Apparently the magazine is insisting on the removal of certain passages which can however be restored when the novel is published in book form. George Sand adds tartly "On reflection I don't know why its Protestantism should shock them Maurice and his wife are both Protestants. If there is any esprit de corps on that journal they should welcome one more co-religionist. That is a circumstance which may be important" 1 side 8vo. with original integral autograph address leaf no place no date but The recipient of the letter Albert Lacroix was a well-known editor and critic. He risked launching some seminal authors like the Goncourt brothers and �mile Zola. In 1869 he published Les Chants de Maldoror by Comte de Lautr�amont. However fearing prosecution for blasphemy and obscenity he ultimately refused to sell the book. In 1862 he was the original publisher of Les Mis�rables. He and George Sand became close friends.
