The story An untried British regiment is sent to the front in a border war and finds itself faced by a fanatical band of Muslim fighters powerful hairy men armed with long knives. The British are driven back and retreat in panic and confusion but two young drummer boys Jakin and Lew are left stranded on the battlefield between the armies. Fortified by blind courage and canteen rum they decide to shame their regiment into returning to the battle. They march up and down across the front to the strains of "The British Grenadiers". The regiment turns back and advances on the enemy this time successfully. The boys are killed but the battle is won. Garm - A Hostage - First published in the Saturday Evening Post of 23 December 1899 then in Pearson's Magazine of January 1900. It was collected in Actions and Reactions in 1909 where it was accompanied by the poem �The Power of the Dog� ORG Verse number 931 vol 1. It is also to be found in Collected Dog Stories and anthologies of various dates. 007 ".007" was originally subtitled "The Story of an American Locomotive". It is a story in which steam locomotives are characters ".007" is the serial number of the protagonist. The story first appeared in Scribner's Magazine in August 1897 and was collected with other Kipling stories in The Day's Work 1898. The Maltese Cat - This story first appeared in the Pall Mall Gazette on 26th and 27th June 1895 and in the Cosmopolitan Magazine July 1895. It was collected in The Day�s Work 1898 in Scribner�s Edition Volume XIV in the Sussex Edition Volume VI page 263 and in the Burwash Edition Volume VI. It was also reprinted as a single story Macmillan London 1936. Wee Willie Winkie - This tale first appeared in The Week�s News of 28 January 1888 and then in the same year as the first of the four stories in Volume VI of the Indian Railway Library to which it gave its name. It was collected in "Wee Willie Winkie and Other Stories" in 1895 and in numerous subsequent reprints of that collection. The Ship that Found Herself - This story was first printed in the Idler Magazine Great Britain for December 1895 and U.S.A. for January 1896; also in McClure�s Magazine in March 1896. It was collected in The Day�s Work in 1898 and in numerous later editions of that collection. It is to be found in Volume XIII of Scribner�s Edition Volume VI of both the Sussex Edition and Burwash Edition. In some editions including the standard Macmillan it has an eight-line verse heading beginning �We now held in captivity� ascribed to "Song of the Engines" see The Birthday Book December 24th 1896. It is collected in Poems 1929 and DV 1940 under �Chapter Headings�. It appears twice in the Sussex and Burwash editions. The story is of a new merchant steamer a cargo tramp the ocean-going equivalent of John Masefield�s later �Dirty British Coaster� and how she �limbered up� and became inured to her calling. Some have regarded it as an allegory but we may leave that aspect to readers for no such construction is needed to give point to the story. My Personal Experience with a Lion - first published in The Ladies� Home Journal in January 1902 and was an account of Kipling's experience in raising a lion cub which he named 'Sullivan". A delightful tale written with great affection. It appeared in 'The Kipling Reader for Elementary Grades' as 'How to Bring up as Lion'. Moti Guj - Mutineer - First published in Mine Own People in the United States of America in 1891 and collected in Life�s Handicap the same year. The story: Moti Guj is a magnificent and powerful elephant who works clearing forest land for planting coffee. He is owned by a dissipated mahout Deesa to whom he is devoted. One day Deesa asks for leave to go off on a drunken orgy and the planter allows him ten days off provided Moti Guj will work while he is away. Deesa tells the elephant that for ten days he must work for Chihun another mahout and departs. To the planter's surprise Moti Guj works well � for ten days. On the eleventh day however he refuses to do his daily stint and wanders around the camp looking for Deesa and generally causing trouble. At dawn the following day Deesa returns has a joyous reunion with Moti Guj and � to the planter's astonishment � they get back to work clearing stumps. Illustrations by Paul Durand. Deesa dit � l'�l�phant que pendant dix jours il doit travailler pour Chihun un autre mahout et s'en va. � la surprise du planteur Moti Guj fonctionne bien - pendant dix jours. Le onzi�me jour cependant il refuse de faire son travail quotidien et se prom�ne dans le camp � la recherche de Deesa et cause g�n�ralement des probl�mes. A l'aube le lendemain Deesa revient a une r�union joyeuse avec Moti Guj et - � l'�tonnement du planteur - ils se remettent au travail pour nettoyer les souches.
