In this harshly realistic yet oddly tender and wise novel Hemingway perceptively delineates the personal struggles of both the "haves" and the "have nots" and creates one of the most subtle and moving portraits of a love affair in his oeuvre. In turn funny and tragic lively and poetic remarkable in its emotional impact Takes literary high adventure to a new level. ‎The Sun Also Rises - A Bantam Book Complete & Unabridged #717‎

‎New York: Bantam Books 1949. Stated at copyright: Bantam Edition Published September 1949. Pictorial wraps moderate shelf wear. Pages generally very good; attractively toned. Vintage name inside cover: "Milton Starr". Bind good; some uneveness to text block. Hemingway's great post-World War I novel first major work and the classic novel of the "lost generation". A vivid exploration of the moral wasteland of Europe in the Twenties and of the sterility and despair of postwar life. The hero Jake Barnes has suffered a war injury leaving him impotent. Hopelessly in love with the seductive and flamboyant Lady Brett Ashley Jake leaves Paris to accompany Brett her drunken fianc and an American boxer to Pamplona watching as she falls for a young bullfighter. The expatriate crowd that Hemingway portrays so vividly passes their lives in an aimless alcoholic haze against which the local fiestas and the running of the bulls seem by contrast full of vitality--a quality that is alien to them. The settings are romantic - the bull ring the Paris streets the bars cafs and hotels - but Hemingway invests them all with a disillusion that undercuts the glamour of expatriate life. Six page of pictorial adverts at back. 212 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Paperback. Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Book. Bantam Books Paperback‎

‎In Our Time: Stories by Ernest Hemingway Modern Masterpieces in English‎

‎2 Rue Cardinale Paris France: Crosby Continental Editions 1932. First edition thus. 1932 at title page; no other dates indications. French publication from Crosby Continental for their consumption. Manila wraps red cover design titles spine titles moderate wear discoloration spine chip. Unique design with wrap-around cover flaps with additional printed literature of other available and future titles from the series. Pages good; moderate toning discoloration. Bind good intact. Printed at rear cover: "Not to be introduced into the British Empire or U.S.A. Sole distributors Hachette Paris." Rare French edition in English of Hemingway's second book. The first collection of Ernest Hemingway's short stories. Its title is derived from the English Book of Common Prayer "Give us peace in our time O Lord." The stories using Hemingway's usual spare language include descriptions of acts of war bullfighting and current events. When In Our Time was first published in 1925 it was praised by Ford Madox Ford John Dos Passos and F. Scott Fitzgerald for its simple precise use of language to convey a wide range of complex emotions. It earned Hemingway a place beside Sherwood Anderson and Gertrude Stein - considered the most promising American writers of the period. Contains several early Hemingway classics including the famous Nick Adams stories "Indian Camp" "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife" "The Three Day Blow" "The Battler" and "Big Two-Hearted River." This volume introduces readers to the hallmarks of the Hemingway style: a sharp lean prose -- enlivened by an aptitude for the every-day and an eye for the realistic that suggests through the simplest of statements a sense of moral value and clarity of heart. Recognized as one of the most original short story collections in twentieth-century literature and provides a key to Hemingway's later works. 221 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Soft Cover. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially." This is Ernest Hemingway's third full-length novel following The Torrents of Spring and The Sun Also Rises. The story recounts the romance between Frederic Henry an American soldier and Catherine Barkley a British nurse. Heavily autobiographical the plot was directly inspired by Hemingway's relationship with Agnes von Kurowsky in Milan. Catherine's parturition childbirth was inspired by the intense labor pains of Pauline in the birth of Patrick - Ernest' second wife and second son - and the real-life Kitty Cannell inspired the fictional Helen Ferguson. The priest was based on Don Giuseppe Bianchi the priest of the 69th and 70th regiments of the Brigata Ancona. Printed in the U.S.A. Large 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" design. 330 pages. Insured post. ‎Across the River and Into the Trees First Printing‎

