Trattato che descrive le teorie legislative in ambito giudiziario dall'antichita' focalizzandosi poi sul concetto di 'vendetta pubblica' riconosciuto da Vecchioni come fondamento della penalita'. Secondo l'A. ordinariamente la parola vendetta fa pensare ad una ignobile passione che 'rende taluno avido del male di colui da cui si crede offeso, e spesse volte lo spinge a procurarlo per vie anche vili ed ingiuste [...] Or dunque senza perder tempo io dichiaro, che per vendetta non intendo una passione, ma una naturale tendenza. [...] La vendetta pubblica e' un'espressione che sta comunemente in bocca di tutti, e ch'e' adoperata da tanti valorosi scrittori, e dalle stesse leggi: potra' dirsi che con un si' autorevole consenso si sia attribuita una vera improbita' di sentimenti all'intero corpo dello stato? Tutte le legislazioni hanno permesso agli offesi di sollecitar la loro vendetta legale, che tenesse luogo dell'abolita vendetta personale: si dira' che in tal modo si sia secondata e fomentata una rea passione?'. Carlo Vecchioni fu vicepresidente della Suprema Corte di Giustizia di Napoli.

Gli animali ci insegnano a relazionarci con loro, aggiungono bellezza alle nostre esistenze amandoci e apprezzandoci senza giudicarci, donandoci grandi emozioni e compagnia, aiutandoci anche nei momenti di tristezza e difficoltà. Già Freud aveva riconosciuto come "il sentimento che proviamo per i cani è lo stesso che proviamo per i bambini", preludendo ai recenti studi scientifici che dimostrano come, tra le persone e i loro animali, si formino veri e propri legami affettivi di dedizione e fedeltà. L'autrice ci parla di questa relazione, del dolore che si prova quando i nostri animali ci lasciano per sempre e di tutti gli aspetti che sarebbe opportuno conoscere e affrontare. Il lutto per la perdita di un animale da compagnia è infatti un processo simile a quello per la perdita di una persona cara. Ma la poca possibilità di esprimere questa sofferenza, determina l'impossibilità di vivere appieno i sentimenti legati a questo lutto attraverso le modalità rituali. I limiti etici ci impediscono di considerare Fido come parte della famiglia. Questo libro è stato scritto per dare indicazioni ed aiuto concreto a chi deve affrontare il dolore per la perdita del proprio animale d'affezione.

La labilità dei confini tra le cure di fine vita ("lasciar morire"), il suicidio assistito ("aiutare a morire") e l'eutanasia ("provocare il morire") non ha permesso finora di affrontare in modo adeguato l'enorme e delicatissimo problema - irto di implicazioni etiche, giuridiche, umane e perfino religiose - di come rispondere a quei pazienti che, affetti da una malattia inguaribile e irreversibile, invocano il "permesso" di morire, o meglio di interrompere una vita "torturata e non più voluta". Umberto Veronesi tratta temi di bruciante attualità, come l'eutanasia e il testamento biologico, presentando le diverse forme di "buona morte" attraverso il racconto di storie eloquenti e strazianti di malati terminali (alcuni molto noti, come Terri Schiavo, Giovanni Nuvoli, Piergiorgio Welby, Eluana Englaro) a cui è stato a lungo negato l'aiuto che avrebbe consentito di risparmiare loro atroci sofferenze. Tali argomenti vengono analizzati alla luce delle differenti posizioni assunte dai vari paesi del mondo, sia i molti in cui l'eutanasia non è permessa sia i pochi (Olanda, Belgio e Lussemburgo) in cui è stata di fatto depenalizzata, pur rimanendo un atto praticabile unicamente da personale medico e a condizione che si tratti di una richiesta motivata, reiterata e consapevole, ovvero dotata di tutti i requisiti che ne attestino la "legalità".

Sono ancora nelle mente di tutti alcuni casi che hanno turbato l'Italia: il caso Englaro, il caso Welby: casi in cui il diritto alla vita è sembrato scontrarsi col diritto alla cura, la libertà col dovere terapeutico. Su questi temi così controversi si confrontano in questo libro due voci diverse: quella di un laico - Umberto Veronesi - e quella di un credente - Giovanni Reale -, quella di un medico, impegnato nella cura del corpo, e quella di un filosofo, preoccupato per definizione dello spirito. A unirli, nel confronto dialettico delle ragioni dell'uno e dell'altro, la convinzione che la moderna medicina debba recuperare il fattore umano, come avveniva nella medicina antica, debba tenere in debito conto le sofferenze psicologiche prodotte dai mali fisici e, soprattutto, debba rispettare la libertà della scelta. Nessuno può decidere sulla vita di un uomo, e meno che mai può decidere lo Stato, per legge. L'autodecisione, per guanto riguarda la vita, è irrinunciabile. Togliere all'uomo l'autodecisione significa negargli la libertà, ossia il bene più grande che Dio gli ha dato. E per questo laici e credenti possono concordare.
