AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Leonard Bacon 1887 - 1954 was a poet and critic who taught at the University of California. His poetry was published in the Saturday Review of Literature under the pseudonym "Autholycus. " He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 for SUNDERLAND CAPTURE. "I have tried to set down what I saw or knew and to expres my feelings about the seen or the known as exactly aand vividly as lay in my powers. The matters I have chosen to relate have been selected from a memory which like all memories is as crowded as the rush-hour in a subway and they were chosen because I hoped they might divert or attract persons who had never heard of me and might perhaps prefer things that way. A tight and attractive first edition surprisingly uncommon of this history of the ill-fated ship and biographical sketch by the noted Milwaukee businessman 1926-2013 who co-founded the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970 and brought the great American pastime back to Beertown -- and whose father of the same name civic leader chairman of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company was the namesake of the celebrated Great Lakes freighter S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald that sunk tragically in a storm in 1975 subject of Gordon Lightfoot's evocative "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Best of all this handsome copy has been inscribed and signed by the author in black ballpoint on the half-title page: "To: Adlai E. Stevenson / With Best Wishes / Edmund Fitzgerald." Adlai E. Famed caricaturist whose portraits of the famous collected in books such as "Off With Their Heads!" made her subjects cringe; she wrote and illustrated 18 books "The Good American Witch" 1957 being the best known and illustrated 46 books by other writers. Signed book illustration 1p 4" X 7" n.p. n.d. Fine. Printed sketch entitled "Westminster Abbey" depicting half a dozen faces gazing to the left signed boldly underneath in pencil. Judging from the paper quality this is certainly an illustration from one of the books she illustrated and research could pinpoint which one; verso of illustration is blank.
