br. "Fai attenzione alle coincidenze, non sono mai dovute al caso... Ti prego di allenarti all'ascolto perché ogni volta che mi domandi aiuto, io rispondo; eppure se non dai il giusto peso alle 'coincidenze' il mio intervento sarà invano, e tu penserai di essere solo". Sono passati ormai vent'anni da quando ho scritto le lettere che ti appresterai a leggere tra poco e oggi quasi per caso le riprendo in mano. Sono state scritte a mio fratello a partire da quella notte del 10 aprile 2001. Scritte per darmi forza, per curarmi l'anima, per lasciare un ricordo di Vincent, di me, di Vincent con me e della ragazza che ero e che avrei voluto essere, diventare con lui, e ora penso a come sono diventata senza di lui, eppure sempre con lui. Lettere che ho buttato giù come uno sfogo, senza pesare le parole, senza pensare alle parole, senza averle prima ragionate. Lettere scritte per edificare un percorso solo mio, interiore, che mi aiutasse a sopportare la sua mancanza, a riempire il vuoto insopportabile e tremendo che aveva lasciato nelle nostre vite. Forse avrei potuto scrivere altro, avrei potuto scrivere diversamente ma il mio cuore si era fermato, insieme al suo. Scrivendo, ho cercato di lenire la solitudine che mi aveva avviluppato come in una spire, soffocandomi con una valanga di sofferenza. Perché scrivere è un riparare una ferita, diventa una terapia giornaliera, si lasciano scorrere sulla carta bianca i pensieri in mezzo al silenzio, alle parole, alla confusione, alla meditazione, alla musica. Le ho scritte sì, anche per ritrovarmi, perché perdendo qualcuno che si ama si perde anche un po' sé stessi.

Atlanta: H. M. Caldwell Pub. Co 1917. 1st ed. Hardcover. Good. portrait photo of Caldwell seated and wearing a black clerical robe 9 24-173p. Original black cloth rebacked with partially reinforced thin cloth including some pieces or more from the original backstrip. 20 cm. The three old staples with which this was cheaply bound are rusted but still present. Internally sound with a lot of ink underlinings in the first two-thirds of the book. Former owner's name "J. S. Flipper" on front pastedown. Brown paperclip mark at top of title-leaf and portrait. Henry McNeal Turner 1834-1915 was freeborn in South Carolina and was the first African American chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War. After Lee's surrender at Appamatox Turner was active in promoting the AME Church to the formerly enslaved in the former Confederacy and also active in politics for a bit in Georgia during the early post Civil War years. Turner was consecrated as a Bishop in the AME Church in 1880. Disillusioned by virulent white racism Bishop Turner got involved in the International Migration Society a Back to Africa effort. Ponton the author of this book was born enslaved in Halifax County North Carolina before the Civil War. We believe that the former owner of this book was Joseph Simeon Flipper 1859-1944 who had served as pastor of Bethel AME Church late in the 19th century and was consecrated as a Bishop of the AME Church in 1908. Bishop Flipper a brother to Henry O. Flipper presided at Bishop Turner's funeral service on May 18th 1914 at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta Georgia. Pages 139-150 in this book detail the funeral proceedings and have no underlinings. While OCLC locates 40 copies of this fragile book it is quite scarce in commerce.
