Hodder & Stoughton 1913 Excellent edition of The Song of the English which was extracted from 'The Seven Seas' and made into this lovely edition with stunning illustrations by William Heath Robinson. Original decorated navy blue cloth cover and darkened spine. 16 masterly color plates on art paper and tipped in including frontispiece with captioned pages opposite each one. Binding with some wear contents pretty clean and complete no colouring in of the many black and white drawings no bent corners. Former owner's neat signature and blind stamp to prelims. Still firm binding text block trimmed on top and untrimmed on the leading edge and base. A large book may require extra postage according to destination. A Book Of Words - BOUGHT AT BATEMANS the writers home.
Macmillan 1928 The youngest ever Nobel Prize For Literature winner and the first English language recipient; as if that was not enough Kipling was of course a vastly popular writer all over the world comparable to today's movie stars. This Near Fine first edition and world first printing of the collected speeches and addresses from 1928 is in exceptional condition although it lacks its jacket. The corners are undamaged the binding unblemished the spine is not faded and the gilded elephant on the red cover is bright. But the most important aspect of this copy is of course the signature of Rudyard Kipling beautifully signed on the front end paper which was often his chosen signing page. The signature is in ink which has faded over the years. This copy was bought at Batemans the home of Rudyard Kipling and now administered by the National Trust and there can be no better provenance. It is in the familiar scarlet cloth livery of Macmillan and the title page is in two colours. A very rare signature indeed on an uncommon book in great collectable condition.
