A very scarce edition of this English language translation of the Victor Hugo novel first published in 1866 dealing with the impact of the Industrial Revolution upon the Isle of Guernsey where the author spent fifteen years in exile.This is from Routledge's Railway Library a popular and inexpensive reprint series designed to be sold to travellers on the fast growing Victoria railway network sold through W. H. Smith's stalls on station platforms. Over a period of 50 years 1277 books were published in this series. Most books were published as pictorial hardbacks often in the recognisable 'yellowback' format.Featuring contemporary advertisements to both pastedowns and free endpapers and a further advertisement to the rear board.This work has been dated c1890 via the publisher's advertisements. In the publishers original pictorial paper covered boards. Bumping to extremities and spine head and tail. Some light wear to tail of front and rear joints. Volume I first edition Volume II second edition and Volume III first edition of Victor Hugo's Toilers of the Sea in the publisher's original cloth bindings. Bookplate to the front paste down of each volume. Toilers of the Sea Les Travailleurs de la mer is dedicated to the island of Guernsey where Victor Hugo spent 15 years in exile. Les Travailleurs de la Mer is set just after the Napoleonic Wars and deals with the impact of the Industrial Revolution upon the island. It is the story of a man who attempts to win the approval of his beloved's father by rescuing his ship intentionally marooned by its captain who hopes to escape with a treasure of money it is transporting. 16 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volume III. In publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally smart though there is some bumping to the spine boards and extremities of all three volumes. The hinges to Volume I are starting but reasonably firm. Internally firmly bound. Contrary to what bibliographers indicate Clouzot Carteret and Vicaire the print run on this paper does not appear to be 15 copies but indeed 10 as mentioned on the justification page. This paper was moreover upon publication at 40 francs the most expensive China paper being only 20 francs and Holland 15. Half chocolate brown morocco binding spine with five raised bands gilt date at foot pebbled paper boards combed paper endpapers and pastedowns bookplate pasted on a pastedown original wrappers preserved top edge gilt binding signed P.