‎Thirty Bedford Square London: Jonathan Cape 1950. First U.K. Edition Published September 4 1950 three days before the first U.S. Edition. Stated at copyright: First Published 1950. Blue-green full cloth boards maroon cover symbol and spine field w/silver spine titles moderate shelf wear discoloration. Pages fine clean; no writing. Bind fine; hinges intact. Stylish wrapper moderate rub edge wear closed tear; unclipped 9s. 6d. net protected in new clear sleeve. Colorfully subdued wrap-around jacket art by Hans Tisdall of Venetian docked gondola. Titles beautifully incorporated in wrapper image w/title itself at back panel. Ernest Hemingway's first novel in a decade - since For Whom the Bell Tolls - holds the essential emotion of that phenomenally successful book. In 'Across the River and into the Trees' there is a concept of the same intensity. Like the story of the Spanish civil war which was centered upon a microcosm of action - the tense last days of an American in the midst of a group of guerrilla fighters this story limits its scope to a very short span in the life of an American. This story builds its bridge not of days but of hours and it is even more charged with feeling. For many readers it will evoke a memorable earlier novel A Farewell to Arms because the background again is Italy and again it is war. This newer war however is already in the past. The fighting is over; the reader hears only its echoes. Venice is the scene and Colonel Richard Cantwell of the United States Army is the principal figure; and perhaps the most complex character Hemingway ever presented. Printed in Great Britain in the city of Oxford at The Alden Press; bound by A. W. Bain & Co. Ltd London. 254 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Hardcover. ‎For Whom the Bell Tolls‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1940. Early Scribner edition; unstated 1940 at copyright. Navy full cloth boards w/silver stamped Hemingway signature and quill gilt and silver spine titles some rub shelf wear. Deckled pages good no writing; toned. Bind good; hinges intact. Tells the story of Robert Jordan a young American in the International Brigades attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As an expert in the use of explosives he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. Told primarily through the thoughts and experiences of Robert Jordan a character inspired by Hemingway's own experiences in the Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan is an American who travels to Spain to oppose the fascist forces of Generalsimo Francisco Franco. A superior has ordered him to travel behind enemy lines and destroy a bridge using the aid of a group of guerrillas who have been living in the mountains nearby. Robert Jordan encounters one of those in their camp Mara a young Spanish native whose life has been shattered by the outbreak of the war. His strong sense of duty clashes with both Republican leader Pablo's unwillingness to commit to a covert operation and his own joie de vivre that is kindled by his newfound love for Mara. The novel graphically describes the unutterable brutality of civil war. 507 pages. Insured post. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book. ‎Across the River and Into the Trees First State Jacket‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1950. First printing with "A" and Scribner Press colophon at copyright; first state jacket w/spine titles on yellow background. Black coated full cloth boards gilt embossed Hemingway signature at frt. board light shelf wear. Deckled pages fine no writing; lt. must scent. Bind fine; hinges intact. Dj fully intanct some edge wear crease generally good attractive; clipped protected in new clear sleeve. Jacket design by A. Ivancich. Venice is the scene. Colonel Richard Cantwell of the United States Army is the principal figure and perhaps the most complex character Hemingway ever presented. 308 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book. Charles Scribner's Sons Hardcover‎

‎Ernest Hemingway Selected Letters 1917-1961‎

‎New York: Charles Scribners Sons 1984. Brown cloth boards gilt spine titles lt. shelf wear. Pages fine. Dj lt. wear protected in new clear sleeve. Very attractive. While many are familiar with the public image of Hemingway and the legendary accounts of his life few knew him as an intimate. With this collection of letters presented for the first time as a Scribner Classic a new Hemingway emerges. Ranging from 1917 to 1961 this generous selection of nearly six hundred letters is both a self-portrait and an autobiography. In his own words Hemingway candidly reveals himself to a wide variety of people: family friends enemies editors translators and almost all the prominent writers of his day. In so doing he proves to be one of the most entertaining letter writers of all time. 948 pages. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book. Charles Scribners Sons Hardcover‎
