Maurer Paul. Hemingway Ernest
From Ernest Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon
Serafina NM 2017. Artist's book one of 4 copies on various papers hand lettered with metal pens and sumi ink original block prints with water-based inks signed by the artist on the colophon. Page size: 7.5 x 8.25 inches; 24pp; colophon. Bound by the artist: hand-sewn in red linen thread brown paper wrappers that have been printed with overall pattern of deep brown and vertical rectangular image of matador standing and saluting the crowd with his red cape and sword in his hand on the front on gold gilt ground and a horizontal rectangle image of black bull on red ground housed in cover stock brown paper with block print of matador inserting two banderillas from the 2nd stage of the corrida into the bull's shoulders. The dramatic titlepage a block engraving printed in black and red is followed by an opening page spread that has the text starting "So I went to Spain." on the verso and an image of a bull and picador with the ensuing blood The text lines are curved following the block print lines. This is the relationship between each subsequent image and text page. The curving lines and bulls curving neck as well as the muleta are all intertwined to make striking images of the ritual that Hemingway describes as a tragedy. The artist's images are often stark bold and haunting. This Spanish spectacle is centuries old but is fast losing popular support. The sport in which it is certain that the bull dies is approaching its own demise. The shock of the corrida is aptly conveyed by Paul Maurer's images. The ambivalence of Hemingway's words "If I could have made this enough of a book it would have had everything in it." which is the last text page is indicative of another time. unknown books

From Preface: "Bahr is a fine honest writer with a talent which is both sturdy and delicate. Mr. Bahr I am sure will write a fine novel eventually - maybe he's planned it already. Old folds overall very good with accompanying envelope addressed in Hemingway's hand. One page with 5-line postscript in blue ink on sheet of personal stationery. 1 vols. 8vo. The Hemingways on a Diet. George Brown owned a gym in New York City where Hemingway worked out when he was in the town and he and George Brown became fast friends Brown serving as his trainer and boxing coach as well as supplier of sporting goods ticket agent and general factotum to Hemingway Martha and later Mary while they were in Cuba.<br/>A relaxed and contented Hemingway writes to his friend Brown basking in the financial success of FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS newly married to Martha Gellhorn happy with his recently purchased home in Cuba: "Thank you ever so much for the things. They all came through the customs okay and Martha's shoes have made a big improvement in her tennis. She beat me 6-3 for a dollar and today I think I can get her on the court for two dollars. We'll see what happens. She is down to 127 and I'm stuck at around 215 and can't get under it probably because of no big fish to boil the fat off the inside. It's been very quiet since you left and no more shouts of 'Brown's deuce' and other rare methods of counting at tennis . I'll try and get in good shape before we come to New York so oil up your bicycle. Don't try to come off the ropes holding with that right hand because I've thought up something terrible to have happen . Martha sends her love."<br/>Beneath in ink Hemingway can't resist reporting his scores at shooting: "won a couple of matches at pigeons. 15 x 15. 17 x 17. And won $175 in combination singles and doubles shoot 19 x 20". unknown books

HEMINGWAY ERNEST
Green Hills of Africa
New York: Scribner's 1935. First edition. Fine. FIRST EDITION FIRST APPEARANCE of Hemingway's classic account of his 1933 African safari; this Scribner's magazine appearance precedes the first edition in book form. "Green Hills of Africa was written in Key West in 1934 mostly over a period of several months with interruptions for fishing expeditions in the Caribbean and another trip to Cuba. Published in October 25 1935 after serialization in Scribner's magazine it was indeed a book about landscape though Hemingway referred to it in more magical or mystical terms as 'country'.

<br /> <br /> "It is probably that this communication of the sense of place and the sense of the immediacy and palpability of the experience in that place is what gives the Green Hills of Africa its special distinction.

<br /> <br /> "But even more than country Green Hills of Africa is a book about writing and writers. As a writer he wanted to see 'how far prose can be carried if any one is serious enough and has luck' to see if prose could attain a fourth and even a fifth dimension." Mellow Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences; Baker Hemingway the Writer as Artist.

<br /> <br /> IN: Scribner's Magazine May - November 1935. New York: Scribner's 1935. Quarto original wrappers; custom box. Seven issues complete. Without any of the usual stamps or labels. An outstanding set - the finest we've seen. . Scribner's unknown books

Program for the 1943 film FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS With Tickets for The "Million Dollar War Bond Premiere"
New York: Paramount Pictures 1943. First Edition. Wraps. Near fine. 4to. Publisher's original wraps. Minor edgewear. with: Two tickets printed on stiff card measuring 7" x 3.75" approx. with trace edgewear. Near fine overall. <br/><br/>A souvenir program in exceptional condition for Paramount's technicolor epic FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS based on Ernest Hemingway's novel of the Spanish Civil War. The top-grossing film of 1943 BELL was also used as a propaganda effort for the war effort as demonstrated by accompanying tickets. With a face value of $500 per ticket the event was designed to sell $1 million in war bonds in a single evening. An interesting example of Hollywood's extensive involvement in the war effort and a scarce group of ephemeral Hemingwayana. Paramount Pictures paperback books
