Further paper flaws on Hh2 and Ii2 with loss of a few letters. Undated on first title but the fifth and final book dated 1608. Five books on the adventures of Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. Although most chapters are humorous wildly fantastic and frequently absurd a few relatively serious passages have become famous for expressing humanistic ideals of the time. Written by Francois Rabelais a French writer who has been called the first great French prose author. In his day he was best known as a physician scholar diplomat and Catholic priest later he became better known as a satirist for his depictions of the grotesque and for his larger-than-life characters. Translated by Sir Thomas Urquhart a Scottish aristocrat writer and translator and Peter Anthony Motteux a French-born English author playwright and translator.
