Trevor, John - Albuquerque Journal
The Trevor Gallery: A Public Hanging - Political Cartoons
Albuquerque New Mexco: Albuquerque Journal 1992. First Printing Stated . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 8 1/2" X 11. Trever John. 192 Pages. This is the November 1992 First Printing Edition. There is a very light front cover bottom corner crease. All cartoons are from the Albuquerque Journal and the date of publication is shown at the top of each cartoon. If the editorial page of the Albuquerque Journal is its conscience John Trever is its Jiminy Cricket. Like the top-hatted and umbrella-carrying character Trever perches up on the right shoulder of the editorial page reaching past the many and thoughtful written words found there deflating the mighty championing the lowly. His brush reduces great moments of state and small peccadillos of statesmen to their essence of absurdity in a way that is at once entertainment and serious political commentary. Trever's gift is a fortunate convergence of two separate talents. One is the eye and hand of the visual artist and satirist. The images will communicate their message with style and clarity. Just as important however is the political-social observer's mind out of which his ideas spring. Trever is a voracious consumer of information and ideas. He reads he ponders - he files away. In his file drawers and in his head Trever keeps a running contemporary data base of people and events. When an idea springs out of the day's news Trever usually has the historical context to make it whole. The praise - and the blame - for Trever's topics lie with him alone. That is also true for the viewpoints expressed. While he occasionally seeks a second opinion from his word-bound editorial page colleagues about one sketch or another it is he who decides who will come under his brush and when. To regular readers of the Journal his versatility is obvious. One day he draws world leaders in a situation on the other side of the world; the next it's orange barrels on the Interstate. If he has a preference among local national and international topics it doesn't show in his work. It is easy to become a cynic working the editorial page on a daily newspaper. Trever however retains the belief that things can be changed for the better the sense that he can through his work urge people in power to do the right thing. So sit back and enjoy in the ensuing pages you will be able to revisit the anxieties and indignations of many a bygone issue - and perhaps even glean new insight into what is happening today.

Albuquerque Journal paperback

Wall Street Journal (editors of)
A HISTORY OF ORGANIZED FELONY AND FOLLY. The Record Of Union Labor In Crime And Economics.
New York: 1923. 104 pages. The Introduction explains that "The Wall Street Journal in the fall and early winter of 1922 published a series of thirty-two articles on the record of union labor in the United States during the past twenty years and at the solicitation of many readers these articles are now assembled and issued under chapter headings in the present form. No attempt was made in the articles to discuss theoretical unionism as an economic agency but an exhaustive research was made in order to bring together the many scattered records bearing on the activities of union labor organizations in their relations to the rest of society. The articles were made up for the most part from offical records including records of courts prisons transcripts of offical investigations declarations of public officers etc. the whole being condensed into the smallest possible compass. It was the first attempt to make a comprehensive collection of such records and they in the aggregate form a document of crime that is would be impossible to match in any other field or time of human activity." Including a chapter on "Getting Rid of Negroes." FINE HARDCOVER. Hard Cover. Fine/No Dust Jacket Present. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. New York: Hardcover

Editorials and letters reflect deepening concern over state retaliation and civil liberties.

3 The Body Politic No. 26 September 1976. One of the most controversial publications in the history of queer media. This issue includes Gerald Hannon’s “Men Loving Boys Loving Men†which discusses intergenerational gay relationships and calls for the abolition of age of consent laws. The cover headline “Anthony is 15. So is Gary†sparked widespread outrage. The article ultimately led to criminal charges against the paper’s editors in 1978 which were later dismissed after a high-profile trial. The issue also documents gay organizing efforts in Toronto parks and public demonstrations such as “kiss-ins.â€

4 The Body Politic No. 28 November 1976. Features “Suicide or Murderâ€â€”a major exposé on the suspicious death of gay artist Philip Slone who died following a brutal gang assault in Hamilton. The article reveals a pattern of escalating street violence against queer men and police inaction. Additional reports cover the lack of national coordination among gay groups tensions within the women’s movement and the institutional failure of the legal system to protect LGBTQ citizens. Editorials advocate for stronger national organizing.

5 The Body Politic No. 29 Dec–Jan 1977. The Fifth Anniversary Issue. Includes new fiction by Jane Rule and critical essays on queer identity under socialism with comparisons of LGBTQ life in East Germany and Canada. Features a historical article on an 1838 sodomy scandal in Upper Canada and retrospectives on the evolving gay liberation movement. News coverage highlights nationwide labor activism by queer workers feminist coalition-building and the growing tension between assimilationist and radical factions in the movement.

Issues exhibit toning and light wear consistent with age with some chipping and separation at folds. Overall good to very good condition. An archive showcasing The Body Politic at its most radical and politically potent—documenting the collision of queer life state surveillance and the internal struggles of a movement that refused to conform. A vital resource for scholars of LGBTQ history Canadian media and liberation-era print culture. unknown
