‎MANUSCRIPT SHIP'S JOURNAL. MORSE Edward George.‎

M. . .mostly on board the barque Sarah of London April 1831-14 March 1833 with additions to 1835. with an engraved view as frontispiece 15 full-page 1 nearly full-page and 1 smaller manuscript maps and coastal profiles plus a small engraved view "Tomb of Napoleon" mounted on 1 page. Lecture Book notes on anatomical lectures by Joseph Constantine Carpue.London November-December 1828. with a matching pair of engravings of a scull on and facing the title-page and 27 pencil and/or ink anatomical drawings including 2 full-page some also with red. 4to 19.5×16.5 cm. Contemporary sheepskin parchment.‎

‎191 ll. Including paste-downs and about 55 blanks.A manuscript ship's journal kept by Edward George Morse Bromyard 1805-Deal post 1850 who no doubt served among other functions as the ship's surgeon. Morse made his earliest dated entries in April 1831 at the island Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and others at Madagascar and its surrounding islands from May to August 1831. Morse provides extensive notes on the natural history topography and people of the Seychelles Madagascar and the neighbouring islands and provides detailed maps of many of the islands and coastal areas along with a few coastal profiles. The two manuscripts are written in a single album of laid paper. Morse used it 1828 to take notes when he attended the London lectures on anatomy and blood circulation by the innovative surgeon Joseph Constantine Carpue who had pioneered facial reconstructive surgery by introducing ancient Indian techniques. He was famous for illustrating his lectures with chalk drawings which no doubt served as the models for the anatomical illustrations in Morse's notes. A few clippings and hand-written notes have been inserted. unknown‎

‎Manuscript Diary. Craighill WP. W. P.‎

‎A Virginian who served the Union: The 1860 diary of William Price Craighill while assistant professor of engineering at West Point.‎

‎<p>Manuscript Diary for 1860 by William Price Craighill while assistant professor of engineering at the United States Military Academy West Point New York as recorded in Clayton's Duodecimo Diary for 1860. 24 mo 5.25" x 3.5" 366 pp. providing daily entries from January 1 to December 31 1860 mostly in ink occasionally pencil followed by 12 pp. of accounts reflecting seemingly expenses. Original limp black roan with fold-over flap. All edges gilt.</p><p> Binding rubbed one inch loss at the top of the spine split & nearly separated at the flap. Internally Very Good save slight toning occasional minor smudging & sporadic foxing.</p><p> William Price Craighill1833 - 1909 born Charles Town Virginia now West Virginia graduated second in his class at West Point in 1853. Appointed brevet second lieutenant he served in Charleston South Carolina where he superintended the construction of Fort Sumter Savannah Georgia & in the Florida Keys before beginning an assignment as assistant to Joseph Gilbert Totten then Chief of Engineers United States Army.</p><p> Promoted to first lieutenant Craighill began a four-year tenure at West Point from 1859 to 1863 as assistant professor of engineering. From 1862 forward he was on field duty initially as chief engineer to General George W. Morgan Army of the Ohio in defense of Cumberland Gap. He was described in a report by Morgan as <b><i>"an officer of distinguished merit … thoroughly informed on all subjects connected with the art of war. He would make an able chief of staff or fill with high credit any other position to which he may be assigned and deserves a much higher grade than he now holds."</i></b></p><p> Craighill was promoted to captain in March 1863 lieutenant-colonel in March1865 major in November 1865 & continued his service in various posts within the office of the Chief of Engineers for the next 25 years. In 1895 he was appointed Chief of Engineers by President Grover Cleveland & retired two years later with the rank of brigadier general.</p><p> An unusually diligent diarist Craighill's journal comprises daily entries for the entirety of 1860 written mostly from West Point but clearly from other locations as well Washington. Collectively the entries provide a unique record of life at West Point just prior to the Civil War. Varying from the mundane to quite interesting a sampling is transcribed below:</p><p> Saturday January 7th 1860</p><p><b><i> "After breakfast this morning I walked up to the hotel and then to the examination hall. Finding my sections would not be up today I walked across the river on the ice and took the cars for Newburgh where I made some purchases of crockery which seem necessary to our comfortable housekeeping. My neighbor Holabird has a very sick child & I have just returned from going after the doctor. The child has the worst kind of croup. It's snowing tonight which gives a singular context to the intense cold we have lately felt."</i></b></p><p> Thursday April 19th 1860.</p><p><b><i> "We have been in much confusion today all hands being busy packing up for our departure tomorrow. Mary Williams our nurse went to Newburgh last night with the expectation as we supposed of returning early this morning but did not get here until after dark so that I have been nurse pretty much all day."</i></b></p><p> Thursday August 9th 1860</p><p><b><i> "I got up early this morning and took the omnibus for the cars to Baltimore where ____ to see the big ship the Great Eastern now in Annapolis. It was very hot & this with the huge crowd made the day anything but pleasant. I got home about 11 PM."</i></b></p><p> Saturday August 25th 1860</p><p><b><i> "Took the cars early this morning ____ for Baltimore where I was obliged to go to make preparations for passing my colored servants over the rail road to Philadelphia. </i></b><b><i>Took dinner with Frank Thomas. Returned to Washington before sundown ."</i></b> </p><p> Monday December 31 1860</p><p><b><i> "Wrote to Colonel Smith today declining to apply for a place as a commandant of cadets at Virginia Military Institute. Last recitation today until examination closes. </i></b><b><i>Mary's ear was better today. </i></b><b><i>Finished recitation today until after examination. </i></b><b><i>Have written tonight to Wm. Fraser in Charleston."</i></b></p> William Price Craighill‎

