The Crown and the Fable: A Poetic Sequence with typed biography
Gaberbocchus Press 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Laid in loose is an unpublished 3-page typed manuscript by Hugo Manning with a few holograph corrections ca. 1952 which appears to have been intended as jacket text for a projected edition of 'The Unpossessed Garden'. It includes a quirky punchy author biography and list of works selected reviews and some hilarious text at the end describing himself as 'modest and self-effacing'. The manuscript of 'The Unpossessed Garden' survives at the University of Texas at Austin and appears unpublished. Manning describes it both as an oratorio and as a 'modern poem adhering to the bible narrative but given my own interpretation and conception of the man-woman drama and an attempt to touch the anatomy of desire.' First edition in original light grey cloth stamped in red cloth has some staining and wear; foxing to text; ink inscription of prior owners on front endpaper; no jacket. Gaberbocchus Press hardcover
