Laid in loose is an unpublished 3-page typed manuscript by Hugo Manning with a few holograph corrections ca. 1952 which appears to have been intended as jacket text for a projected edition of 'The Unpossessed Garden'. It includes a quirky punchy author biography and list of works selected reviews and some hilarious text at the end describing himself as 'modest and self-effacing'. The manuscript of 'The Unpossessed Garden' survives at the University of Texas at Austin and appears unpublished. Manning describes it both as an oratorio and as a 'modern poem adhering to the bible narrative but given my own interpretation and conception of the man-woman drama and an attempt to touch the anatomy of desire.' First edition in original light grey cloth stamped in red cloth has some staining and wear; foxing to text; ink inscription of prior owners on front endpaper; no jacket. Gaberbocchus Press hardcover

First edition : one of a small number of copies of the first issue with two sequences of text printed in the wrong order with the two errors "Immortality" for "Immorality" on p.15 and the publisher's corrections slip pasted to the verso of the front wrapper. A presentation copy signed by Hugo Manning and with his five-line inscription explaining that some of these faulty copies were distributed in advance of the corrected and reprinted text the British Library Catalogue note notwithstanding. Loosely inserted is a signed single-page 1976 autograph letter from Manning confirming the gift of this "dud" copy of "my essay on Henry Miller" as a "collector's item" given to him by the publisher Alan Clodd. Demy 8vo 22cm. 32pp. Original white wrappers lettered and decorated in brown; a very good copy with the original envelope addressed by Manning in which the book was sent to the recipient. This translation appeared in "Argentine Anthology of Modern Verse" edited with a preface by Patricio Gannon Buenos Aires 1942. HM."
