‎Most philosophy has rejected the theater, denouncing it as a place of illusion or moral decay; the theater in turn has rejected philosophy, insisting that drama deals in actions, not ideas. Challenging both views, The Drama of Ideas shows that theater and philosophy have been crucially intertwined from the start. Plato is the presiding genius of this alternative history. The Drama of Ideas presents Plato not only as a theorist of drama, but also as a dramatist himself, one who developed a dialogue-based dramaturgy that differs markedly from the standard, Aristotelian view of theater. Puchner discovers scores of dramatic adaptations of Platonic dialogues, the most immediate proof of Plato's hitherto unrecognized influence on theater history. Drawing on these adaptations, Puchner shows that Plato was central to modern drama as well, with figures such as Wilde, Shaw, Pirandello, Brecht, and Stoppard using Plato to create a new drama of ideas. Puchner then considers complementary developments in philosophy, offering a theatrical history of philosophy that includes Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Burke, Sartre, Camus, and Deleuze. These philosophers proceed with constant reference to theater, using theatrical terms, concepts, and even dramatic techniques in their writings. The Drama of Ideas mobilizes this double history of philosophical theater and theatrical philosophy to subject current habits of thought to critical scrutiny. In dialogue with contemporary thinkers such as Martha Nussbaum, Iris Murdoch, and Alain Badiou, Puchner formulates the contours of a "dramatic Platonism." This new Platonism does not seek to return to an idealist theory of forms, but it does point beyond the reigning philosophies of the body, of materialism and of cultural relativism. ; 254 pages‎

Nach Platons Auffassung ist eine bestimmte Eigenschaft, die an verschiedenen Einzelgegenständen wiederkehrt, als gemeinsame Eigenschaft nur deshalb an den Einzelgegenständen, die dem ständigen Fluß des Werdens und Vergehens unterworfen sind, erkennbar, weil sie als eine Konstante auf einer höheren Seinsstufe, als Eidos oder Idee, als unveränderlich-ewige Form, von den Einzelgegenständen unabhängig (getrennt) existiert: Die Einzelgegenstände a b c haben alle die Eigenschaft F. Dieses F nun sieht Platon als unvollkommenes Abbild eines in höherem Maße seienden4 vollkommeneren Vorbilds F-heit, der Idee der Eigenschaft F, an. Erkennbar im eigentlichen Sinn ist nicht die Eigenschaft am Einzelgegenstand, sondern erkennbar ist allein die Idee, die als ein Ewig-Seiendes im ständigen Fluß des Werdens und Vergehens gleichsam nur gespiegelt wird.‎

Gadamers kritisch zu untersuchen. Das Interesse an der Gadamerschen Lektüre Platons - und damit der kritischen Erhellung derselben - ist mindestens dreifach. Gadamers Interpretation leistet einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur gegenwärtigen Platonrezeption, zur Theorie der Historiographie und zur Platonforschung. Diese drei Aspekte seien hier kurz erörtert. Die Gadamersche Interpretation stellt einen wesentlichen Bestandteil der zeitgenössischen Rezeption Platons und als solcher einen bedeutenden Aspekt der aktuellen Lage der Philosophie überhaupt dar. Das gegenwärtige Interesse an der Rezeption des Platonismus fällt teilweise mit der Erforschung der Geschichte der Klassischen Studien zusammen. Im Zusammenhang mit der Gadamerschen Theorie der Interpretation stellt diese Untersuchung grundsätzliche Fragen nach den hermeneutischen Voraussetzungen und Strategien, welche in der Platonforschung gemeinhin operativ, aber inhaltlich unzureichend thematisiert werden. Die Begrenztheit der meisten Platoninterpretationen liegt in der Theorie, in den Grundvoraussetzungen, die uns bei der Textinterpretation - bewußt oder unbewußt - leiten. Wie J.C. Klagge schreibt: ?Some of the tension that has arisen over the interpretation of Plato is fuelled by the suspicion that others have a hidden agenda behind their approach, and could be eased if we were clearer, both with ourselves and with others, about why we read and reflect on Plato?s work.? Zu untersuchen wären folglich die geistigen Strömungen, von denen die Fragen der Forschung suggeriert oder gar diktiert werden.
