Senza l'onnipervasività della morte non esisterebbe nulla di tutto ciò. William M. Spellman rende omaggio a questa signoria insieme drammatica e feconda, ripercorrendone i tempi e i modi dal Paleolitico a oggi. Convoca concezioni dell'aldilà e idee di immortalità, incarnata, disincarnata, sociale, ossia affidata al solo ricordo, e reincarnazione, teorie mortaliste, pratiche di congedo dei morenti, culti degli antenati, riti funerari, espressioni del lutto. Ma il grandangolo di Spellman inquadra anche un'assenza. Adesso, nel pieno di una "rivoluzione della mortalità" che ha invertito la spaventosa percentuale di morti premature o violente tipica dell'intera vicenda dell'uomo, è proprio il morire a venire occultato culturalmente. Negare la morte non ci aiuterà a vivere meglio.
