AS IT APPEARED IN THE PROCESSIONOF THE RECEPTION IN NEW YORK JUNE 16 1860. This is an excellent historical and graphic record of the great events of the first Japanese Embassy to America. The sheet shows two woodcut engravings. From the top shows the scene of the large paddle wheeler ship Alida flying the Japanese flag. Several other smaller ships are out to greet the arriving Japanese. On shore is a contingent of American Soldiers with their cannon firing a salute to the Japanese. The second etching shows the elaborately decorated five-horse car cart. There re three Japanese Samurai seated on the cart along with the treaty contained in a Japanese miniature building. American and Japanese flags adorn the cart. Two New York policemen walk along side the procession. Many onlookers stand by the fence and witness the procession. This is an excellent view of the "GRAND BALL GIVEN IN HONOR OF THE JAPANESE EMBASSY BY THE CITY OF NEW YORK." With the same title as the essay on the front of this full sheet engraved illustration. The preceding is also the title of the essay text which is above the large illustration. This view shows a garden scene with Japanese & American flags crossed in celebration of the Ball. . An American military naval officer is speaking with the diminutive but pet of the ladies Jateishi Onojero or "Tommy" as he was fondly named by the Americans. "Tommy" holds a fan in his left hand he wears the traditional Japanese Kimono Haori jacket and his long Samurai sword is poking out from under the jacket. This is the front page of FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER July 7 1860. The text occupies the center with three columns. This June 6 1860 article covers an historic event regarding the first Japanese Embassy to America. The woodcut engravings: The top shows the Japanese Prince arriving at Willard's Hotel after visiting the President of the United States. He alights from a two-horse drawn carriage. A large cordon of American soldiers line the street with several Japanese bowing down to the Prince. The second and larger illustration below shows the procession of Japanese Ambassadors at the gates of the White House on their way to be presented to the President of the United States. The street is lined with a cordon of American soldiers behind which are a large number of civilians watching. The procession consists of several two-horse drawn carriages followed by a procession of Japanese Samurai retainers on foot. They are assisted by three American. THE LOWER LEFT ENGRAVING: With caption: "JATEISH ONOJERO OR 'TOMMY' THE PET OF THE American LADIES." . This charming engraving shows "Tommy" being entertained and greeted by a group of American ladies and men. Being the youngest member of the Japanese Embassy "Tommy" was the favorite of the ladies. He is shown surrounded by a large number of Americans who are fascinated with his antics. LOWER RIGHT ENGRAVING: With caption: "BOOIEN-YITZE THE JAPANESE ARTIST." Drawn and signed in the plate by N. Orr Co. SC. . This shows a Japanese Samurai with a single sword Katana holding his sketch book in hand we think he was the official Japanese artist for the Embassy. This is a lovely set of three engravings on the front page of the FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER June 6 1860. CONDITION: The sheet is very clean it has two tiny mends on the verso margin else sharp images are sharp and vivid impression. This historic American newspaper dated Saturday June 30 1860 celebrates the historic first visit of the Japanese Embassy to America. . There are three lovely illustrations: two small ones at the top and a large one covering about two-thirds of the page. There are additional texts on the verso. ILLUSTRATION 1: With caption: "THE TRIUMPHAL ARCH AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE GROUNDS OF JAMES GORDON BENNETT ESQ." This shows the American & Japanese flags at the entrance of the Bennett home. . ILLUSTRATION 2: With caption: "ANNOUNCING THE GUESTS TO THE HOSTESS MRS. JAMES GORDON BENNETT." This shows the announcer and the arriving hostess Mrs. James Gordon Bennett. ILLUSTRATION 3: "FETE CHAMPETRE" "RURAL FEAST" GIVEN BY MR. & MRS. JAMES GORDON BENNETT IN HONOR OF THE JAPANESE AT THEIR SUBURBAN RESIDENCE WASHINGTON HEIGHTS MRS. BENNETT RECEIVING THE JAPANESE AMBASSADORS." . This is a lovely and animated scene showing three Japanese ambassadors being greeted by Mr. & Mrs. Bennett. The first Ambassador is Jateish Onojero also spelled: Tataiesi Owasjero by other period American papers fondly called "Tommy" by the American ladiess. He was considered by American ladies as the "favorite" or "pet" of the Japanese Embassy. He was the youngest member of the Embassy. . The lively celebration scene shows "Tommy" being warmly greeted by Mrs. Bennett with a bow and "Tommy" bows in return. He holds his Japanese sword Katana in his left hand. Two other Japanese Ambassadors stand behind him looking on. The group of Mr. & Mrs. Bennett and the three Japanese are surrounded by a large contingent of Americans who observe the historic occasion. TEXT ON THE VERSO: The verso back has two columns of text about the historic event greetings and entertainment of the Japanese: with caption: "Matinee in Honor of the Japanese Princes" given by Mr. & Mrs. Bennett June 21 1860 Fort Washington. A single sheet with two nice and early illustrations. Documenting the historic meeting of the Japanese with the American President Buchanan. This first official Japanese embassy came to America in 1860 to establish a treaty of commerce. THE CAPTION: In the upper right is an illustration with caption: "THE NORIMON OR JAPANESE BOX CONTAINING THE TREATY BORNE TO WILLARD'S HOTEL BY TWO POLICEMEN AND JEALOUSLY WATCHED BY ITS APPPOINTED JAPANESE GUARD." . This shows two American policemen shouldering the small palanquin with a large cordon of American soldiers lining the street. The Japanese Samurai in Hakama sporting two Samurai swords Katana follows in a protective manner he also holds a cane in his right hand. THE CAPTION: The lower or half-page wood engraved illustration has the caption: "INTERVIEW OF THE JAPANESE AMBASSADORS ON WEDNESDAY MAY 16TH 1860 WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE Hon. It is most likely that the two main Japanese Ambassadors standing before the Secretary of State's desk are Sim'mi No-Kami who was the First Ambassador along with the Second Ambassador Muragaki Awadzino a.k.a. Mooragaki Awajisi No-Kami. This is a stunning and historic scene. TEXTS: The front of the sheet has "JAPAN AND THE JAPANESE. THEIR HISTORY SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS LAWS AND CUSTOMS" as the lead article.
