Small nicks to margins of titlepage.‎ ‎First appearance of a milestone paper in genetics being the ""REDISCOVERY"" OF MENDEL'S LAWS OF HEREDITY"" - This paper, together with the two other papers from the same year by Carl Correns and Erich Tschermak, laid the foundations of a new scientific discipline that, in 1906, was given the name ""genetics"", and less than a century later, rose to become the leading science in Western society. This French announcement was published 4 days before his longer paper ""Das Spaltungsgesetzt der Hybride"", in which Mendel is mentioned.De Vries completed most of his hybridization experiments without knowing about Mendel's work. Based on his own results, de Vries drew the same conclusions as Mendel. De Vries published his work in 1900, first in French then in German. In the French report there was no mention of Mendel, but this was amended by de Vries in the German paper. It is possible that de Vries read Mendel's paper before he published his own, and included Mendel's name in the later printing when he realized that other people also knew about Mendel's work. De Vries may have thought that his own conclusions were superior to Mendel's. ""During the 1880s, de Vries became interested in heredity. In 1889 he published Intracellular Pangenesis, in which he critically reviewed previous research on inheritance and advanced the theory that elements in the nucleus, ‘pangenes’, determine hereditary traits. To investigate his theories, he began breeding plants in 1892 and by 1896 had obtained clear evidence for the segregation of characters in the offspring of crosses in 3:1 ratios. Pour assurer le succès de cette nouvelle version pour la scène du roman de Hugo, son beau-frère Paul Foucher (1810-1870) a entrepris de contenter les enfants du paradis de l'Ambigu-Comique, théâtre récemment ""réinventé"" sous la direction du célèbre Frédéric Lemaître, en leur concoctant un happy end apocryphe… Sans doute ne tenait-il pas à prendre autant de risques qu'au temps déjà lointain (1829) où il avait remanié une pièce de jeunesse inédite du même Hugo, Aby Robsart, démesurément shakespearienne, qu'avec l'accord de l'auteur, l'adolescent avait fait jouer sous son nom: un désastre, dans lequel Hugo avait finalement eu la générosité d'assumer sa part de responsabilité. Foucher n'en était pas moins devenu depuis une plume reconnue, synonyme de succès. Très bel exemplaire, parfaitement établi par René Aussourd. Les fragiles couvertures sont dans un remarquable état de conservation. Bound uncut w. the orig. front wrapper in a very nice private hcalf w. raised bands and gilt ornamentations on back (Petersen & Petersen). First blank leaf partly pasted on to inside of front wrapper. Apart from a bit of soiling to front wrapper, an excellent copy.‎ ‎The rare Haag-edition, printed the same year as the first edition (Paris, 1831), which is ""importante et rare"" (Carteret I:403). ""Marion de Lorme"" is one of Hugo's early works and the first play to be accepted for production under Hugo's own name. The work portrays the French monarchy - a controversial topic at the time - and due to this portrayel being far from flattering, the work was censored and banned. Rare with the orig. wrapper and in uncut condition. On the verso of the first blank leaf is a contemporary handwritten inscription, stating that the previous owner (Ch. Deiters) met with Gustave Doré: ""Ch. Deiters/ a. Utrecht en Hollande (pour 26 Stuver)/ ee XI Septbr 1833 (Hotel de Bellevue)/ vers les IX heures (au soir) - jaret/ a partir pour Bois et Duv (?)"" avec/ Gustave D."" The book has a very impressive Danish provenance. It has been in the libraries of some of the most important Danish bookcollectors and bears the ex libri of K.F. Revue littéraire qui, de juillet 1823 à juin 1824, fut l'""organe officiel du premier romantisme français"" (Jules Marsan). C'est à la persévérance d'Émile Deschamps qu'on doit d'avoir doté d'une vitrine à sa mesure ce cénacle qui regroupait des écrivains dont Nodier -on se réunit dans son salon de l'Arsenal-, Guttinguer, Desbordes-Valmore, Guiraud, Baour-Lormian, D. Gay, Vigny et, surtout, Victor Hugo. Asselineau précise qu'alors que les défenseurs