‎manuscript; HUNTING; ENGLISH VICTORIAN DIARY‎

‎English Victorian manuscript diary containing the hunting notes of a Pytchley man Charles W. Prescott 1871; amusing not only to the hunting-world‎

‎England 1870s. Hardcover. Very Good. England Kent and Norfolk counties: c. 1871-1874. 8vo 175 x 115mm; 61 numbered pages in the hand of Charles W. Prescott detailing his various hunting excursions around the Kent countryside. Prescotts ownership inscription on front free-endpaper is dated 1871. His entries are easily read and cover Prescotts adventures on hunting hares with a skulk of foxes writing Found another in the same field ran her straight back to Old Park round the pond and the pack hunted her beautifully. Dec. 16 1871. The hunts took place over sprawling village and countryside or as he describes hop-gardens hills and ploughs of land in the Herne Bay area of Kent England. Many entries are headed by recognizable locations; Stroud Park Broomfield Hilsborough Wolston Heath and Chislet Mill and are dated with month and sometimes year. Only a portion of the way full his entries span about three years the first dated: Oct. 19 71 Stroud Park and last March 25 1874. Contemporary black morocco marbled endpapers and marbled endpapers with original brass clasp faint splitting at lower hinge of first few leaves strengthened at endpapers corners rubbed otherwise in very good shape especially considering it was wielded around so much of the Kentish countryside. Prescott makes many personal anecdotes about his day noting things in his surroundings like scent moderate or adding his opinions we could not kill I think we should have but the sun was too hot. Prescott often ends the entries with jotting down the days weather as something like very indifferent but as good as could be expected with a very cold east wind or simply stating Frost. It is evident from Prescotts personal asides that he was a vigilant huntsman quite dedicated to the task. Further personal glimpses reveal a record of his horses charming names including Salt Fish and Molly Malone. At the time Prescott was taking these notes Herne Bay area and the Kentish villages would have been teeming with people. The Victoria era was one of prosperity when elite English folk flocked to popular destinations to partake in their favorite pastimes. From 1873 on in the journal Prescott notes he was hunting with Pytchley by writing their name in parentheses. The Pytchley hunt is an organization originally based in Northamptonshire in formation as early at the 1630s. The organization is still active today. Pytchleys website notes that from 1819-1873 right as Prescott began with Pytchley for one year the Althorp and Pytchley countries were hunted by one pack with a second pack established at Brigstock. Prescott was part of the famous hunt organization at a time when it was amid significant change and expansion. His notes may keep further clue of such growth. While the huntsman himself may be unknown to history the anecdotal evidence in Prescotts diary gives us a glimpse of the Victorian man fond of his sport. <br/><br/> hardcover‎

‎Travel Diary of Raymond Buyse, 1922. Carnet de voyage de Raymond Buyse, 1922. In 1922, a young Belgian ?pedologist' named Raymond Buyse accompanied the famous Dr. Ovide Decroly on a study tour of the United States of America. They met with well-known American professors to learn more about the ?scientific' study of the child and especially about applied American psychology. Buyse noted his impressions of the trip in a diary. These are scribbles, sometimes difficult to decipher, written on loose sheets, held together by a ring binder. They reflect the culture shock experienced by Buyse in confronting this dazzling nation. The young scholar writes in a lively style and with humour about his meetings with the ?great' psychologists and educationalists of that time, visualizing his impressions of the land and the people with little drawings in the text. Here the record of this fascinating scholarly and cultural encounter is published for the first time, both in the original French with an English translation. In their exhaustive introduction Marc Depaepe and Lieven D'hulst explain the historical context of this both personal and intellectual journey to the present-day reader. Livre imprime tete-beche!
