Measuring 10" x 6.5" and numbering between 111 and 137 pages each. Published quarterly by the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History which Woodson co-founded in 1915 with Jesse E. Moorland the journal was a foundational institution of Black intellectual life in the early 20th century and helped institutionalize what is now known as Black History Month.<br /> <br /> 1 The July 1943 issue includes Vincent W. Byas’ study of Creole culture in "Ethnologic Aspects of the Martinique Creole"; John Hope Franklin’s early and influential article "Slaves Virtually Free in Ante-Bellum North Carolina" which challenged prevailing understandings of slavery’s legal and social constraints in the South; W. Sherman Savage’s "The Contest over Slavery between Illinois and Missouri" a regional political analysis of antebellum tensions; and Arthur J. Alexander’s examination of the paradoxical role of Northern officials as enslavers in "Federal Officeholders in New York State as Slaveholders 1789-1805."<br /> <br /> 2 The July 1946 issue features Charles W. Cobb Jr. on "The Outlook Regarding State FEPC Legislation" an examination of early efforts to institutionalize anti-discrimination policies; Mozell C. Hill’s sociological survey "The All-Negro Communities of Oklahoma: The Natural History of a Social Movement" documenting Black self-governance and rural sovereignty in the American West; and Mexican anthropologist Gonzalo Aguirre Beltrán’s "Tribal Origins of Slaves in Mexico" which identifies distinct African cultural retentions through the rivers of Guinea and into São Tomé.<br /> <br /> 3 The October 1946 issue opens with the Annual Report of the Director and includes Bernard H. Nelson’s "Confederate Slave Impressment Legislation 1861-1865" which details conscription of Black labor during the Civil War; Marion J. Russell’s "American Slave Discontent in Records of the High Courts" a legal-historical view of enslaved resistance; Bella Gross’ study of "The First National Negro Convention" revisiting the 1830s convention movement; and John A. Schutz and Maud O’Neil’s "Arthur Holt Anglican Clergyman Reports on Barbados 1725-1733" a window into Caribbean plantation society as observed by a British missionary.<br /> <br /> These three issues together illustrate the scholarly range of The Journal of Negro History under Woodson's editorship combining archival recovery with contemporary analysis. Authors represented include some of the most influential figures in mid-century African American and African diasporic historiography including John Hope Franklin whose article here anticipates his landmark book From Slavery to Freedom 1947 and Charles W. Cobb Jr. who contributed to civil rights policy development. The Journal was co-founded by Jesse E. Moorland and Carter G. Woodson who also co-founded what is now called Black History Month.
