A pamphlet supporting strategies for the expansion of women's employment opportunities. It outlines current obstacles to women's work such as hostility from male employees: "Women however cannot be employed in England in this manner because of the jealousy of their fellow workmen. If a master were to employ women in any part of the business the whole of his workmen would strike at once." The document also lists sad consequences of the current work climate: "Workhouses were found to be overcrowded with able-bodies females while charities were besieged with women praying to be provided either with employment or bread." Journal articles cover a range of subjects including injection techniques reviews of various nursing programs and hospital administrative concerns of security. In the early 1900s the autonomous nursing-controlled Nightingale-era schools came to an end. Nursing Schools became controlled by hospitals and formal "book learning" was discouraged in favor of clinical experience. Hospitals used student nurses as cheap labor but expended the nurses activities. Advertisements for medical uniforms and equipment as well as fashion and homegoods featured at front and back of text. Page 333 is cut down the middle with half the page missing. Some tearing on stapled spine and light sunning on cover does not obscure the bold title text. Overall good condition. unknown

Woman's Tribune Covers Woman Suffrage- 1887
1887. Woman's Tribune Newspaper Beatrice Nebraska: October 1887. The Woman's Tribune with its motto in the masthead: "Equality Before The Law" was launched by Clara Bewick Colby from her home in Beatrice Nebraska in August 1883. For the next year it was the official publication of the Nebraska Woman Suffrage Association from 1883 to 1909 with many copies now at the library of congress. Articles include "A Centennial Protest" redressing the United States Government for its "unjust interpretation of hte constitution presented on behalf of the Women of the United States by officers of the national woman suffrage association." A poem titled "Need We Despair" inspires readers to take hope that the balance of power will be righted. One public opinion written by a reader begins "The idiots who are clamoring for prohibition and yet do not recognize woman's relation to the question are those who are the political hypocrites of the day." Colby believed that connecting suffrage to current events was an important way to unify women around the cause across the country and globe. The Tribune was probably the first woman's paper published by a woman and was beloved by Suffrage movement leaders. Folded measures 12" x 18" inches. The paper covers news of women's suffrage both local and national and includes article poetry and opinion pieces. One inch tear at bottom and very small tear at top. Both reviews open with an advertisement for the printer that reads "Office for the employment of women as compositors. Girls trained and employed for the last twenty years. Ladies and gentleman are invited to place their orders for printing where they will be executed by women in a style equal to the best. No slipshod work! No exorbitant prices!" The rest of both reviews is composed of articles news and reviews related to women's suffrage. Some titles include "Experiences Amongst Chinese Women" "The Political Position of Women in Canada." Together the two speak to the level of organization as well as the international focus of the movement as women collaborated across countries and continents reporting on successes and obstacles bolstering support for the cause by keeping readers well informed. San Francisco Good Times Countercultural Underground Newspaper Covering George Jackson's Death 1971
1971. Good Times San Francisco: April 9 1971. Volume IV No. 27. Bold cover image shows group of women partially colored by a red star. Larger image above them of woman in pith helmet one hand on hip and the other extending a long barrel pistol with outstretched arm. Stories inside are advertised on front as "George Jackson Murder Alternative Schools Mexican Mushrooms Revolutionary Yoga." 16" x 11" inches. 26 pages. Back page a full spread photograph of George Jackson in red the text below reading "George Jackson Sept 23 1941 - Aug 21 1971." The Good Times Newspaper Collective was the primary underground newspaper of San Francisco throughout the late sixties and early seventies a hub for the anti-war movement the trials of political prisoners like Angela Davis political corruption in the city and shared community information. Its volunteer staff put out the paper until its last issue in 1972. Of the publication one volunteer wrote "We had to fight for the right to sell our papers in the streets.We covered stories from the perspective of the participants dodging clubs as we took notes. The lines were clear and we knew which side we were on." This issue covers the shooting death of George Jackson by prison guards at San Quentin where Jackson was being held. "He died revoluting against a society which had sentenced him to a life in prison for a $70 robbery committed when he was 19 years old. Seven of the 10 years were spent in solitary confinement." The issue also includes information for a women's anti-war march an editorial giving advice about taking legal action against landlords and a piece about the health department's crackdown on non-certified raw milk. A comic called "Fox" follows its protagonist the black activist "Dominique Fox" being framed for a bombing in this issue. Both news source and voice for radical activists this issue of Good Times provides an incisive look at the wide ranging interests opinions concerns and stories circulating within the counterculture movement embodied by San Francisco in the 1960s and 70s. Handwritten 1818 Commonplace Book Offers a Detailed View into Everyday life two hundred years Ago "Of all the tyrannies on humankind the worst is that which persecutes the mind.
