These two volumes discuss the experiences of the Irish guards from 1914 to 1918. The point of view is the battalions with the assistance of Regimental diaries private letters and documents. In his beautiful way Kipling transports the reader back to that sunny summer of 1914 when the rampant optimism gave way to the horror of the trenches. Kipling lost his son at Loos his remains not identified until 1992. It is his ability to write with power that makes this an eminently readable copy even now in the 21st century. Volume II also contains on pages 217-284 an index appendix A; Officers who were killed; B. NCO's who were killed and C. the award from the Victoria Cross to the many distinguished service medals.
