A settant'anni dalla prima edizione, "L'uomo e la morte" occupa ancora un posto d'eccezione nella storia del pensiero: non è solo una summa di quanto è stato detto e scritto sulla mortalità, ma anche un appello a ritrovare una consapevolezza e una sensibilità che, oggi più che allora, vanno scomparendo. Come tutto ciò che non risulti immediatamente gratificante e che ci costringa a confrontarci con la finitezza, l'idea della morte ha subito un processo di rimozione coatta. Ma non basta rifiutarsi di pensare la fine per riuscire a bandirla: la morte esiliata dalle coscienze rientra attraverso le crepe della vita interiore, e crea in noi una vertigine e uno smarrimento che acquietiamo costruendoci un benessere illusorio. Quando invece, suggerisce Morin, conoscere «la morte attraverso l'uomo e l'uomo attraverso la morte» è l'unico modo di trasformare l'incompiutezza che è il nostro destino: di immaginare un avvenire in cui la morte stessa - e con lei l'uomo - dovrà cambiare. È semplicemente ovunque, non solo nella vita quotidiana, ma anche nell'arte, nella letteratura e nella cultura pop, da quando in Medio Oriente, due millenni fa, si fece conoscere per il suo profumo e per le sue proprietà medicinali. Quello che è meno chiaro è come e perché proprio lei tra tutti i fiori sia diventata così onnipresente, fonte o ornamento di tanti miti, iconografie, linguaggi simbolici: la rosa è cristiana e pagana, mistica e terrena, richiama la bellezza più pura come il presagio della sua corruzione; rappresenta l'amore romantico ma lascia intravedere il vizio e il peccato; può servire a dire la passione più sincera e la più crudele delle bugie. Il segreto della sua fortuna sta nell'essere un meme di antichissima origine, capace di viaggiare lungo le generazioni e le società; anzi, la rosa è un «potente amalgama di memi, un memeplex di grande successo che per evolversi o replicarsi si è adattato al rinnovamento degli ambienti culturali, si è dotato di difese a tutela di certi propri aspetti e nel frattempo è rimasto sempre connesso, in quanto schema significativo di informazioni, alla mente umana». ‎ill., ril. Il gatto - la più elegante, cocciuta e scaltra delle creature - è stato un soggetto prediletto da artisti di ogni cultura ed epoca, fin dalla notte dei tempi. La spettacolare incisione rupestre realizzata in Libia settemila anni fa è forse la più antica testimonianza di una zuffa tra felini, da cui prende avvio una lunga e ininterrotta tradizione visiva. Una profusione di immagini cui non sempre corrisponde un sentimento univoco verso il gatto che, se oggi è fra gli animali domestici più venerati, nei secoli è stato spesso vittima di odio e persecuzione. Da animale sacro nell'antico Egitto a deterrente contro i roditori nella civiltà babilonese, alleato dell'uomo contro gli aspidi dal morso letale, apprezzato per la tecnica venatoria e immortalato come valido compagno di caccia, il gatto si affranca via via dalle attività pratiche diventando l'indolente amico dell'uomo, che gli spalanca le porte della propria casa. La convivenza però non dura a lungo e la sua fortuna conoscerà ancora alti e bassi. Tanto che sul finire del Medioevo prevale l'immagine di malefico sodale del demonio, sprezzo che coincide con il ruolo sinistro cui è relegato nei dipinti. Quasi mai protagonista nelle tele dei grandi maestri ma mero accessorio raggomitolato ai piedi di una figura femminile, bisognerà attendere il sentimentalismo vittoriano perché torni in auge e un radicale cambio di status lo faccia ritrarre, insieme ai suoi compari, in intimistiche scene famigliari. È questo il periodo più propizio per essere gatto, un'età dell'oro sia per l'amorevole relazione con il compagno umano sia per il ruolo centrale che conquista nell'opera d'arte, dove finalmente la fa da padrone. Sensibile a ogni sfumatura felina, il più grande zoologo dei nostri tempi ci racconta la storia dell'arte attraverso la lente degli artisti gattofili. Simbolo di violenza spietata per Pablo Picasso che lo rappresenta in veste di predatore feroce, emblema supremo della sessualità femminile in Balthus, soggetto molto popolare tra vignettisti satirici e caricaturisti fino a diventare volano di denuncia politica con Banksy, il gatto è un'inesauribile fonte per esplorazioni visive e voli pindarici.‎
