Diary Beatrice E. Smither
One year in the life of a young woman educated socially active and employed in the years following suffrage
Richmond VA 1925. One year diary bound by Fidelity and Deposit Company of Richmond. Comprised of 271 pages handwritten by Beatrice E. Smither a young woman working in a law firm five years after the 19th Amendment's passage. The majority of passages are written in longhand with scattered shorthand throughout. Beatrice's daily diary reveals an incredibly active life and gives a strong sense of the kind of independence that women of her generation were experiencing. Employed in Richmond Virginia at the law firm of Williams and Mullen founded 1909 and still operating Beatrice Smithers is the embodiment of a flapper. Throughout the year of 1925 she reports daily on her work at the law firm where she frequently stays til 6:00 or later on meetings of her multiple church and civic clubs and on her romances with two men Cy and George who rival for her affection. She even reports on political events such as board local and presidential elections in which she participates. The diary is clearly a safe space for her where she can sort out ideas and emotions. "Quite busy at work today" she reports on January 5 "Lunch at noon with Mae Burton - at night trying to work up some plan for Junior Council Meeting - Cy talks to me early - does not bring me home from work - John D. calls me up and wants me to attend a meeting of the Sunday Night Club." In entries like these we get a sense of the busy rhythm of Beatrice's days. In others we get a sense of her ability to manage and lead groups and how seriously she takes community engagement. "Leave office at 5:25 to ride up.to Public Library & look over same & I take out our membership card to get a book for my Sunday leading exercise -- Mae brings me home & I work for awhile on preparing to lead Sunday morning exercises" she reports on January 22. We also get regular glimpses into Beatrice's private life and her family. "Dear Diary" she writes on February 18 "As if we are not all worried enough to kill us with father's craziness drunk nearly all the day since he got back from Westbrook I had to turn my ankle while walking." The next day "Father home - who is again as usual drunk with liquor and not himself." The addiction issues in her family drive Beatrice to pursue financial independence -- and to think seriously about her choice of a mate as she debates between Cy "so dear and devilish" and George "so sweet and faithful"; she even despairs "I wonder if I am a traitor to my own self loving two men at the same time" and "I wish I could die!.Everything is a mess." There are even entries that cryptically suggest she had a pregnancy scare or was using the rhythm method to avoid it: "Menstruation begins" October 8 and "Menstruation ends" Oct 14 the only two such in the whole book. In the course of the year she ultimately breaks with Cy gets engaged to stable and supportive George and decides to continue working. A densely packed manuscript with research potential including but not limited to women's employment history gender studies post-suffrage literature the history of reading the history of social and civic clubs in America the history of tourism paleography family addiction and mental illness and sexuality. unknown

Diary Gladys M. Barber
1908 Travel Diary of an American woman college graduate documenting her trans-continental experiences of art music and contemporary politics
Germany 1908. Black sheep over stitched card with some rubbing to the spine and edges. Text block reinforced internally with paper tape. Measures 3 x 5 inches. Comprised of 72 densely handwritten pages documenting the European travel experiences of Gladys M. Barber who earned her A.B. from Boston University in 1905 and would return soon after as a Master's Candidate. Gladys' narrative style reveals her to be an insightful cultural observer who uses her education to explore the world around her. Traversing the Atlantic landing in Dover and making the passage across the Channel into the Continent Gladys regularly notes social differences between Americans and Germans. "It did seem very strange for businessmen to be leisurely occupying themselves with coffee and cigars in almost mid-afternoon.Amusing things to me were the keeping on the gentleman's right regardless of whether I was on the outside of the sidewalk; talking across an immovable woman in the electric or getting out of the bus first." Learning to navigate the different mores Gladys notes that "it makes a girl feel very independent and grown up." In addition to her immersion into the daily activities of people in Berlin Potsdam and Dresden Gladys consistently visits museums and galleries and she attends concerts and operas. She attends a performance of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream a performance of Wilhelm Tell and a Wagner opera conducted by Rudolf Krasselt. She hears a piano performance by Martha Siebold who would later be called "one of the most gifted and proficient pianists of the day" Musical Courier 1916 and who Gladys described as a player "with great control ability and good interpretation." As she examines the nude masterpieces of Rubens at the National Gallery she comments with amusement that "upon noticing that we were only females in the room we laughingly whispered 'Do you think this is a proper place for us'" She also reveals her knowledge of contemporary Continental art when she compares the landscape of the countryside to "the famous paintings by the Dutch painter" Einar Wegener Lili Elbe. These experiences lead Gladys to think about the larger world and its politics. She considers how artifacts reached some of the German museums following the Boxer Rebellion and Schliemann's problematic excavation of Troy. She reports in rich detail about the spectacle of the marriage parade for Kaiser Wilhelm's son and she documents being present at the Kaiser's departure "from his palace in his auto to go for a trip in Count Zeppelin's air ship" -- sights that she positions as historically important. She even notes in one entry "Wm. H. Taft elected Pres. of the U.S. It will seem very strange to go back home under another president." For an educated woman without the right to vote the transition strikes her as significant. According to Boston University records Gladys M. Barber earned her A.B. in 1905; and by 1911 she was listed among Master's Candidates at the same school. Her European travel as recorded in this diary falls squarely between her two degrees suggesting that first-hand experience of the world was a supplement to higher education rather than a break from it. An exceptionally rich resource with research possibilities including but not limited to women's education contemporary approaches to modern art global politics leading up to WWI travel and tourism history German art and architecture the history of fashion and the history of music. unknown

Diary Katharine Shepard
A nurse and women's club leader keeps a diary in the year American women gained suffrage
Newberryport MA 1920. Standard Daily Journal in original blue cloth binding with title to front board. Containing 365 pages of daily entries plus 56 additional pages of notes largely monthly expense accounts and recipes to be made. Documenting the life of Massachusetts nurse and women's club leader Katharine Shepard this densely packed diary gives insight into the activities ideas and feelings of an active woman who along with the female population of the U.S. had just obtained the right to vote. Everything about the present diary shows that Katharine was an active intelligent ambitious and civically engaged individual. 45 years old at the time of this journal she suffers no fools at work or in her clubs; and she values the balance she has accomplished between her intense work and activist commitments and self-care. Both front and rear pastedowns handle the overload of her notes on accounts contacts and recipes. Internally she diligently documents all 365 days of her year. She discusses the nursing lesson plans classes students and lectures she gives; she records and reflects on speaking appointments at the Roxbury Women's Club Amherst College Girls' City Club and the Cambridge Women's Club; she keeps track of various bills and legislation she is in support of or wants to assist in banning in her state. As the presidential election nears as expected she has educated herself chosen a side and thrown her weight behind her candidate attending a Republican rally in October and noting on November 2 that she has voted for the first time. In the midst of all this Katharine never lets us forget that she is very human. She gets tired and temperamental describing a disagreeable committee member as "looking like a potato" she pores over the cost and effort of shopping for nursing uniforms and she revels in opportunities for personal care such as getting her hair and nails done on days off. She is a real modern woman -- employed self-supporting and responsible with her finances determined to be a good worker citizen and friend invested in caring for herself. A rich document with research possibilities including but not limited to the history of nursing and nursing education the history of women's clubs leading into suffrage cookery and food supply chain the finances of working women the work-life balance of women women's early approaches to national voting speeches and civic engagement and the role of women's groups in single women's lives. unknown
