Negro pilots bagged eight German planes south of Rome" "Women will fill 30% of all war industry jobs" Archive of the Pointer's Pup the Onboard Newspaper of the USS West Point Full of Combat Dispatches from WWII
Archive of 22 original issues of the Pointer's Pup printed onboard the U.S.S. West Point between 1942-44 including segments on Black fighter pilots that took down German planes over Italy dispatches from the the North Africa Campaign and news from the domestic war effort. Each issue of the Pointer's Pup are about 4 pages each and are mainly briefing soldiers of the goings on in different theaters of the war. Measuring 13" x 8" with 51 total pages. The USS West Point was a workhorse troop transport ship in commission from 1941-46 that moved troops all throughout the various theatres of war from the Atlantic Coast to the Mediterranean to the South Pacific. During its naval service it carried a total of over 350000 troops which was the largest total of any Navy troopship in service during World War II. On one voyage in 1944 it was able to transport 9305 people. Additionally the troop transport carried Red Cross workers United Nations officials children civilians prisoners of war and U.S.O. entertainers.<br /> <br /> Of particular note in these dispatches is the mention of the exploits of Tuskegee Airmen in the January 30 1944 issue ". the success of the American Negro Fighter Pilots in Italy. the Negro pilots bagged eight German planes south of Rome." These hotshot Black pilots were part of the Tuskegee Airmen umbrella group but belonged to the 99th Fighter Squadron the first of its kind. The 99th went to North Africa in April 1943 and flew its first combat mission against the Italian island of Pantelleria on June 2 1943. Evidently it stayed in the region throughout the fall of 1943 and wreaked havoc on remaining German defenses before the nation fell to Allied control. Among its leadership were Capt. Charles B. Hall the first African-American pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft and Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Davis Jr. was the son of Davis Sr. the Army's first general officer and he followed in his father's footsteps to become the first Black general in the Air Force. Contemporary mentions in surviving mainstream military printed news of the African American fighter squadrons is scarce. There is also a report from Washington that sheds light on women's participation in the domestic war effort noting that "Women will fill 30% of all war industry jobs by the end of 1943. The number of women in non-agricultural work will be 60000 compared with 1400000 in 1941. one out of every six women must be used in war industry or agricultural." In addition there are three "Plan of the Day" documents from aboard the ship that lay out the schedule for crewmembers. Condition issues are generally minor; some chipping small tears and water staining at margins some toning throughout overall in very good condition. A great archive of newspapers printed on a highly impactful vessel detailing some of the most interesting events of WWII. unknown

Anne Frank received a diary on her 13th birthday; only a few weeks later she went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her detailed engagingly personal entries chronicle 25 trying months of claustrophobic life in the attic revealing both the trials of her conditions such as scant food and shabby outgrown clothes and a deep sense of compassion and spiritual courage. With wood-engraved illustrations throughout some folding or double-page wood-engraved or lithographed plates This set lacks many of the supplements as is often the case however a few are present. the final volume does have 8 of the coloured supplements and the earlier volumes have 2. Issues 168- 174 are duplicated./ All items in very good sound & clean condition. This gorgeous item is a virtual window into the rich and burgeoning times in Australia rolling on from the wealth of the goldfields. Bursting with 1000's of engravings many full page and double-page views the collection defines this maturing period of our history from every aspect imaginable - including the Kelly saga Sport Racing Cricket and Football the Exhibitions the City the Country Disasters Flood Fire & Shipwrecks Architecture Theatre Social & Community Events - even the Pacific and New Guinea - a window into the past not matched elsewhere in breadth depth or sheer visual impact. This gathering comprises the most important part of the Sketcher's run went to issue 252 Dec. 1889. In its later issues it turned to Victorian serial romance for much of its content and also many of these later issues were plagued with unsatisfactory acid paper. A single issue of this Upstate New York weekly newspaper which began publication in 1801. This issue contains the text of President Jefferson's Message to Congress of Nov. 8th. In his speech Jefferson discusses relations with foreign powers including the Delaware and other Indian tribes the Louisiana Purchase; the United States Navy; and the federal budget. Critical of Jefferson Croswell would later be tried for libel and defended before the Supreme Court by Alexander Hamilton. The publication of this weekly newspaper would continue through 1807. unknown

A 1940 ISSUE OF THE NIPPON TODAY & TOMORROW . . . MONTHLY PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE . . This journal was part of the foreign propaganda effort by th Japanese to counter act their stiff aggression in China from 1937. The world disapproved of Japan's military force take over of Manchuria China Taiwan and with the KANDA MEMORIAL plans of 'world domination' by Japan were heading southward poised to take over S.E. Asian countries. . The "PRO-PROSPERITY" concept where white colonial men were to be replaced by 'fellow Asians' to prosper together once the colonials were kicked out of Asia & South East Asia by the Japanese. . This magazine was directed to American and Europeans as a way to see another more 'civilized' and 'artistic' Japan and Japanese. . The work is profusely illustrated with 7 color and many black & white photographs of Japanese art & culture. It was issued in English. . CONDITION: This issue is in excellent condition for an item that is nearly 80 years old. It was printed on poor quality paper therefore it is 'toned' as can be expected. . The front and back covers are missing parts the balance has been restored by adding Japanese mulberry Washi hand-made paper to reinforce the edges and to make the work as solid as possible. The work remains fragile but solidly bound and firm. . Given the less than excellent condition this item is sold "as is" and is NOT refundable or returnable.
