Tiny rub across the spine head. Nick to rear corner at head.; The Nightingale and the Rose was first published in 1888 as a short story in Wilde's The Happy Prince and Other Tales. Ostensibly a collection of children's stories it also contained a large dose of adult moralizing and Wilde's trademark cynicism. Copy 63 of a limited edition of 400 and numbered in ink on the colophon. Unpaginated. Paginated blank141blank. The story tells of the Student smitten with love for a professor's daughter. She will not dance with him unless he gives her a red rose when there are only white rose trees growing. A nightingale hears this and vows to help the Student saying “Here at last is the true lover.” A rose tree tells the nightingale that only she can produce a red rose by singing a song all night for the rose tree impaling herself on a thorn staining a white rose red with blood and dying thereafter. The nightingale explains this to the Student and sacrifices herself in this manner yielding a red rose. The Student gives the professor's daughter the rose but she rejects the rose and him in favor of another man saying ".the Chamberlain’s nephew has sent me some real jewels and everybody knows that jewels cost far more than flowers.” and additionally insulting the Student. Ultimately the story yields Wilde's cynicism. The Student had not the heart to hear the love and sentiment in what the Nightingale told him and did not appreciate the sacrifice. Both Student and daughter were fixated on the superficial and not real love. The Student abandons the idea of love because it's not logical and returns to his studies. Wood engravings by Howard Simon are printed in black blue and peach ink. The small engraving on the title page depicts the Nightingale on a stylized rose tree growing a single rose among sparse pointed leaves. The large engraving in the first page echoes the same rose and leaves motif with a mildly erotic depiction of the Student offering a rose to the daughter. The front cover has a slate blue stylized rose and leaf with argentum title and stars. Howard Simon 1902-1979 was a notable painter illustrator woodcut artist and a frequent illustrator of Windsor Press books. "Printed from hand-set type by the Brothers Johnson at the Windsor Press." On laid watermarked Arches paper. Text block trimmed at the head only. Sewn into dark variegated green paper over boards. Brothers Cecil and James Johnson founded Windsor Press in the early 20th Century and exemplified the fine press work of the San Francisco area. Scarce in the market this copy is quite clean and in Very Good condition.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 15 pages . Windsor Press hardcover‎
