First letter to Bramston ‘Aug. 21 no year on paper watermarked 1864 / Tummil Bridge i.e. Tummell Bridge Pitlochry’ on embossed letterhead of ‘COLL DE BALL / OXON’. Second letter no date or page. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both letters signed ‘B Jowett’. ONE: Autograph Letter Signed to ‘My dear Bramston’. 2pp 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition lightly aged but with discoloration probably deliberate since he is writing from Scotland to letterhead. Strip of paper from mount adhering to blank reverse of second leaf. Folded for postage. Begins by asking for his thanks and those of ‘Lord Kerry’ his student see Abbott’s ‘Life and Letters’ to be sent to ‘Captain Egerton for his kind and hospitable invitation’. He is sorry that they must ‘stick to our books during the few days which remain as we are a real reading party’. He hopes to see him on the Sunday when they can ‘talk over the subject of Mr Norman’s letter’. TWO: Undated letter to ‘Shairp Sherif’. 1 p 16mo. On first leaf of bifolium. With postscript written up one margin. He regrets to inform him that his ‘house is absolutely full’ on the ninth and tenth of the month but he will be ‘very glad to see you & Campbell’ on the eleventh. Postscript concern the public orator and appointment of an examiner. 29 March 1878; Balliol College Oxford. The 1880 'Balliol Masque' indicates Jowett's standing and the pronunciation of his name: 'First come I. My name is Jowett. There's no knowledge but I know it. I am Master of this College What I don't know isn't knowledge.' See Jowett’s entry and those of Lucas and Russell in the Oxford DNB which states regarding Jowett that by the end of his life he had become ‘synonymous with Balliol which he turned into the leading college in the first university in the United Kingdom at the height of its world power’. 1p 12mo. In good condition. Folded twice. A nice item in Jowett’s close controlled hand with one impressively-unobtrusive erasure and correction. Begins: ‘My dear Lucas / Could you take Lord Herbrand Russell second son of the Duke of Bedford as a pupil in London for about a month during the Easter Vacation - to begin at once.’ Russell who is ‘reading for Pass Moderations’ need not take Lucas ‘more than an hour or two a day’. The matter is pressing so Jowett asks to be telegraphed at Oxford. Jacket 'as is' flap hinges and cover edges were reinforced with unobtrusive clear tape due to a number of small chips and tears around the edges and hinges inch piece chipped from jacket rear bottom right corner chipping to front top edge as well; little wear to the book itself as the jacket took the brunt. Jacket now in Brodart for preservation. A good strong hardcover copy. Previous owner's name neatly penned to the ffep gutter of Prof John Michelsen dept of Philosophy at UVic. Text is clean. 'There are innumerable translations of Plato's Republic into English the Jowett and the Cornford being the best known. But Professor Allan Bloom's version will be the only available translation which attempts to be strictly literal. . . Moreover he is convinced that the Platonic dialogues are written on several levels and that the text is never as simple and straightforward as it seems at a cursory glance. He has therefore provided those of us who do not read Greek with the closest translation of the original that has yet been published in English in order that we can come to our own interpretations rather than be dependent on the translator's incomplete interpretation. In addition to the text itself there is a rich and invaluable interpretive essay - as well as indexes and a glossary of terms - which will better enable the student to approach the heart of Plato's intention.'