de l'orthodoxie classique fondaient de leur côté Le Mercure du XIXesiècle, ""c'est là, vraiment, le moment des grandes démonstrations, les manifestes vont se succéder, préludes de la bataille qui aboutira à la préface de Cromwell et à la représentation d'Hernani."" Dans La Muse française, le jeune Hugo publie 7textes inédits, dont 2poésies: - A mon père (livraison 3), - La Bande noire (livraison 7). Les textes en prose sont principalement des critiques, mais pas uniquement: - Quentin-Durward de Walter Scott (livraison 1), - Essai sur l'indifférence de Lamennais (livraison 2), - Sur Voltaire, fragment (livraison 6), - Éloa ou la Sœur des Anges de Vigny (livraison 11), - Sur Georges Gordon, Lord Byron (livraison 12). Le dernier, de 1824, constitue ainsi un superbe hommage de Hugo à Lord Byron suite à l'annonce de sa mort tragique en Grèce. Les poèmes et critiques de Hugo, pour la plupart, ne seront pas réédités à l'identique. Quand ces poèmes et morceaux en prose seront réimprimés dans d'autres publications comme Odes et ballades ou Littérature et philosophie mêlées, ce sera au prix d'altérations, certes voulues par l'auteur mais parfois très importantes et de nature à brouiller le propos initial. De tels changements s'expliquent en partie par la rapide maturation du talent de Hugo, encore très jeune: à peine vingt-et-un ans à la fondation de la revue! Ils nous éclairent cependant aussi souvent sur l'évolution progressive de ses idées politiques… L'adulation vouée au Chateaubriand du Génie du christianisme se modère quelque peu, des piques contre Bonaparte disparaissent -avant de ressurgir plus tard ailleurs, et pour des raisons fort différentes!- et l'idée de la primauté de l'art sur la politique, présente déjà dans La Muse française, paraît par la suite prendre encore plus le pas sur l'engagement enflammé au service de la cause légitimiste. Le détail des modifications -parfois suppression de passages entiers- est donné par Dubois dans les notes des pages 150 à 166 de sa Bio-bibliographie de V. Hugo 1802-1825. Bel exemplaire en reliures d'époque. Des rousseurs à certaines livraisons en raison de la mauvaise qualité du papier, petite déchirure marginale à une page du tomeI. Confidentielle, cette édition précéda d'un an la nouvelle parution de l'ode dans le recueil qui allait lui emprunter son titre, et lui procurer cette fois une audience enthousiaste. Après le Hugo légitimiste, avant le Hugo républicain, il y eut le Hugo (presque) bonapartiste qui loin de brocarder encore ""Napoléon le Petit"" rêvait pour la France du retour de la gloire que lui avait procurée l'oncle de celui-ci -son propre père, le général, n'y avait-il pas eu sa part? On peut dire que l'angle choisi (la chute!) annonce tout de même assez Les Châtiments, et cependant le grand Napoléon, s'il est ici puni de son orgueil, n'est jamais l'ogre dévoreur de son peuple. Il est un César, un Alexandre, un héros romantique foudroyé. L'ode, alors que le futur NapoléonIII croupissait au Fort de Ham, n'avait pourtant rien pour mécontenter le pouvoir alors en place, puisque le Retour des Cendres avait été ordonné par Louis-Philippe. Elle constitue en même temps le tome V de la première édition des œuvres complètes. Recueil de chefs-d'œuvre (André Maurois). Le recueil réunit des poèmes composés de 1830 à 1835, essentiellement pendant l’automne 1835, alors que Hugo séjournait aux Roches, chez les Bertin. Il contient des pièces politiques dans lesquelles le poète se détache de la monarchie des Bourbons et chante même l’empereur. Hugo célèbre surtout ""ses noces spirituelles et charnelles"" avec Juliette dans 13 poèmes (XIV, XXI à XXIV, XXVI à XXXIII), mais il rend également hommage avec tendresse à son épouse (Date Lilia). Sainte-Beuve, jaloux de cette reconnaissance conjugale, se moqua de ces poèmes, ce qui affecta Adèle. Jolie reliure au chiffre de Jules Marsan, qui le premier entreprit d'écrire l'histoire de l'école romantique. L'exemplaire figure sous le n°268 du catalogue de la Bibliothèque romantique de Jules Marsan vendue les 15 et 16 novembre 1976. Manque le feuillet final contenant la liste des œuvres de Victor Hugo. On sait l'influence considérable et immédiate qu'eut ce roman