1818. Americana Handwritten 1818 commonplace book. 38 handwritten pages 6" x 4." England. While the writer of this book remains unnamed flipping through the pages offers an intimate look into their thoughts ideas and reading habits. Writings in this book range from the political "The paper money system is a system of murder as well as robbery" to the thoughtful "An artichoke and a pineapple have the same shape but what a difference in flavor!" to the biting "Women have such a tedious manner of telling a story." The latter half of the book is entitled "Memorandum" and appears to be mostly concerned with matters of business. There quotes and verses of poems that the writer found inspiring such as an excerpt from Voltaire: "The art of instructing succeeds better than the art of lampooning because satire dies with those who are its victims but.virtue is immortal." Other excerpts include "The universe appeared as a vault wherein true comfort was entombed; and the sun himself as a lamp to show the gloomy horror of a guilty mind." "One of the Roman emperors sent to buy the pillow of a man that was greatly in debt yet could sleep sweetly." "Of all the tyrannies on humankind the worst is that which persecutes the mind." "Many prose writers dislike wit as eunuchs dislike love." "On Monday evening Mr. Brougham is reported to have made a motion for the diminution of the influence of the crown in a speech which the Times calls the greater parliamentary effort this __. If instead of the greatest the Times had called it the longest that judicious paper would have been for once right.we have heard that the hon. member spoke for three hours & a half." Verso is the text by John Jay.Ambassador John Lothrop Motley April 15 1814 – May 29 1877 was an American author and diplomat. As a popular historian he is best known for his works on the Netherlands the three volume work The Rise of the Dutch Republic and four volume History of the United Netherlands. As United States Minister to Austria in the service of the Abraham Lincoln administration Motley helped to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates in the American Civil War. He later served as Minister to the United Kingdom Court of St. James during the Ulysses S. Grant administration.In December 1870 Mr. Motley sent a 62-page dispatch to Secretary Fish titled “End of a Mission†in which he protested his recall and recounted the events leading to the dispatch of November 10. The Secretary followed with an even longer rejoinder sent not to Motley who was no longer in an official position and hadn’t been when he had sent the dispatch but to the chargé d’affaires Benjamin Moran. Senator Sumner upbraided Mr. Grant and Mr. Fish on the Senate floor then had the Senate publish all the documents related to the recall. In 1878 Oliver Wendell Holmes a fellow Brahmin wrote a memorial biography which was devoted to a defense of the former minister and a repudiation of his recall. John Jay who had succeeded Mr. Motley in Vienna published his own defense of him in 1877. Mr. Grant after leaving the presidency wrote a letter to the New York Herald reiterating that his reason for dismissing Mr. Motley was solely that he had failed to carry out his duties. Mr. Grant restated this charge a few years later in a Cairo interview while he was on a world tour concluding that he had no ill will toward Mr. Motley who “…like other estimable men made mistakes and Motley made a mistake which made him an improper person to hold office under me.â€Provenance: Lt.-Col. Herbert Alexander St. John-Mildmay was born on 20 July 1836.1 He was the son of Captain George William St. John-Mildmay and Mary Baillie. He married Susan Margaret Stackpole Motley daughter of the American writere and diplomat the Hon. John Lothrop Motley 1814 -1877 on 7 May 1884.1 He died on 21 October 1922 at age 86.
