In Latin.Hugh Grotius' 'Annotations' in which he applies philological criticism to the text of the Bible whilst contemporaneously moderating them with the assertion that as in law convention plays an enormously important role in theology such that correct interpretation of the scriptures requires respect for the Church's traditions.Title page has been laid down. Lacking endpapers and portrait leaf. Hugo Grotius 1583-1645 was a prodigious Dutch lawyer. He entered University at Leyden at 12; and was appointed Historian of the States General at 18 and Advocate Fiscal at 24. He travelled to England in a diplomatic capacity in 1613 before becoming Pensionary of Rotterdam. His Arminian theology and attempts to facilitate peace between theologically-opposed factions earned him a life sentence in 1618; although he escaped to Paris in 1621. He attempted to return to Holland in 1631 but was banished and settled in Sweden. In 1635 he returned to Paris in an ambassadorial capacity for the Kingdom of Sweden. He was killed in a shipwreck on a voyage home in 1645.Bookplate of Professor David Arthur Pailin to the front pastedown. Rebound in a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally smart with just a few light marks. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with just a few odd spots.Small wormhole to the tail to the margin of pages 1 to 34 and to the margin of pages 215 to 224. Some pages are a little edgeworn. Giovanni Francesco Conforti Calvanico 7 January 1743 - Naples December 7 1799 was a priest theologian jurist historian and Italian the Republic Neapolitan martyr of 1799. Hugo Grotius 10 April 1583 Ð 28 August 1645 was imprisoned for his involvement in the intra-Calvinist disputes of the Dutch Republic but escaped. Two-volume set is bound in full vellum with handwritten spine label with manuscript title. This set contains both the works of Hugo Grotius "De Imperio summarum potestatum circa sacra" as well as David Blondel "De Jure Plebis in Regimine Ecclesiastico." binding is solid. Contents are clean full vellum worm holes in spine covering do not appear elsewhere int he two volumes. While imprisoned Grotius stated. "as to my views on the power of the Christian civil authorities in ecclesiastical matters I refer to my.booklet De Pietate Ordinum Hollandiae and especially to an unpublished book De Imperio summarum potestatum circa sacra where I have treated the matter in more detail.I may summarize my feelings thus: that the civil authorities should scrutinize God's Word so thoroughly as to be certain to impose nothing which is against it; if they act in this way they shall in good conscience have control of the public churches and public worship but without persecuting those who err from the right way."
