In fine condition. Translated from the Greek with introductory analyses by Benjamin Jowett. Preface by Huntington Cairns. Illustrated by Hans Erni. Plato’s The Trial and Death of Socrates is a foundational text in Western philosophy that explores the ethical and political implications of Socrates' final days. Comprising four dialogues—Euthyphro Apology Crito and Phaedo—the work examines the nature of justice the role of the individual in society and the immortality of the soul. In Apology Socrates defends his philosophical mission as a divine duty challenging the moral complacency of Athenian society. Crito presents a powerful argument for obeying the law even in the face of injustice while Phaedo offers a vision of death as a release of the soul to a higher realm. Together these dialogues portray Socrates not only as a martyr for truth but also as a model of rational integrity whose commitment to philosophy transcends the fear of death. Platonis Philosophi Quae Exstant Graece ad Editionem Henrici Stephani Accuarate Expressa . Accedit Varietas Lectionis = The Philosophy of Plato .
Zweibrücken / Biponti: Ex Typographia Societatis Studiis Societatis Bipontinae Deux Ponts Press 1787. Later edition. Hardcover. Very Good or better. 11 vol. 6 iii-c 2 3-267 15; 2 3-368 14 2 pages of publisher's advertisements; 4 3-370 4 i-vii 5; 4 3-390 vii 3 i-vi; 8 i-viii 2 3-359 3; 2 1-380 2; 3 2-424 2; 3 ii-vi 2 1-442 2; 2 1-437 6; 4 3-390 2 i-viii 2; 2 i-xii 2 3-483 1 pp. Contemporary tree calf with the spines in six compartments each spine with a green and a black morocco label lettered in gold gold tooling and decorations on the spines; all edges sprinkled. Each volume's title page with an in-text woodcut of a bust of various ancient persons: Plato Aristippus Diogenes Pericles Alcibiades among others. Text in ancient Greek with the notes and commentary in Latin. With Henry Stephanus' commentary and editing. Also with notes and analysis by Marsilius Ficinius with additional various notes. Brunet 761. Dibdin 299. Moss 426-427. This set was published in twelve volumes. The twelfth volume was published in 1788 and contains only a summary of Plato's philosophy in Latin and an essay by M. Thiedman. It would appear that this final volume is rare: as of 11/23/2022 this cataloger could not locate the twelfth volume of this set in OCLC or in active commerce. All of Plato's philosophy which was published in this set is present in the first eleven volumes. Plato remains a foundational figure in Western philosophy with his dialogues touching on metaphysics love justice civic duty and countless other ancient themes and motifs which remain relevant today. Plato is the reason we are able to construct a picture of Socrates' life: his work provides a good deal of historical information on the Golden Age of Athens. This is a very attractive set of Plato's works edited by two seminal classical scholars. Minor wear to the extremities: overall the bindings are quite sharp except for the front joint of volume nine which is starting. Each volume's front pastedown has an armorial bookplate and an early nineteenth-century name. Volumes six nine and ten each have a small unobtrusive dampspot to a part of their textblocks. Plato; Jowett, B, translator; Demos, Raphael, introduction
The Dialogues of Plato in two volumes
New York: Random House 1937. Hardback. Very good. If you want to understand Western—indeed world—philosophy you have to get a handle on Plato and if you want to get a handle on Plato you have to read his “Dialogues.†This handy two-volume yet unabridged edition of what was originally a five-volume translation is a good way to do that. Current students say it that it still stands up despite being well over a hundred years old. Benjamin Jowett—Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford University clergyman theologian university AND Indian Civil Service administrator and reformer and great friend of Florence Nightingale—continually revised his original work and indeed this version of his translation which originally came out in 1892 just a year before his death was actually his third edition. By the time our copy was published in 1937 MacMillan had originally published the 1892 version and the Oxford University Press had renewed its own copyright in 1920. Random House in fact says the two-volume edition is published “by special arrangement†with the Oxford publishing house. What makes this edition different than Jowett’s original besides the size is that it includes his own notes in the margins as well as Plato’s words so that readers get a commentary on Plato while they read Plato himself. They also get an fresh introduction by Ralph Raphael Demos professor of philosophy at Harvard written especially for the Random House release. The second volume ends with an index to the complete set that runs to 116 pages long.

Both of our two volumes are structurally sound and show little in the way of aging one might expect in books 88 years old. The binding is in excellent condition and perfectly tight and square with no loose or missing pages. In fact the pages themselves have no writing or notes or tears and though they show some general tanning as is normal for their age are actually quite bright. There is even surprisingly little shelfwear to the dark red buckram covers with only a little scuffing to the corners and the top and bottom of the spine. The title translator’s name and Random House’s colophon are stamped in gilt on a black background over the dark red buckram spine and still show up nicely; however the color of the fabric on the spine is slightly faded and that means the stamping of the publisher’s name and volume number at the bottom has also faded. These volumes come from the personal library of a former headmaster of Chauncey Hall School and the name of the school is stamped at the top and bottom of the text blocks of each volume. His name and a small doodle are written on the front pastedown of each book and there are the barely perceptible remains of where a bookplate was removed on the front flysheets. See our photos for details. Random House unknown

PLATO; JOWETT, Benjamin (translator).
The Republic of Plato. Translated into English with introduction analysis marginal analysis and index by B. Jowett M.A.
Oxford At the Clarendon Press 1888. . Third edition; 8vo 23 x 16 cm; ownership inscription to front free endpaper verso old bookseller's ticket to front pastedown occasional offsetting; early 20th-century maroon calf prize-binding for Magdalen College Oxford gilt arms to upper cover covers ruled in gilt gilt spine in 6 compartments top-edge gilt a little rubbed with slight loss slight staining to spine very good; 8 ccxxix 1 379 1pp.
A handsome copy of most-famous of the Socratic dialogues translated into English with notes and introductory essays by Benjamin Jowett 1817-1893 Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford from 1855 until his death.

Known originally as the Politeia its title derives from the Greek for city-state polis meaning 'constitution' or 'community of citizens' and gave rise through Cicero res publica to the modern term republic. The text explores the nature of justice explaining that the same qualities which order the hypothetical ideal polis also govern the immortal soul. The resultant discussion contains one of the earliest examples of a written thought-experiment in Plato's allegory of the cave which solidifies his theory of forms that it is the intelligible world perceived through reason which is the basis of all knowledge rather than physical sensory experience.

It 'has truly been said that the germ of all ideas can be found in Plato' PMM.

This copy a prize-binding for Magdalen College Oxford awarded to the German-born British artist Delmar Banner 1896-1983 best known for his portrait of Beatrix Potter which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery London and for representing Great Britain in the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics.
Oxford, At the Clarendon Press, 1888. unknown
