A copy of 'Chantecler; Piece en Quatre Actes en Vers'Edmond Eugne Alexis Rostand 1 April 1868 2 December 1918 was a French poet and dramatist. He is associated with neo-romanticism and is best known for his play Cyrano de Bergerac. Rostand's romantic plays provided an alternative to the naturalistic theatre popular during the late nineteenth century. Includes a bookplate from the private library of one Lesley Lewis and bound in original paper wraps. In French. Condition: In a half morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally very smart with some rubbing and wear to the spine and a mark to the front board. Internally firmly bound and clean with some age toning. Overall Condition: VERY GOOD INDEED. Paris - Charpentier and Fasquelle 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two French plays by Rostand performed in Paris in 1900 starring Sarah Bernhardt. In French. La Princesse Lointaine 'shown for the first time in Paris April 5 1895 in the Theatre de la Renaissance. L'Aiglon 'shown for the first time in the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt March 15 1900'. This characterbecame one of Bernhardt's signature roles. This copy of L'Aiglon states that it was one of 180 numbered copies printed on Japanese paper however this is not numbered. Two volumes each complete in themselves uniformly bound. Ink binder's stamps of J. and E. Bumpus Oxford Street to versos of front free-endpapers. Condition: In cloth bindings with leather spine labels. Externally sound a few marks. Internally firmly bound. Pages of Princesse are browned and L'Aiglon has marginal age-toning but both are generally clean just the odd spot or small tidemark. Overall: VERY GOOD. Paris - Charpentier and Fasquelle hardcover
