Protestation des personnels du journal Berliner Tageblatt contre l’occupation de ses locaux par le groupe Spartacus (Insurrection allemande de 1919.) Retranscription très approximative (le tract étant difficile à déchiffrer, car imprimé en caractères gothiques) : BERLINER TAGEBLATT. Der Spartakusbund hat am Sonntag Abend die Betriebsgebäude des Verlages Rudolf Mosse mit einer grossen Zahl bewaffneter Unhänger besetzt und verhindert seitdem mit Waffengewalt das Erscheinen der von diesem Verlage herausgegebenen Blätter « Berliner Tageblatt », Berliner Bolts Zeitung » und « Berliner Morgen Zeitung ». Gegen diese brutale Bergewaltigung erheben ämtliche Arbeiter, Ungestellte und Redakteure des Betriebes den Schärfften protest. Sie haben einütig jedes pattieren mit den Spartakus Leuten abgelehnt ! Das Deutsche Bolf hat ein Recht auf seine Presse, das es sich nicht nehmen lassen darf. Berlin ist nun schon seit fünf Zagen von jedem politischen zusammenwang mit der übrigen Welt abgeschmitten, und das in einer Zeit, in der die grössten Bundscheidungen für Deutschlands Zukunft fallen. Wir stehen unmittelbar vor den Wahlenzur Nationalversammlung, aber die Wahlarbeit wird unterbungen. Die Beratungen über den Prässminarfrieden beschaftigen die Ganze Welt , aber die Deutsche Reichhauptstadt erfährt nichts davon. In den Strassen todt der Aufruhr, aber die Bevölterung fordert vergebens das sie über die Ereignisse unterrichtet wird. Durch den Gewaltstreich des Spartacus bundes werden tausende von Ungestellten und Arbeitern ihres Rechtes auf Arbeit beraubt. Siese Zustände sind unerträglich und schmachvoll. Jeder Berliner Einwohner, er stehe politisch wie er wlle, wird mit uns für die Freiheit der Presse eitreten. Einwohner Berlins, mit der Preissfreiheit geht die politische Freiheit verloten. Mit ihrer Unterdrucktung werdet ihr den Terrorristen willenlos ausgetiebert. Es geht um die Freiheit der Presse ! Es geht um das Recht auf Arbeit ! Mourning Journal
1850s Life and death Journal begun by a Girl and Finished by her Family
Handwritten journal Notebook recording death dates and obituaries for a teenage girl in 1857 upstate New York and others in her community. 96 pages numbered in pencil with 60 pages of content. Originally owned by Anna Arthur a school girl the initial pages record daily life including her daily interests in shopping and fashion. However Anna's contributions to the journal end abruptly in 1857 when she died suddenly "of brain congestion". The remainder of her journal is carried out by a family member likely her mother. Anna's obituary is pasted in. "Died. In this Village of Congestion of the brain after a short illness of but two days Miss Anna Arthur aged 17." Followed with handwritten pencil inscription with date of death Dec. 23 1857. "Among the deaths published in our paper this week is that that of Miss Anna Arthur only daughter of Charles Artur of this village. She was in the enjoyment of usual health until a day or two preceeding sic her death and no alarm was experienced by herself or family at the slight illness which suddenly terminated in Congestion of the brain. Miss Arthur was but seventeen years of age and was a young lady of much promise. -- The mysterious Providence which in the morning of life has removed from earth a darling child falls heavily upon the heads of a fond father and mother and a large circle of youthful friends and acquaintances. Truly we are as the flowers of the valley flourishing to day to-morrow no more! Happy visions rise before us our hearts are joyous no clouds dim the bright future when without a moments warning unseen and unknown the messenger of death lays his blightin touch upon the loved one and our hearts bleed with sorrow and refuse to be comforted."<br/><br/>Also includes a poem "Lines on the Death of Miss Anna Arthur" printed in an Essex County newspaper on Christmas day. "I gazed on a flower that modestly boomed On the breast of a maiden whom Death ahd entombed On her breast was a rose but not spirit was there.The roses that filled with their scented perfume The air which the mortals so softly did breathe: Were naought when compared witht the exquisite bloom Of those flowers that sigh where no spirit can grieve." The poems is signed off from Keeseville a small hamlet in the Adirondacks of New York. Followed by a handwritten poem "A Dirge". Mr. Serjeant Ballantine William Ballantine Serjeant-at-Law lawyer and author. Substantial Autograph Letter Signed praising 'a new family paper called "The English Resident"' with regard to 'English sojourners' in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
'Boulogne s/m June 18 1883'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 4to. On first leaf of bifolium. Forty-three lines of neat text. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with a few small closed tears. The author 'Sir' is unnamed but is presumably the 'Editor' referred to in the text. Signed 'Wm Ballantine'. By recipient at head of first page: 'Letter from Mr Sergeant sic Ballantine / United Club -'. Begins: 'I have to acknowledge the receipt of what purports to be a specimen of a new family paper called "The English Resident" & which it is supposed will supply a want existing especially amongs the English sojourners of all descriptions in different French places of resort. & notably at this one of the most favourable watering places of the British people - Those who favoured me with the number in question were aware that for many years of a busy life there has rarely been a year during which upon more than one occasion I have not sought health and recreation uponits shores. I have had abundant opportunities of appreciating its advantages & recognizing its wants and I welcome very heartily the probabl advent of a newspaper which appears to be conducted upon principles likely to render it a very popular addition.' The second half of the letter is in much the same highfallutin tone see reference to 'the freedom and elasticity of Boulogne air' with Ballantine feeling that is is 'impertinent on my part to offer hints to an Editor so evidently experienced as the Gentleman who has supplied news in the number that I have had the pleasure of reading'.
