<p>This is a beautifully illustrated copy of "The Works of Rabelais" - Faithfully Translated from the French with Variorum Notes and Numerous Illustrations by GUSTAVE DORE including 20 additional new illustrations. Circa 1920's there is no date of publication stated. Privately printed.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Small light stain at the bottom of the front cover. The lettering on the spine has faded. There is a thin vertical strip along the center of the back cover where the cloth has creased. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The title page has dates and "trans. by Urquhart" written in pen; 28 pages were found that have markings in pen such as a line in the outer margin a small notation a check-mark and an arrow. Pages 254-257 and the illustrated page in between each have a small piece missing at the top edge. Some pages at the back are still attached along the top or bottom edge. Surname written in pen at the top of the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good- condition.</p> Privately Printed hardcover

Each volume illustrated with an engraved frontispiece with an engraved title page vignette portrait of the author in Vol. 1 only. Collated complete. Offering the works of Francois Rabelais translated from the French. With notes by M. le du Chat and others.Rabelais is considered the first great French prose author best known for his satirist depictions of the grotesque and his giant characters Gargantua and Pantagruel written in the style of bildungsroman. This 'Works of' collection features these bold stories as well as letters written by Rabelais during his stay in Italy in the year 1526 to Vol IV. Bound in full lightly speckled calf with red morocco spine labels. Externally with rubbing to the extremities. Upper joint of Vol I cracked but firm. Internally generally firmly bound with p. 123-142 of Vol I coming away partly. Pages are generally bright and clean. Front cover of volume 1 is just starting to crack off; it is s till attached but must be handled with care. Boards of volume 2 are slightly bowed. An illustrated set of Rabelais novels with a black and white plate to frontispiece of each volume and numerous illustrations throughout. In three volumes complete. The museum edition with a decorative half title. François Rabelais c.1494 - 9 April 1553 was a major French Renaissance writer doctor Renaissance humanist monk and Greek scholar. He has historically been regarded as a writer of fantasy satire the grotesque bawdy jokes and songs. His best known work is Gargantua and Pantagruel. The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel is a connected series of five novels written in the 16th century by François Rabelais. It is the story of two giants a father Gargantua and his son Pantagruel and their adventures written in an amusing extravagant satirical vein. The text features much crudity scatological humour and violence. Lists of explicit or vulgar insults fill several chapters. The censors of the Sorbonne stigmatised it as obscene and in a social climate of increasing religious oppression it was dealt with with suspicion and contemporaries avoided mentioning it With a life and critical essay to front of first volume. In quarter cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Externally sound but with bumping and wear to extremities and slight marks to boards. Internally binding slightly strained. With slight marginal age toning to pages but generally clean but with the odd mark and foxing to endpapers only. Very Good Gibbings and Company hardcover
London: Gibbings and Company Ltd 1901. 5 volumes bound in blue cloth with attractive gilt decoration and titles to the covers and spines top edge gilt title pages printed in black and red engraved frontispieces and a few other plates within the text. Very good gilt dulled to the spine but the panels are bright and clean cloth rubbed to the corners and a couple of nicks to the fore edge of volume IV the bindings are firm text block edges dusty but the text is clean and crisp.
