A nearly fine copy with a few interesting paper flaws incurred during/before the printing process. Further paper flaws on Hh2 and Ii2 with loss of a few letters. Undated on first title but the fifth and final book dated 1608. Full dark green morocco binding spine with five raised bands with gilt fleurons and framed in blind gilt date at foot. Covers with a Du Seuil-style double panel of blind-ruled borders gilt fleurons at the corners of the inner panel marbled endpapers and pastedowns inner gilt dentelle gilt edges edges and spine-ends ruled in gilt. Three volumes. Volume one is illustrated with a frontispiece and four plates. Volume two is illustrated with five plates. Volume three is illustrated with four plates. Collated complete. Five books on the adventures of Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. Although most chapters are humorous wildly fantastic and frequently absurd a few relatively serious passages have become famous for expressing humanistic ideals of the time. Written by Francois Rabelais a French writer who has been called the first great French prose author. In his day he was best known as a physician scholar diplomat and Catholic priest later he became better known as a satirist for his depictions of the grotesque and for his larger-than-life characters. Translated by Sir Thomas Urquhart a Scottish aristocrat writer and translator and Peter Anthony Motteux a French-born English author playwright and translator. Illustrated by Louis Chalon a French painter sculptor illustrator and goldsmith. In the original brown cloth binding. Publisher's polychrome illustrated boards signed Souze and bound by Engel. Special gilt and blue plate on red ground. Spine similar. Rear board with a half-timbered house in a central roundel and blind angular cornerpieces. Front board of first volume very good that of the second with a 1cm diameter stain and soiling to the upper part of the black border. Lower corners bumped others rubbed. A tear to the spine of the first volume. Headcaps rubbed those at head turned in. Soiling to rear boards. Scattered and unevenly distributed foxing. Some leaves sprung.
