Frontispiece. This third volume tells the story of the Abbé's journey back to France with dispatches sent by de la Haye the French Viceroy from St. Thomé. His spirit of adventure and love of travel for its own sake are clearly evinced. He might have reached France more easily and quickly by taking his passage in the 'Soleil d'Orient' which left Surat on January 4 and arrived at La Rochelle on July 12 1674; but in spite of his troublesome experiences in the Mediterranean the Syrian Desert and the Persian Gulf on his outward journey he preferred to return from Surat by the same route in reverse. As a result this part of the Journal gains immensely in interest. ‎Lancaster PA 1856. Folio broadside. 495 x 330 mm. 19 1/2 x 13 inches. Text printed in five columns. Matted. Several tiny holes affecting a few words. Substantial reportage with text printed in six point type of an anti-Fremont pro-Buchanan rally held at the home of James Buchanan. This was billed as the "Greatest Political Meeting Ever Held in Pennsylvania" with 50000 people in attendance. The sons of Henry Clay and Daniel Webster were present and spoke on behalf of the Democratic State Ticket. The speeches dealt chiefly with the results of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the resistance of the Abolitionists to it noting that Connecticut was the first ahead of the Keystone State to vote to arrest the tide of disunionism fomented by the abolitionists. Democratic speakers favored the preservation of the Union an end to sectionalism and the protection of the constitution. Refusing to bear arms against his mother country, he was placed in charge of the ammunition in the main laager of General Piet Cronje, Deputy Commandant General of the Republic. Not only was he opposed to Kruger and Krugerism but he was incensed at being commandeered. He criticizes much of what he sees and hears about Cronje.
