Bradley was Secretary-Treasurer of the Beaverkill Trout Club from 1910-1929; the club had 43 members at the time of his writing. A brief but detailed section of reminiscences is followed by early photographs of sport along the Beaverkill before World War I including author Geo. M. L. La Branche in mid-cast. Each photograph is titled in a fine hand which Bruns speculates is that of "Lady B." pictured on p. 19. There are also photographs of trout fishing in Maine and other points in New York State and of the author and his friend Charlie Campbell president of the club 1910-1923 fishing for Atlantic salmon in Newfoundland. Campbell was the friend who first brought Bradley to the Voorhees homestead in 1908 and with Bradley formed the Beaverkill Trout Club. Campbell's motto was "It's better just a little farther on". These recollections were evidently composed in 1927 for a speech to fellow members to judge from the text and expanded for publication here.<br/><br/>"A very rare work numbering about 25 copies" Heller. Original dark blue grained leatherette title gilt on upper cover. A fine fresh copy. First edition one of only 30 copies this copy numbered in ink "Seven". Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. E.H. Rawls Copy. In his Foreword the author states: "These sketches were written for the members of the Moisie Salmon Club. The sole purpose was to give information to them of the waters and conditions of the Moisie River and its branches above the places customarily fished by them.". The Moisie is one of a network of navigable rivers running about 110 miles northward from the St. Lawrence in eastern Quebec; old and well worn portage paths testify to the antiquity of the route along which for hundreds of years Indians have hunted and fished. For salmon and sea trout it is one of the richest areas known. It is not surprising that the Moisie Salmon Club was founded to reap the benefits of this bounty; what is surprising is that so much care attention and expense has been lavished on a book limited to only 30 copies. The text consists primarily of the author's descriptions of areas north of the more usual fishing sites based on his explorations as a sportsman with guides. In addition to five colored plates which tend to establish the romantic mood of the region there are 28 superb reproductions of sepia photographs printed on special photographic-type paper to convey both the look and the actual feel of the originals. The book's 78 pages conclude with an Index and inside the back cover is mounted a folding map of the area described.<br/><br/>The book is rare not in Wetzel or Heller not seen by Bruns and the only copy we know of to appear at auction - a worn copy - brought $1870 at the Netz sale in New York in 1986.<br/><br/>This copy bears the ownership signature of E.H. Rawls on the front flyleaf: pages 12 to 19 comprise Edward H. Rawls' own account of his 1929 trip to the East Branch Chute and Cran Serré of the Moisie River where he was the first to take salmon on a light rod above the falls in defiance of "the old story retold until believed by everyone that salmon would rise ot the fly above the rapids". Palmer notes that Rawls' exploits prompted the club to build the Webster trail and develop the upper river.<br/><br/>A choice association copy. Edward Bradley 1827-1889 under the pen-name of Cuthbert Bede. Bradley had learned wood-engraving from no less than George Cruikshank but as Houfe notes "remained very much the amateur illustrating his own books.and others in a jolly and careless style." He also drew for Punch and "was one of the first illustrators to satirise photography."<br/><br/>This drawing jolly and careless shows two sketches of the hapless freshman unsuccessfully defending a wicket--the drawings appear in more finished wood-engraved form on pages 100-101 of The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green-- and a more formal portrait done in the year in which The Adventures first appeared thus making it an Oxford literary and cricket item all in one. 'All the world's a stage' but the stage for the next world drama is I think the Orient and therefore it is interesting to study the players. At any rate this little book is a record of the most interesting experience that I ever expect to have." "Parsons . accepted the direction of a survey of some 1000 miles of railway in China primarily on the line from Hankow to Canton. The party passed through the then 'closed province' of Hu-nan and the success of the entire venture depended not alone on engineering skill but primarily upon the ability of the leader of the expedition to meet the extremely difficult diplomatic problems involved. Nevertheless the mission was accomplished and the small group of American engineers to the surprise of many of their friends returned in safety" DAB. By the time he became our second president no American had written more about our government and not even Jefferson or Madison had read as widely about questions of human nature natural right political organization and constitutional construction. Yet this staunch constitutionalist is perceived by many as having become reactionary in his later years and his ideas have been largely disregarded. In the first major work on Adams's political thought in over thirty years C. Bradley Thompson takes issue with the notion that Adams's thought is irrelevant to the development of American ideas. Focusing on Adams's major writings Thompson elucidates and reevaluates his political and constitutional thought by interpreting it within the tradition of political philosophy stretching from Plato to Montesquieu. This major revisionist study shows that the distinction Adams drew between "principles of liberty" and "principles of political architecture" is central to his entire political philosophy. Thompson first chronicles Adams's conceptualization of moral and political liberty during his confrontation with American Loyalists and British imperial officers over the true nature of justice and the British Constitution illuminating Adams's two most important pre-Revolutionary essays "A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law" and "The Letters of Novanglus." He then presents Adams's debate with French philosophers over the best form of government and provides an extended analysis of his Defence of the Constitutions of Government and Discourses on Davila to demonstrate his theory of political architecture. From these pages emerges a new John Adams. In reexamining his political thought Thompson reconstructs the contours and influences of Adams's mental universe the ideas he challenged the problems he considered central to constitution-making and the methods of his reasoning. Skillfully blending history and political science Thompson's work shows how the spirit of liberty animated Adams's life and reestablishes this forgotten Revolutionary as an independent and important thinker.
