This lovely view by Sarony and Co. of a Chinese temple in Hong Kong was drawn from nature by Wilhelm Heine with figures by Eliphalet Brown Jr. It features two Chinese men sitting in the foreground near a road. People can be seen walking towards the Chinese temple featured in mid-ground with Victoria Peak looming in the background. This view appears in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852 1853 and 1854 under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. The view is in good condition with minor foxing and staining especially along the margins. Dr. Francis Lister Hawks 1798 - 1866 was an American priest of the Episcopal Church and a politician in North Carolina. Sarony & Co unknown

Draped with American flags the deck was prepared for a grand dinner part. The Japanese showed up wearing their best Kimono sporting their swords. In this work we see the Japanese seated at a long table and milling about with bottles of whiskey all around. The American flag flies before the building while a sailor stands guard with his shouldered rifle with bayonet fixed. In the background of the temple is the grave yard. Haas 2 chromolithographs 7 lithographs printed in 2 colors on India paper and mounted as issued original pictorial wrappers with the title enclosed by 8 vignette scenes and an American eagle at the top the wrappers backed in blue cloth; the whole in the publisher's quarter green morocco lettered in gilt on upper cover; some soiling of the front wrapper and title page a little spotted but over all very good or better. Bennett p. 53: "The plates are very beautiful Japanese scenes and places of special interest many times finer than the plates in the three-volume regular account of the Perry Expeditionose in the regular account of the Perry expedition." Heine 1827-1885 was the official artist on Perry's expedition to Japan in 1853-54. The sketches he produced of the places he visited and the people he encountered there together with the daguerreotypes taken by his colleague Eliphalet Brown Jr. formed the basis of the official iconograhy of the American expedition to Japan which remains an important record of the country as it was before the foreigners arrived in force. Upon his return to New York in 1855 he published several books: a collection of prints entitled Graphic Scenes of the Japan Expedition; and the 400 sketches which were included in Perry's official report as well as his memoirs Reiss um die Welt nach Japan Leipzig 1856. Philadelphia: T. Sinclair 1856. unbound. Color Lithograph. Image measures 6.5" x 9.5". This beautiful 1856 view of the Lighthouse at Point de Galle Ceylon Sri Lanka was issued by T. Sinclair. It features natives in the foreground who are either fishing or with cattle. In the background the Point de Galle light is visible. Known to be Sri Lanka's oldest light station the lighthouse was built in 1840 and was powered by a weight driven machine. The original lighthouse pictured here was destroyed by a fire in 1934 and a new lighthouse was built in its place. > This view drawn from nature by Wilhelm Heine with figures by Eliphalet Brown Jr. appears in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852 1853 and 1854 under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. In good condition with minor foxing. Dr. Francis Lister Hawks 1798-1866 was an American priest of the Episcopal Church and a politician in North Carolina. T. Sinclair unknown

A grand scene shows a large hall with decorated walls the presentation of American gifts of long swords to the Lew Chew Regent. A large line-up of American Naval officers and the Regents and his court sown. Standing around are several other American officers and two Marines in full dress with rifles. Of special interest are the artists leaning against the large columns: Heine at the left and Brown to the right shown sketching this scene including the two artists ! . unknown

4 486 1 1 blankFirst and only edition in Dutch of the travel account of a German artist on board Commodore Perry's ship to Japan. As the official artist on board Perry's expedition Heine made hundreds of sketches during the journey which form an important record of Japan just before the Meiji Restoration. As can be expected of an artist Heine's descriptions of his travels are very scenic. Added to the travel account is an ethnographical description of Japan. Heine's very popular work was originally published in German and immediately translated into French and Dutch. The 11 plates include a view of the Ryukyu islands a bathhouse in Shimoda and Perry in conference with Japanese negotiators. Binding worn at the extremities with the top of the spine repaired.