d'une grande puissance poétique, dont on trouve trace dans, par exemple, le Vingt millelieues sous les mers de Jules Verne: la lutte de l'équipage du Nautilus contre le calmar géant y fait ainsi écho à celle de Gilliatt contre le poulpe… Hommage ou coïncidence, Verne situera l'action de son roman (paru trois ans plus tard) précisément en 1866, donc l'année de cette première édition des Travailleurs de la mer. An impressive gallery of prominent 19th century women and men caricatured and described by the foremost avant-garde artists and writers of the time. Created by writer Félicien Champsaur and illustrator André Gill in 1878 this exceptional literary and satirical review was later directed by Léon Vanier the publisher of the Parnassiens poets from 1885 to 1899. Each issue is a portrait of a contemporary figure in the world of arts and letters politics science or technology. The full set includes 469 monographs written by some of the most provocative voices of the time: Jules Laforgue Gustave Kahn Joris-Karl Huysmans Jean Moréas Félix Fénéon. The only contributor Vanier ever paid for those written portraits was Paul Verlaine famously always short of money. The son of a master bookbinder Hugo Peller 1917-2003 was a Swiss artisan whose skill as a binder was equalled by his talent for teaching; he is cited by some of the foremost designer bookbinders working today as their most influential instructor. Our binding's inlaid and onlaid leather elements odd-numbered gilt dots of various sizes and fillets within an abstracted image are characteristic features of Peller's bookbinding designs. A FLAWLESS COPY.<br/> <br/> This is the superb Descamps-Scrive copy of Hugo's revolutionary play in a binding by one of the great French masters—a bibliopegic achievement that reflects the play with its memorably exuberant and flamboyant style as seen particularly in the intricacy of its highly decorative doublures. When "Hernani" debuted on 25 February 1830 it caused a fierce argument among the audience--between the young Romantics led by Hugo's friend Théophile Gautier and the fans of classical theatrical styles--that became known as the Battle of Hernani. According to the Library of Congress "The clashes lasted several days and marked the triumph of romantic drama which dominated the stages of French theaters for years to come." Gautier would later reminisce: "February 25 1830! This date remains written in the depths of our past in flamboyant characters: the very first performance of Hernani! That evening decided our lives! It was there that we received the impetus which still drives us on after so many years and which will see us through to the end of our career." The binding here is as uninhibited by tradition and as over-the-top dramatic as the play with arresting design motifs inspired by Art Nouveau and Orientalism and with richly colored leathers that both contrast with and complement each other. In her "Bookbinders and their Craft" Prideaux says that the Gruel firm founded in 1811 "has always had the highest reputation . . . for initiative in artistic matters as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements." Our binding stands as testament to the truth of this statement. The Gruel bindery was managed by several family members over the years most famously by Léon Gruel 1841-1923 and the list of binders who trained at the Gruel atelier is the most distinguished in Europe. Our binding was very probably done by Léon in the late 19th century for the famed French bibliophile René Descamps-Scrive 1853-1924 whose collection was as prestigious as Henri Beraldi's. Descamps-Scrive owned the volume in any case as it was auctioned after his death as part of his library at the Parisian gallery Georges Petit in May 1925 where it was lot no. 423 with full-page illustration. Like Beraldi Descamps-Scrive collected beautiful bindings that typified major styles and periods and was known for his insistence on acquiring only volumes in perfect condition. We have sold many fine bindings with elaborately decorated doublures but nothing quite like the ones seen here: they resemble a kind of fiery thicket although formed with rigorous control by a masterly binder.
