 116 pp. including frontispiece of Borax bill. Charmingly illustrated through and with a half-tone of the mule team across two pages. Publisher's brown printed wrappers with highlights in red. Excellent condition. he wagons were among the largest ever pulled by draft animals designed to carry 10 short tons 9 metric tons of borax ore at a time. The rear wheels measured seven feet high with tires made of one-inch-thick iron. The wagon beds measured 16 feet long and were 6 feet deep and were constructed of solid oak. They weighed 7800 pounds empty; when loaded with ore the total weight of the mule train was 73200 pounds. Long after the transportation of the borax was mechanized the company sent. out these 20 mule teams as a sort of advertisement. Promotional team appearances ended with an outing in the January 1 1999 Rose Parade. They have become perhaps the leading symbol of Death Valley. Pacific Coast Borax Co. unknown

New York City: G. B. Perazzo 1918. Billhead invoice dated April 1 1918. 8 1.2 x 14 inches. The billhead has a photograph illustration of the undertaker G. B. Perazzo who was located on Bleecker Street. Filled in in manuscript. One short tear to top and expected fold lines. Very good.An itemized invoice for the burial of Vincenzo Petello. His family James opted for the Lavender Casket for a whopping 70 dollars. The 7 coaches used to convey the mourners to the grave was only 49 dollars."During the heaviest years of Italian immigration to the South Village businesses in the neighborhood were typically operated by and mostly catered to local Italian clientele. The Porto Rico Importing Company established in 1907 by the Longo family has had several South Village homes over its more than 100 year history including 194 Bleecker Street and its present location at 201 Bleecker Street. The funeral business begun by Giovanni Bautista Perazzo in the building he constructed at 199 sic Bleecker Street in 1924-25 sic also endures today. Many Italian businesses employed their own family members particularly in smaller-scale operations like food-related businesses such as butcheries and bakeries where specific skills were passed down through generations" South Village Historic District Designation Report 2013.
