Édition originale. Tirage limité à 200 exemplaires. . Le plus réussi et le plus rare des livres illustrés par Charles Ricketts avec de superbes compositions préraphaélites. Tous les exemplaires furent placés dans une exquise reliure éditeur en vélin doré ; elle est ici dans un état de fraîcheur exceptionnel protégé dans une chemise en feutre et un étui-cigare des ateliers londoniens de Riviere & Son. Le Sphinx est un long poème composé de stances dédié à Marcel Schwob « en signe d'amitié et d'admiration ». Oscar Wilde y célèbre la beauté sensuelle de la créature mythologique et la grandeur qu'elle symbolise. Elle fut imprimée en trois couleurs vert noir et sanguine avec les caractères de l'artiste qui avait fondé en 1893 une private press à Chelsea ; cette dernière la Vale Press publia quelque 75 ouvrages. Ricketts créa des polices de caractères des initiales et bordures qui mêlaient les influences du Moyen Âge de la Renaissance à l'imagerie contemporaine. Les illustrations et les innovations typographiques sont considérées comme un chef-d'oeuvre et font de l'ouvrage un des sommets du livre illustré de la fin du XIXe siècle. Contrairement aux private presses classiques la Vale Press confia l'impression des livres à un imprimeur la Ballantyne Press où une presse lui était réservée mais un incendie en 1899 détruisit l'atelier et une grande partie des ouvrages non encore vendus périrent. Précieux exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque David Kirkpatrick Este Bruce avec ex-libris gravé. Il est un descendant de Robert Bruce d'Écosse ; il fut l'un des grands ambassadeurs des États-Unis : en France de 1949 à 1952 en Allemagne de l'Ouest de 1957 à 1959 et au Royaume-Uni de 1961 à 1969. Kirkpatrick remplit également la mission de premier émissaire des États-Unis auprès de la République populaire de Chine de 1973 à 1974 et termina sa carrière de diplomate comme ambassadeur et représentant permanent des États-Unis auprès de l'OTAN de 1975 à 1976. Karl Blossfeldt 1865-1932 achieved overnight fame in the late 1920s with the first publication of his photographs of plants. Those photographs which revealed the inner structures of the organic forms immediately made him a pioneer of New Objectivity―an innovative movement in art and photography of the 1920s and 1930s. Blossfeldt however was neither a trained photographer nor a botanist. He was a sculptor and art professor who did his photographic work to generate teaching material for his students.The publication of this book is the result of an extraordinary event―the 1997 discovery in Blossfeldt's estate of sixty-one previously unknown collages in virtually mint condition of photographic contact prints arranged on large cardboard sheets. Blossfeldt apparently used these to study the relation and similarity of the photographs and to compare them graphically and aesthetically. On some Blossfeldt had made marks or handwritten notations. Others show lines for cropping. The collages published here for the first time unveil a hidden treasure of modern photography and cast fresh light on the systematic approach Blossfeldt used in his photographic studies. All collages are reproduced in four colors. Introducing the book is an essay by Swiss art historian Ulrike Meyer-Stump a Lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts.
